The Kit-Kidnapping Cat Caper

The mystery of the missing socks has been solved. While many theorized that they vanished into a parallel dimension, they’ve actually been stolen by a New Zealand cat named Brigit with a taste for socks and underwear. Specifically, a taste for men’s underwear. Extra specifically, a taste for underwear of men with no taste in underwear. To put it briefly, Brigit roams the neighborhood indulging her peculiar fetish, and her embarrassed owner Sarah has to leave notes in mailboxes trying to reunite the items with their owners.

Way I see it, I’m protecting men from their own poor judgement.

This was on the “No Sweat News” on my local radio station this morning. So much better with a picture!

How does she steal the underwear? And what does she do with it? These are the questions I would ask this cat if I think she would answer me.

I think that might be one of her victims, currently in no state to set any more than a foot in camera range.

          Lol! Perfect observation.

“To put it briefly” – snort.

I would guess that the first three rows of underwear were owned by the same person, given the similar size and colors. With 10 days of shorts missing, he’d have had to do laundry much more often, unless he just went out and bought more. It boggles the mind.

Maybe he just recycles a lot, like his dad (modest spoiler if you haven’t seen Big Hero 6):

Well, that’s one way to meet cute guys! And Sarah already knows the answer to “boxers or briefs?” 😀

    • Starfish March 21, 2016 / 2:33 pm

I was about to say the same thing! Maybe Brigit is trying her paw at playing matchmaker. That would make for one heck of a “Meet Cute” story.

There was a cat in England, I think, that stole toys and bras – they set up a night vision camera and caught it in the act. Maybe a particular gene is involved – The Magpie gene?

Yes, and it was an incredible video. I was in tears of laughter.

    Brigit is AWESOME!!

I’m impressed by the number of complete pairs of socks. Kitteh is good at keeping them together when she is bringing them home. Makes me think that she might not be going to terribly far.

That’s a different cat, but it’s amazing how similar their coloring is! Is this a Siamese trait?

Socks✓, briefs✓, but where are the cat’s pajamas?

    • allein March 21, 2016 / 3:20 pm

I guess kitty sleeps in her skivvies. Or other people’s skivvies…

That they got Brigit to pose with her trophies like this is really funny…. Kitty is probably very proud of her hunting prowess.

  12. Faye March 21, 2016 / 5:10 pm

This is way better than her bringing home dead mice.

  13. amyliz March 21, 2016 / 5:15 pm

Maybe kitty is trying to play matchmaker between her mom and one of her theft victims! Whatever her motive, I love this story and picture!

    • amyliz March 21, 2016 / 7:47 pm

Oops, I just know realized others had a similar idea! Sorry!

I had a cat who used to steel stuff around the house and hide it under the bed, socks, belts, bras anything lying about was his.

Once my husband was building a bookcase and the cat stole a screwdriver right in front of us, so I said “Fatso what are you doing?” And the cat drops the screwdriver and lays down on it and looks at me like “What screwdriver? I don’t know what you’re talking about”

I lived with a cat after college (’twas my roommate’s cat, not like the cat was my roommate) and one time we moved the sofa to vacuum and found jewelry, cash, and a CREDIT CARD. We decided he was building a stash to move out and get his own place.

Just when you thought it was safe to hang laundry outside…

  16. Dana March 21, 2016 / 9:17 pm

Wait….how does Brigit’s owner know whose underwear is whose? Is it a New Zealand thing to write your name in your scivvies? Did I miss something?

    • Not That Mike The Other Mike March 21, 2016 / 9:53 pm

I think this is why Brigit’s owner says she has to leave messages in mailboxes around the neighborhood. She may not know whose stuff Brigit is stealing, so she alerts everyone and hopes the owner(s) show up to claim.

      • Dana March 21, 2016 / 10:49 pm

Oh! I assumed her messages were personalized. “Hi Ted. Brigit found your Spider-Man underoos. Text me when you get home and I’ll run them over. Sorry!”

        • Not That Mike The Other Mike March 21, 2016 / 11:53 pm

Thus bringing us back to the question: How would Brigit’s human know whose Underoos are whose? :O

Reminds me of the first time my husband went on a business trip after we got a yellow lab. My dog went around the house and collected a bunch of my husband’s things– a pair of sneakers, some socks, a messenger bag. She piled them all in her favorite spot in the house like she was making some kind of memorial. I bet she was really surprised to see him back!

    • Kar March 22, 2016 / 9:12 pm

      That is kind of poignant.

When I went moved out my father suggested that I leave some unwashed night shirts for my cat (they were bringing her up in a few months). Mom kind of missed the message and washed/sent to me. Don’t think the cat cared either way…

  18. Faye March 22, 2016 / 12:51 pm

Are you sure she missed him? Maybe she was calling dibs on the best stuff.
