    Breaking News
It looks like the US helicopter parenting epidemic spread to the animals there. Is there something in the american water? (And no, we’re not talking about Flint.)

All this overprotectiveness! In my day we played on the jungle gym over bare dirt! None of this rubberized surface nonsense! Mom glanced out the window once in a while to make sure we weren’t dead and that was it.

Actual dad quote, on climbing the maple tree in the front yard: “If you fall and break your leg, don’t come running to me!”

Which might be hard with a broken leg! 🙂 I think all parents must have used those familiar slogans of way back when. I remember monkey bars over concrete. Gotta lotta scraped knees for sure.

My cousin actually did break his arm falling off the 12-foot-tall, 12-inch wide metal slide over concrete in their school playground. They didn’t change the slide afterwards, though, they just chalked it up to “oh well, one of this year’s bone breaks from the slide!”

And even *I* thought that slide was dangerous, and it’s not like I wasn’t doing things like climbing 20 feet up in trees by age 2 and scaring my mother half to death when she looked out a second story window and saw me!

Poor little guy, can’t even climb a tree by himslef LOL!

But seriously, I do feel sorry for the children growing up now, the world was different place back when I was a kid. I remember during summer vacation, leaving the house in the morning before my parents got up for work, packing a lunch and playing outside all day, fishing and climbing trees and roaming thru the countryside with my cousin and coming home only for diner at night and nobody was worried.

      I know!

I climbed trees, rode my bicycle everywhere, played cops and robbers (or WWII – we were either GIs or Nazis) with my cousins (mostly boys) and dolls with my neighbors, inspected bugs and explored the creek at the end of our street… I played with scissors and glue and glitter, ate fruit from the trees (occasional worms be damned), broke quite a few eyeglasses and scratched my knees and elbows with alarming frequency. Yet here I am, almost 60, a (reasonably) well-adjusted, healthy woman.

      Makes you wonder, doesn’t it…

Circa 1970s. We roamed/biked all over our neighborhood–mom called us with a cow bell, then later a small gong! All the moms had a different “come home NOW” call. Nobody worried. We walked a mile to school and back home again, in all weathers–no big deal. When we vacationed at my grandma’s house in the Georgia mountains, we were surrounded by serious woods, creeks, waterfalls and poisonous SNAKES, yet still had freedom as long as we told where we were going. We had a blast. It was a different world. *sigh*
Parents now would have their kids on a tether…

Bucky Covington sings “A Different World.” Very on point.

Apparently Bei Bai is a bit of a mama’s boy. His squeakings are adorable. Mei Xiang is an experienced mommy. I’m sure this protectively is due to his first climb? After this, he will climb to the tree tops and she won’t notice or worry.

Mei Xiang: “you could poke your eye out with that!”

Any Mom: “put on a sweater, I’m cold.”

    • Mr. Max February 11, 2016 / 6:35 am

That reminds me of a definition of “sweater”: something you put on when your mom is cold.

My favorite definition of a “little boy” is : a noise with dirt on it.

Hey, Mike, I’m not getting any sound on any of the videos on your blog. When I play the same video on YouTube the sound is fine. Any ideas?

    • Not That Mike The Other Mike February 13, 2016 / 9:58 am

I’m not sure. I get sound when I play YouTube videos on my devices. When playing a YT video on my site, are you able to adjust the video sound by using the volume icon in the playback window?

Sorry it took so long to respond, I lost track of where I posted the comment. For some reason it’s working now. Not sure what happened.
