I Got No Strings On Me

Shout-out to April for using the tip jar, thank you! Also, my thanks to all the subscribers for their ongoing support.

Andrew Y. shared an amazing video of an amazing rescue: When a porcupine fish became entangled in a discarded net, volunteers from a conservation group set it free, using broken glass to improvise a cutting tool. While its mate looked on, the fish waited patiently as the threads were cut one by one.

Thank you, I needed that after this past week.

This is so heartwarming! Clearly that fish’s mate was very concerned, but stayed right there. You could tell the rescuer was trying very hard to avoid cutting either of them or scaring the loose one. Restores my faith in people!

Did the touchy kitty set this up? Watch out for paws…

Somehow So Long and Thanks for [my] Fish doesn’t feel right.

Kar. I like that. So long. Thanks for freeing MY fish.

So Long and Thanks FROM the fish seems more appropriate.

I was amazed how close the “friend” fish stayed to the one caught in the net and the human. I wonder if maybe they were a mated pair. Do porcupine fish mate for life like sone other species and this was the “husband” or the ‘wife” ?

Wonderful! The loyalty of his little pal/mate is amazing.

    Additional info about the rescue:

Commonly called blowfish, porcupinefish are not actually true “pufferfish.” Unlike their body-inflating kin, whose spikes are thin and small, these larger fish boast an arsenal of prominent, tough spines. This effective defence system means porcupinefish have few predators, but as you can imagine, all of those appendages make the likelihood of getting tangled much greater.

Core Sea, who carry out marine research and conservation projects in southeast Asia, assured concerned Facebook fans that they will go back out to retrieve the net.

It’s likely that what we’re seeing is a male and female pair, but contrary to some reports, this doesn’t mean the fish are bonded for life. Porcupinefish are usually solitary and are only seen in pairs or small groups when mating. Whether or not this duo stuck together after the ordeal remains a mystery!

Yay for follow up info! Thanks!

Thanks, Faye. Glad to hear about the net being retrieved – I wondered about that when I first saw this video. There’s so much crap in the ocean – and in the environment generally – it’s pathetic. People are thoughtless and worse. We have much to answer for.

What i find amazing about this is his partner never once puffed up, she knew to keep calm, she knew they were being helped, she kept him as calm as possible, wonderful video.

Love the little wave at the end. Bye, bye fishy. Very soothing video. 🙂

Mike, thank you!! This was just wonderful. It’s always amazing to see how so many animals show concern about each other – especially in view of the behavior of so many of the human kind. Kudos to the rescuer; at a moment when I was feeling more pessimistic than usual, this was a much needed reminder that yes, there are good people around. There’s still hope for us.

So, so sweet……what is this wetness coming from my eyes?
