Ad Update

After a consultation with a very nice person at Google, I have changed the locations and sizing of the ads on this site. Mobile users may see changes as well. I am hoping that this will improve my earnings while not interfering with your enjoyment of the site.

The Google rep encouraged me to insert ads within the articles, as many other sites do, but I resisted this as I find it annoying. I plan to leave this in place for a few weeks to see if it helps, and I welcome your comments and suggestions.

I don’t mind ads on the side, but those sites with the ads that block half the image, in an attempt to make you notice them so you can click the X without accidentally clicking the ad, are annoying. I tend to not consider buying anything from companies who have annoying ads. Flashing ads give me a headache, so those kind tend to annoy me too.

Are you describing ads that appear right on top of images in an article? I dislike that too, as well as pop-up ads that obscure parts of the page.

Have the type of ads changed? I feel like I used to see ads from places where I have done online business previously (e.g., TJ Maxx, Priceline).

Now I am seeing ads for cosmetic procedures to remove eye bags and the 4 foods you should never eat.

Anyway we could go back to the old ads?

Julie, I only changed the ad positions. The only control I have over content is that I can block ads or ad categories. I will try to block the category with the ads you described.

Don’t feel bad. Safeway grocery store’s Just 4 U program will offer items on discount, or occasionally free, based on your purchasing history. I bought a bunch of snack size bags of Oreos one day, and the next time I logged onto the site there was an offer for a free box of Weight Watchers cereal. 😛

Oh dear! Must have been a glitch – they meant to offer Nutter Butters 😀

I quite like how the site is looking these days. I have tasteful banner ads across the top and down the side for retailers that I frequent like Amazon and LL. Bean. It’s all good as far as I’m concerned! I don’t feel that your posts are obscured at all: I dislike sites with ads that obscure the content. Also dislike those sites that promise you “12 cute photos” but you can’t find the arrow that moves you forward to the next pic in line because there’s ads everywhere…..

I agree, it looks great to me too (using Safari on a Mac desktop). Nothing blinking, dancing or deceptive/offensive 😀 And NTMTOM, I totally agree about avoiding ads within articles if possible.
