Hop Wheels Racer!

The cold winter took its toll on the newborn bunnies at Overlook Acres farm, but one scrappy survivor was only halfway gone. Although the cold left him paralyzed from the belly down, he was still full of energy. So the farmers rigged a toy skateboard into a bunny wheelchair, and now the little fella just rolls along.

Keep them bunnies, rollin’, Amy S.! (View on Facebook)

? This makes me cry and smile at the same time. Cry for the poor bebeh bunnies that froze to death but rejoice that one did survive. And his survival dependent upon very caring people. Love that they made it so the bunneh (I’ll call him “Scooter”) could get around — so very leetle and cute.

I went to their facebook page to see how the little bun was doing now, and they say he is getting leg massages and can move his legs a little more each day. They aren’t sure he will always be like this. They are also writing a book about Wheels.?

    A Man of NTMTOM!

And who the heck voted this video down?!

    • Deb February 21, 2016 / 1:50 pm

I didn’t vote it down, but maybe someone had an issue with the farm being one for rabbit meat. I saw a big controversy on their FB page. Sorry to be the witch at the christening 🙁

It wasn’t me. It could be someone who went to the Facebook page and found out they raise those bunnies for food

I’m the submitterator, and I was worried about those Fb comments. I understand and sympathize with those who keep bunnies as pets—of course the farm’s purpose is distressing! But this little bunster is just full of squee. I’m glad we can see him here.

I am glad you submitted this cutie!

I was wondering if this is a farm that raised bunnehs (I thought as pets), then how come some froze to death? Wouldn’t they’ve prepared the hutches, cages, or bedding to withstand the cold. Now that I’ve read about raising them for food, I’m not as impressed. However, maybe raising and taking care of this leetle fella, they might see how wonderful and fun they can be as a pet and not only as food. One can hope.

Maybe they will at least make a warming station in the barn.

Being concerned is why I checked the fb page. Yes, they are a family farm that raises meat rabbits, as well as goats for milk and chickens for eggs, but they do so in a humane way. The farmer explains that the bunnies are free range, digging burrows, living communally inside the barn with warming lamps and kit nest boxes, but that sometimes the moms will push kits out, and with it so cold it doesn’t take long for one to freeze. “Wheels” was found cold and unable to move his back legs. Upon examination it was discovered he had bites on his hind quarters and that could be the reason for the leg trama. Anyone who has raised animals knows sometimes mothers aren’t “good” mothers. And although I wouldn’t eat rabbit meat, as long as the rabbits are being treated humanely I can deal with it.

Check out the fb page. There is a lot of vitriol aimed at this farmer in the comments, but skip over that and read his posts with explanations. You may find it reassuring.

Thank you for taking the time to check this out and post it – that’s good to know.

Thank you 6Rabbits. You are a very Admirable Ambassador for the bunnies.

🙁 I wish I had just looked at the video and not read the comments 🙁

Who could eat a cute little bunny? And the fact that they froze . . . 🙁

I wish they would send him to me. He wouldn’t need wheels. I’d carry him everywhere he wanted to go for the rest of his life!!

Elle’s Maid, – I second that idea of carrying him around, I’d gladly do that. My daughter just got a sling like thing and carries one of her bunnehs around in it. He likes it, not your typical bunneh behavior.

They’re coming out with a book about this little guy? I would buy it.

And raising them as food? Didn’t realize that there was that big of a market for rabbits, outside the snake market that is.

Rabbit meat is a low-fat, tasty meat–according to what I’ve read. There is a growing demand for it in the U.S. Although some people own “meat rabbits” as pets–supposedly they are very docile–the size of most pet rabbits wouldn’t qualify them. Rabbits that are raised for consumption are on a very different diet than pet rabbits, also. As a slave to buns for 27 yrs, you end up knowing a lot of this info as a matter of course. When I got my first bun in ’89 “house rabbits” were a rarity!
