As we tour Smiley Dog’s spacious Manhattan penthouse, there can be found here and there the telltale signs of sudden YouTube wealth: the vintage collectable pinball machines, the walk-in closet full of diamond-studded dog collars, the bouncy castle inflated with purified air imported from the Swiss Alps. It is a fittingly frivolous set of diversions for the star of such viral hits as “Smiley Dog Smiles at Ball,” “Smiley Dog Smiles at Chair,” and “Smiley Dog Just Smiles for Ten Minutes OMG So Cute LOL.”
But it is in his art collection, conservatively estimated at $8.6 million, where the free-spending dilettante vanishes and a serious, savvy collector emerges. Aided by top curator Francesca Hoodleburg of the Snotman Galleries, Smiley Dog has amassed a cross-section of top artists, including the self-portrait commissioned from who he will only reveal as a “leading master.” “I’m contractually forbidden from saying the name,” he boasts slyly, “but I can say he showed at MOMA in the last five years.”
