Kids These Days, Always Whining

If you thought the horn was the most piercing part of a rhinoceros, you’ve never heard them complaining when they don’t get as much meelks as they want. These three noisemakers live at the Care for Wild Africa Rhino Sanctuary in South Africa, which rehabilitates rhino calves who lose their parents to poaching. According to a volunteer quoted in Raw Story, they get fed every three hours — but that doesn’t stop them from crying for more.

I’ve never given much (OK, any) thought to what a baby rhino might sound like, but if I had, I certainly wouldn’t have imagined THIS!

I would expect that noise to come form a baby dolphin not form a baby rhino!

Huh!!!! Never knew that they cried like that! I can imagine bebeh humpback whales making that sounds unda da sea, but not rhinosaubebehs!

Oh my goodness. Sound like that must be the Rhrino word for meelks! In triplicate.

    Hey Nom Tom-

I LOVE the new feature – “You May Also Enjoy”. Because I do, I do also enjoy!!! Love to be reminded of your past brilliance!

Me too! Just reread the mystery of the “Tissue Issue.” Good grief — these titles are just fantastic.

Seriously, how do the humans not go running in with more bottles of meelks? Because that noise is just heartbreaking! I adore rhinos anyway — I especially love their feet, they’re so sturdy and beautifully formed to support their weight — but I don’t think I could STAND to be around that crying without succumbing instantly!

Agree! I would be soooooooo guilty of slipping them an extra bottle or three.

That is the cutest whiniest whine I’ve ever heard. Redonk!

  9. Haha May 17, 2016 / 11:24 pm

Nope, just the doors to the visitor center. They need some oil. People coming in. People going out. Doors squealing.
Nope, no heartstring pulling sounds from hungry babies. Just oil needing doors.

You KNOW if they were in the ocean, that sound would call a mama whale from across the deep to say, “Here sweetling, eat, eat.”

  11. Kar May 18, 2016 / 12:34 am

I swear that whine peeled the paint off my walls.

Did anyone else notice they look like Shrek?

    • Smartypants May 18, 2016 / 11:17 am

Yes – I remember hearing that Shrek’s creators based his ears on Rhino ears, so you’re spot-on.

First, they do look like they are getting plenty to eat, so I won’t worry about that.

Second, from the way those fence uprights were moving around when they barely nudged them, I bet they could go right through that fence if they tried, so for the sake of their safety and their keepers not having to hunt all over the countryside to fetch them back, I hope they never try. It’s easier when they don’t know their own strength.

They are orphans and they want more milk.

    Any named Oliver?

    (Yes, my heart hurts.)

My kittens both ran for cover when the rhinos started crying.
