She may be a beautiful, soft and furry Queen Bunneh, but I can see the darts coming from her eyes and the sheer disapproval. All this towards the one who encased her ears in the paper crown. She says she is worthy of a real tiara, thank you very much.

“What is this thing on my head?!”

    This folderol is beneath me!
Well actually it’s above my head.

I think I see steam escaping from her ears.
    Very lush gorgeous bunn.

Gorgeous bunny! But she disapproves because rabbits don’t want carrot cake, they want BANANA ? BREAD! Seriously people, most rabbits care little for carrots. Banana, pumpkin, craisins, blueberries and many other treats are desired way more than carrots!
    ????????

I Blame Bugs Bunny for this misconception.

I’m sure Bugs helped, but even Beatrix Potter had her buns looking for carrots. Maybe cos it’s the easiest crop to get to? Hmmm…

Ooh, those things have a lot of sugar which can lead to stasis. I had a bun die of stasis and religiously avoid all sweets except carrots. I used to give Apple, too, but had problems but now have none at all (sounds like an ad – Now we’re Stasis Free!) And my buns LOVE their carrots. I realize it’s different for every bun, I’m overly concerned given my experience.

If you’ve had a bun die from stasis its understandable that you’re careful, but be aware carrots are high in sugar, too. I limit my buns to one fruit treat per day–pear, apple, bberries, rberries, sberries or banana in a small chunk. They have 1/8 c. Timothy pellets, unlimited Timothy hay and a variety of greens daily. Plenty of high quality Timothy hay will usually prevent stasis.

How long have you had bunnies or how many do you have? I got my first bunny in 1989, back when the whole ” house rabbit” trend had just started. I’ve had 12 buns since then, most living between 9 and 13 years!

Yes, I realize carrots are sugar rich, but they get very little and the rest of their diet is much like yours – we get Oxbow hay and Timothy pellets, lots of veggies, lots of variety. I’ve had 9 buns over the years, not so long-lived as yours except one 11 year old – mine tend to live the average 8 or so, but I’ve lost a couple way too early, not all thru stasis. I work with a local rabbit rescue and learned a lot thru them. I have two now, ages 3 and 4 approx. great pair.???

My bunns get very few fruit treats but they will KILL you for a baby carrot. Actually they would KILL you for any food…They always act as if they are on the brink of starvation :D!

      • Murray May 23, 2016 / 1:00 pm

Yes, I know the drill. Mine turn into pinball projectiles, racing around and trampling each other until I finally place them in each of the appropriate receptacles. ?

        • LunaChickFringe May 23, 2016 / 1:25 pm

I know! We tell them they must have a death wish because they run around and get underfoot. We are certain that one day one of them will get accidentally squished.

        • Murray May 23, 2016 / 1:50 pm

Oh, and by the by, I mean the carrots go into the receptacles.?

          • allein May 23, 2016 / 1:53 pm

I was assuming the receptacle was the bunny mouf.

LOL! My girls understand that they have to go “home” in order to get their treats or greens. It reduces the chaos and one of them is what my vet euphemistically calls a “sloppy eater”. She drools everywhere when she has a treat or a “salad”.

She is glorious, and I am already feeling my own shame taking over me.

The double ruff of disapproval under the magnificent chin has me cowering in a corner.
