It’s nice that Adi asks. One of my monsters insisted on cuddles by biting me this morning! (Little love bites.)

    She’s a gorgeous girl.

    • Murray May 28, 2016 / 1:35 pm

Do I detect – just a trace, mind you – of, shall we say, manipulation in that pleading look?😜

      Who’s a gorgeous pusswam?

      • allein May 28, 2016 / 2:40 pm

Manipulation? From a cat?? No. I don’t believe it.

      • Duckie May 30, 2016 / 12:36 pm

Manipulation my aunt. I’m not looking at kitty’s facial expression; I’m observing kitty’s footal expression. Looks like a claw to me…

        • allein May 30, 2016 / 1:04 pm

          lol…”footal expression”

Just to let everyone know from last weekend’s open thread, my missing cat came back!

    • Ilonka May 28, 2016 / 10:51 am

Yay!! Thanks for letting us know. So relieved for you & kitty😊 Hope kitty is well after the journey outside…

    • Duckie May 28, 2016 / 11:04 am

      Oh, thank goodness.
And let me guess: kitty blamed you for everything.

      • Scoobie May 28, 2016 / 1:05 pm

I thought I heard her in my sleep but wasn’t sure if it was a dream , so I got up and went out calling for her, came back and she was sitting in the stairs looking puzzled why I was outside calling for her.

        • debg May 28, 2016 / 1:26 pm

Congrats, Scoobie. It’s so awful to lose them even for a little while.

    • amyliz May 28, 2016 / 11:27 am

Oh I am so glad, scoobiesnacks! My old kitty slipped out the door last Saturday and was gone for 2 of the longest hours of my life before she reappeared!

Adi is a beauty; I love black kitties!

      • Phred's Mom May 28, 2016 / 2:25 pm

Adi looks just like my Ben Him.
        Black kitties are the best.
        Shelters say they don’t find
forever homes as fast as other
        kitties, though. Are people
        still that superstitious?
        Silly people.

        • allein May 28, 2016 / 2:37 pm

There’s a woman I used to work with (who raises seeing-eye dogs!) and her daughter is a photographer who volunteers with her local shelter, taking pictures of the animals for their website. She believes that black cats don’t get adopted as much in part because it’s hard to get a good picture of them. So she specializes in pictures of the dark ones. Today did an story about her last year: http://www.today.com/pets/l-photographer-puts-spotlight-black-cats-shelters-get-them-homes-t51316

          • Phred's Mom May 28, 2016 / 3:06 pm

            Super shot!

          • Jerzowa May 28, 2016 / 3:35 pm

This photographer is my hero. I have two gorgeous black cats, I love the like crazy, they are positively the most beautiful beasts in the universe. They have tons of pictures, not a single one doing them justice.

        • Faye May 28, 2016 / 3:16 pm

Next cat, if I’m still alive, will be a senior black one. Or two.

        • Murray C. May 28, 2016 / 3:25 pm

It’s the same with black dogs and rabbits – I think it is true, about their pictures not sowing up well. Allen’s sample (below) will do a lot to help get adorable black critters adopted.

By the way, in England black cats are good luck – go figure.

    • Smartypants May 28, 2016 / 2:52 pm

Scoobie, that’s awesome! So glad to hear it.

    • Laura May 28, 2016 / 4:47 pm

I’m so glad, Scoobie! It’s so frightening when our furbabies go missing! My beloved tortie Emily, at age 17 (she lived to nearly 20), snuck out and stayed missing for nearly 3 weeks. Fortunately, a neighbor saw her in his yard, so I knew she was staying close to home. So I put out a can of her favorite gushy food every night, hoping she’d come back to our yard; she just ate the food. Cats! But since the neighbors had 20 feet of truly impenetrable woods at the back of their yard, plus a low deck that she could hide under quite inaccessibly, it wasn’t until he saw her out in the yard one day and fetched me that I was finally able to persuade her to let me pick her up and bring her back home.

The good news was that she never even THOUGHT about sneaking out again. She was content to stay inside and sleep on my lap and complain about the poor service.

I do miss that silly creature!

      • Scoobie May 28, 2016 / 6:51 pm

I’m so pleased you got her back !

      • Faye June 1, 2016 / 8:45 am

Emily was a beauty! My silly creature, Dorothy, has taken up the habit of bolting out the door. If I’m wearing my nightgown without a bra she’s on her own. So far she comes back and waits by the door to get in. I am convinced she thinks we are playing a game. But I worry she will run into the street or one yard too far and get lost. Scares the bejeezes out of me because I love her so much.

    • Ms Can Opener May 29, 2016 / 12:33 am

So glad for you. I cried for three weeks when mine was lost, then cried when I got him back. There’s no figuring out us humans. MCO

  3. Mariana May 28, 2016 / 10:54 am

Well I just did my taxes. I feel like a mature and respectable adult.
As a treat I’ll have breakfast food for lunch and probably dinner as well.
    Adi is lovely

    • allein May 28, 2016 / 12:11 pm

Heh…I did my taxes in March. My federal refund came promptly within a week or two. My state refund has yet to show up. I checked their tracking site and it said I should have received it by now. So I did a trace and as long as it hasn’t been cashed they’ll send me a new one. In 4-6 weeks. My April condo association fee payment went missing, too, after the mail carrier took three days to even take it out of my box. Starting to really distrust the mail delivery in this place. Mailed my June payment plus the missing payment yesterday…from the US Mail box outside the grocery store.

Grumblegrumble. Can I snuggle with Adi? Please?

      • Mariana May 28, 2016 / 12:30 pm

Can you not make these payments online? Seems a bit of a hassle.

        • allein May 28, 2016 / 1:32 pm

I’m looking into my bank’s bill payment feature. I do most of my stuff online through each individual company website (condo and my water bill are the only regular checks I write anymore), but I think I might switch to using billpay through the bank. If the company doesn’t have an online option they send a check. The condo people have an online option through some third party company that does that sort of thing for apartment and condo complexes. Ideally I’d have it just automatically go on my credit card but I think they charge a fee for that. I do that for a couple other bills because it doesn’t cost me anything, I don’t have to worry about paying on time, and if anything looks wrong I can dispute it before I pay the credit card bill (and it adds to my cashback bonus πŸ˜‰ ).

You can get tax refunds direct deposited but my tax guy (a.k.a. “dad”) doesn’t like to do that. (He uses his bank’s bill pay service so he doesn’t have each separate company linked to his checking account.)

      • Phred's Mom May 28, 2016 / 2:31 pm

Got my state refund right away, but the
Feds dinged me for not checking a box,
had to re-submit that blessed page with
the box checked. What a waste of time,
paper, and money. Still don’t know if
        this met their approval. Grrrrrrrrr!

        • allein May 28, 2016 / 2:39 pm

So now I wonder what happens to the first check. I guess they must cancel it so it can’t be cashed? Would I get a visit from the state police if I ended up receiving two and tried to cash them both?

          • Phred's Mom May 28, 2016 / 3:08 pm

            Are the staties cuties?

            • allein May 28, 2016 / 3:58 pm

              lol…maybe I should find out πŸ˜‰

I used to work in a bookstore and one of my coworkers there has a brother who is a local cop. He would sometimes come in for coffee. One of my managers had a crush on him. We called him Officer Andy.

              • Faye May 30, 2016 / 11:49 am

That moment when you know either way!

For me it was seeing a lady Fireman in full gear carrying a grappling hook because there was smoke in the Library.

                Be still my heart!

Many years ago my son’s favorite preschool teacher was dating a truly *stunningly* handsome cop. When my 12-year-old daughter met him, she tells me that’s the moment she understood that she was truly and 100% heterosexual. πŸ˜€

  4. Faye May 28, 2016 / 11:18 am

Lovely Adi. I wouldn’t mind cuddling with her.

I’m babysitting until 2:30. Then I’m free of responsibility until 2:30 Tuesday. Yay!

Can’t complain. I’m sitting on the couch in my robe and pjs reading with two fans on. Kid is doing Minecraft on iPad until 12. Dog is asleep next to me. Ate bagel with veg cream cheese for breakfast. Heading towards second cup of coffee. Tons of stuff to do but one more day of procrastination won’t hurt.

    BBQ tomorrow. Leftovers Monday.

  5. Julie May 28, 2016 / 12:05 pm

Shout out to Nettie from Germany – way to represent!

Your cat is lovely. Please give her an extra cuddle from the USA πŸ™‚

  6. allein May 28, 2016 / 12:22 pm

Look at that face! So pitiful and plaintive! Clearly this cat is neglected and deprived and should come be with me where she will get all the cuddles she wants.

I’ve been holding onto this for a couple days, waiting for this thread. On my way home from work the other day I saw a guy walking his dog, a black lab; they were crossing the street ahead of my car and the dog was trotting proudly along, holding in his mouth…a kid-size yellow plastic baseball bat. And I remembered I had seen them once before, in the same area, maybe a year or two ago, so I’m guessing this is a regular thing.

    • Phred's Mom May 28, 2016 / 2:35 pm

The Trenton Thunder minor league baseball team
uses retrievers as batdogs along with human kids.
Very popular. Their soft mouths don’t scratch the
bats. Don’t know what effect slobber has.

      • allein May 28, 2016 / 2:46 pm

I’ve never been to a Thunder game. I’ve been to the Lakewood Blue Claws a few times and Somerset Patriots once. No doggies there. πŸ™

    • Laura May 28, 2016 / 4:37 pm

How adorable! I know they trained dogs to be ball dogs for Wimbledon recently, too. Dogs are so wonderful!

This morning at the dog park my husband was talking to another man, when all of a sudden the man let out a loud gasp. Apparently Melody had decided to join a pack of yards that was running about 40 yards away, so took off from a standing start to full gallop in one stride. I don’t think he’d ever seen a greyhound really turn it on before. To be fair to Melody, she’s too much of a couch potato to do it often, but it’s still pretty darned impressive when she does!

      • allein May 28, 2016 / 5:00 pm

I wonder if they use the bat to play fetch at the park, which is a block away from where we were and he could have been coming from the entrance on the cross street just ahead of me. There’s also a dog park at the far end.

  7. Patty May 28, 2016 / 12:54 pm

I have no plans for the weekend. It’s rained pretty much every day for a week. My 12 yr old Pomeranian died tuesday, suddenly. He came into the kitchen while I was cooking, woofed at me, got an ear skritch, then walked into the living room. A few seconds later my husband yelled from the living room, I went to see what was up, and Thunder was in his arms dead. He had walked into the living room and collapsed. It’s hard for me to even type about it, I didn’t even talk about it on facebook until one of my daughters posted about it (we got him for her 13th birthday from the animal shelter).
I was out at yard sales yesterday, got close to home and thought “I should stop by to take the dog out” then I remembered the dog doesn’t need to go out.

Patty, so very sorry. Hugs to you and your family.

      Have a consoling hug, Patty.
      It hurts, I know.

My condolences, I know how hard it is when one of our furry babies leaves us. I’ve been through it many times but it never gets any easier.

    • dubravkamcvmd May 28, 2016 / 2:33 pm

What an awful shock. It was fast for him, which is good, but you’re left behind, unable to communicate with him. So sad.

Oh dear, I’m so sorry about Thunder, Patty! How sad for you all. I know he had a good life with your family, but to lose him so suddenly must be shocking!

    • Rachel May 28, 2016 / 8:30 pm

      So very sorry. I have been there, and it’s so hard. It sounds like Thunder was a much-loved pup, though, which counts for just about everything. {{{{{HUGS}}}}}

  8. Birdcage May 28, 2016 / 1:40 pm

I’m digging in my garden again today – planting some begonias. It’s pretty hot and humid here today and I have a bit of a stomach ache so I’m working slowly, in the shade when I can, and taking lots of breaks. I found a small paper wasp nest hanging from a window frame – trying to decide how to encourage Madame Wasp to relocate her nest to someplace else.

    • Phred's Mom May 28, 2016 / 2:01 pm

Is the nest in a bad spot, like near a door?
I had one at my front bay window. The
wasps pretty much ignored us, or maybe
they didn’t like my decorating style, ’cause they
were there only the one summer and never
came back. As long as one doesn’t get inside,
maybe you could just leave them? They do
make one nervous, however. Merciless when
      p o ed.

      • allein May 28, 2016 / 2:05 pm

I went out on my balcony at my old apartment one day to find a nest under the edge of the roof. Went back inside and called the office pronto! Maintenance took it away the next day.

    • allein May 28, 2016 / 2:01 pm

You should give her some colored paper and see what she does with it!

      • Murray May 28, 2016 / 2:10 pm

Be careful, Phred’s Mom, it’s too hot too soon to do much outside,
especially if you’re under the weather. I’m putting off going out ’til later – SO much blankety bland weeding to get done. Away one lousy week and it’s as if I hadn’t done a thing. We came back from 50 degree weather to this heat, over 90, and I had vertigo while away, so I’m planning on going gently into that overgrown garden.πŸŒπŸ›πŸπŸžπŸœπŸ•·πŸŒΉπŸŒ·πŸŒΎπŸŒΊπŸŒ±πŸŒ»
Oh, and a fridge is on the fritz and I had to take preventive measures to keep water from leaking all over a very nice bamboo floor. Might need a new one (fridge) because it’s the one the bunny greens are housed in. Muy importante.

        • Phred's Mom May 28, 2016 / 2:21 pm

The weeds have exploded here, too, Murray.
I corraled. a few this morn at 5 AM, while it
was still cool. I woke early, said what the heck,
and got up. Summer mornings are good.
Afternoons, no. Maybe next week I can get
the rest, including chopping out invading
          honeysuckle in my azaleas. Maybe.

        • allein May 28, 2016 / 2:22 pm

I remember when I was in high school my mom asked me to weed the patch in front of the porch one day while she was at work. It was so hot out that when I was done I got in the pool for a few minutes to cool off, but that wasn’t enough and I ended up taking a nap in my parents’ room (heavy curtains made it the darkest place in the house) because I felt so drained.

          • Phred's Mom May 28, 2016 / 2:41 pm

Maybe we should move to Nome?

            • allein May 28, 2016 / 2:45 pm

As long as it’s just for the summer, I’m in!

Last Friday’s weather was perfect. Can’t we just keep that?

              • Phred's Mom May 28, 2016 / 3:11 pm

                It was ideal, Allein.
                I want more of that,
                less of this.

        • Murray C. May 29, 2016 / 10:25 am

I just realized that I should’ve written “Birdcage” when I responded about working in the heat – I sometimes get a bit bamboozled – so sorry!😳

          • Phred's Mom May 29, 2016 / 11:38 am

Is OK, Murray, we knew what you meant,
and we all took your advice. Smart.

            • Murray May 29, 2016 / 3:47 pm

I ended up going out today for a few of hours of weeding, ’til about 1. Once I get started I just can’t stop (They call it “op” – that’s all, just “op”. Who remembers THAT song???) Pretty pooped and there’s SO much more to do, but the summer months stretch before me.
I saw my first fig! I’ve only had a fig tree for a few years and I was amazed to learn that figs don’t blossom, then fruit- the fruit starts as a swelling at the base of an offshoot. Amazing. There has to be a name for that sort of reproduction – anybody know?

        • 6rabbits May 30, 2016 / 11:52 am

Ooo…you better get that frig taken care of before the bunnies find out! You will be in truuuuh-bul big time.πŸ˜‰

  9. Gigi_the cat lady May 28, 2016 / 2:00 pm

    Today I am doing….nothing!

    • allein May 28, 2016 / 2:08 pm

Me too! Weather.com says it’s 89 outside. I have a headache and no desire to even open the curtains, let alone go outside. Maybe after dark I’ll take out the trash and check the mail.

      • Phred's Mom May 28, 2016 / 2:14 pm

Sounds sensible. I was just out with Mr. Wonderful
and couldn’t wait to get inside out of the sun. 90-ish
here N of Philly. Will spend the afternoon with the
Phils (have mercy, they’re playing the Cubbies), then
reading. Those weather headaches are misery, I know.

      • Murray May 28, 2016 / 2:14 pm

        You be careful! No migraines!

        • allein May 28, 2016 / 2:24 pm

Too late! This just hurts, though. I don’t want to throw up or anything like last time. (Maybe not a real migraine but the pain fits. Took some drugs and caffeine and hopefully they will help soon.)

          • Phred's Mom May 28, 2016 / 3:18 pm

            Hang in there, Allein.
            I know how you feel.
            I found that just when
            it gets so bad you’re
            afraid you’re NOT going
            to die, that’s the worst
            and it eases gradually.
            About all one can say
            is that migraines teach
            endurance. So glad I’m
            past the severe ones.
            Still get “lead-head”
            occasionally. Sometimes
            an Excedrin helps if the
            stomach is ok.
            Mentally I am sending
            you cool hands on your

Thanks πŸ™‚ It’s getting better. I am now eating ice cream with a sliced banana. For potassium. Cuz headache can be a symptom of low potassium. So it’s medicine.

                I believe every word.
                Personally, I go to

                when I have lead-head.
                Only folks in Jersey and
                PA know ’em. The were
                invented for the doughboys
                during WWI as a portable,
                quick source of energy and
                a little nourishment. I consider
them a vitamin as well as a treat.
                No joke.

I remember them, but I can’t eat peanuts.

On a side note, I’ve gotten a handful of comment notifications twice. Are you messing around again, NTMTOM?

                • Murray C. May 28, 2016 / 9:06 pm

I didn’t know about their history! I got a little bag to take to England with us and they’re almost gone now. I always loved them, a favorite in my Halloween bag.πŸ˜‹

                  • Phred's Mom May 29, 2016 / 8:58 am

                    They are “almost gone”?
                    You’re a better man than
I am, Murray C. They would
                    be history around here, and
                    replaced with the next batch.
I limit myself to one or two
a day, like a vitamin, of course.
But they do pick one up. It’s
                    the dark chocolate. Yum.

                    • Phred's Mom May 29, 2016 / 9:07 am

Why, oh why, am I in the Mod Lounge,
                      NTMTOM? Whaddidisay? We’re talking
                      candy here.

                    • Not That Mike The Other Mike May 29, 2016 / 9:21 am

I’m not sure what the problem is. You haven’t broken any rules, because there is only one rule, and as far as I can see your posts aren’t breaking it. I do apologize for the inconvenience, but please keep posting, and I’ll clear your posts manually as fast as I can.

Other than washing dishes, unpacking food tomorrow, I have no responsibilities for 72 hours!! Other people are cooking. So all I have to do is eat and drink Red’s Wicked Apple and Black Cherry Ale!!

    • Phred's Mom May 28, 2016 / 4:46 pm

I just now looked up Red’s Wicked whatnots.
And, oh joy, they are available at a bunch of
places here in my town. I’m partial to hard
cider and Guinness, and must try these, too.

      • Faye May 28, 2016 / 7:03 pm

Red’s is not hard cider. It is a light ale. I hardly drink so this is just right for me. There is original with 6% alcohol and Wicked with 8%. All tasty.

        • Phred's Mom May 29, 2016 / 9:04 am

          Red’s. sounds good.
          This has been a public
          service announcement.

          • Faye May 29, 2016 / 7:32 pm

I’m stuffed with beef and I had two Red’s. Hours apart but that’s big drinking for me.

            • allein May 29, 2016 / 7:45 pm

I just made experimental chicken gravy using butter, flour, and chicken stock. It came out pretty good. Poached chicken, leftover rice, peas, and gravy for dinner. πŸ™‚

Now I need to make some other kind of grain and vegetable to go with the rest of the chicken and gravy for lunches next week.

      • Murray C. May 28, 2016 / 9:07 pm

Woman after my own heart – I love Guinness. A meal in a mug.

        • Phred's Mom May 29, 2016 / 9:02 am

Guinness is good for you, indeed.
I’m not much of a drinker, either,
          having been a migraineuse, but
          Guinness does go down nicely,,
          without the resulting horrible
          head. It barely buzzes one.

What part of Germany? I live in Frankfurt and am missing kitty cuddles!

    • Not That Mike The Other Mike May 28, 2016 / 3:47 pm

Welcome, Colleen! Perhaps Nettie will tell us more about herself (and share more pics of Adi!). I’m so happy that I have readers in other countries.

      • Nettie May 29, 2016 / 4:19 pm

Thanks for posting Adi’s picture, Mike, and for the warm welcome.

    • Nettie May 28, 2016 / 6:17 pm

We’re in Hamburg. If you’re ever up our way, stop in.

      • Smartypants May 29, 2016 / 2:47 pm

Nice to meet you, Nettie! Adi is gorgeous – does she know she’s now an international celebrity?

        • Nettie May 29, 2016 / 4:08 pm

Adi is a boy, actually πŸ™‚ (one of those pretty boys who are constantly mistaken for a girl). I think he thinks I’m spending way too much time staring into this screen and way too little time playing with my darling panther. I did a photoshoot with some people today down at the harbour in the rain and just finished looking at all the pictures, deciding which ones to send to the client. Adi is meowing from the other room that it’s Time to Play!!!

Nice to meet all of you. I’m American, btw, living abroad since ’92, though.

  12. Phred's Mom May 29, 2016 / 11:45 am

Less humid today, a little cooler (cooler being a relative term),
and, huzzah! A breeze! Wet tomorrow, thanks to Bonnie/Brenda whomever,
which is a shame. My town has a dynamite Memorial Day Parade, the oldest
in the U S of A, I’ll have you know, and it would be a shame for it to be rained
out. Garden actually could use a drink, but not tomorrow, puleeze.

    • Phred's Mom May 29, 2016 / 12:13 pm

Well, one of the oldest. Started 1867 to remember
those locals lost in Civil War, and , I think, the
Revolution. Lots of both in these hyar parts.

    • Murray May 30, 2016 / 3:31 pm

Now that it’s Memorial Day, I hope your parade came off well. Nice that the rain seemed to fall during the night – and a good rain it was.

      • allein May 30, 2016 / 3:44 pm

I heard the rain as I was going to bed. It’s kinda cloudy now, though.

Start of the weekend has been both sad and happy. Sister called Friday and asked if I’d go to the vet with her on Saturday to get her remaining kitty, [Cat] Ballou checked. Unfortunately, Ballou didn’t get to come home. Sister has lost husband and 2 kitties in the last 8 months. Later on Saturday, went to the local humane society to pick up a foster chihuahua (Gracie) I’ll be caring for this coming week. They goes…and they comes…and they goes…

    • Phred's Mom May 29, 2016 / 3:43 pm

Give Amazing Gracie a welcome cuddle from us.
She can help to comfort your sister. Life does have
a way of throwing one into the barrel, sometimes
too frequently to cope. I wish her comfort.

    • Murray May 29, 2016 / 3:50 pm

That’s a lot to deal with – my condolences.

    • Mariana May 29, 2016 / 6:45 pm

Oh. I’m sorry.. Too many losses in too little time. My condolences. Here’s hoping for better times ahead

    • Faye May 29, 2016 / 7:34 pm

Oh my. Very sad time. So sorry.

  14. Em May 29, 2016 / 6:46 pm

Mike, I was studying the Pallas cat the other day, they’re wonderfully expressive. Perhaps we can have a post which features one? Hope everyone here has a good week ahead.

  15. Faye May 30, 2016 / 11:26 am

Hi Mike. I love the longer Stimulus and Response list. Keeps more posts and comments current so we can enjoy longer! And talk more.
