People who leave their dogs or children in hot cars should be made to sit in one for as long as the poor little mites did. I don’t care what excuses they make (oh it was only for a few mitutes … ) It’s never OK to leave a child or a pet in a locked car, kudos to the man who broke the window, I would have done the same thing.

Watched the video and at the end the little dog is prancing around all happy, and you can hear the lady playing with him say “Your owner’s an _ _ _hole.” No kidding! ? The owners didnt show up til 50 minutes after the dog had been rescued; he would have been dead by then. Very glad that man took matters into his own hands!?? Glad the police took the dog. Would love to have a follow up.

Gigi, you are far more merciful than I am. I won’t say what I would do to people who leave either kids or pets in cars like that–it might force poor NTMTOM to move me into the monitor lounge. In some cases it is considered illegal to do what this wonderful man did, other places it’s not. I don’t know which it is in this place, but clearly this fine person did not care and I applaud him.

I agree – it blows my mind that every summer we still have this annual ritual of idiots leaving their pets/kids in a hot car. How is this still a thing?

If that fellow has to pay any type of fine for breaking the window, I imagine plenty of people will chip in, but hopefully it won’t come to that. He is awesome! Good job, hoomin.

Mama otter says: “Get back here; we’ve been looking all over for you!”. Other otters are saying: “Where you been … you smell funny.” Toby otter says: “You wouldn’t believe what I’ve been through! But I’m glad to be home.”

Exactly what I was thinking when I sent this in! ?

I so want to hit that beach with a pair of gloves and huge lawn bags. what a bunch of garbage!

    • sepaz June 16, 2016 / 12:41 am

Touching video. But I was stunned by the amount of trash on the poor otters’ beach. Most of it was plastic water bottles, from what I could tell.

LOVE the otter video (and the squeaks!) but is anyone else repulsed by the amount of human garbage on the beach? DISGUSTING. I wonder how long it takes for that much waste to accumulate… days? weeks? Perhaps no one ever picks up the garbage? Anyone from Singapore on here that can fill us in?

I live in Vancouver, BC with a gazillion km’s of ocean shoreline and we regularly do shoreline cleanups. It’s the only way to stay on top of all the stuff that rolls in.

    Happy Wednesday, y’all!

    • 6rabbits June 15, 2016 / 1:30 pm

I thought it weird that the majority of the trash is water bottles!

    • Phred's Mom June 15, 2016 / 1:40 pm

I’m with you. The trash is hideous. I apparently was wrong in believing
Singapore really, really strict about littering, since they will jail you for
dropping a cigaret butt, or trash in the street. Howcum this beautiful
beach looks like you-know-what? A disgrace.

There’s a huge amount of plastic waste floating in the Earth’s oceans. No matter how punctilious a country is about controlling littering, tons of plastic waste may wash up on its shores. I think the only solution is for us humans to reduce the amount of plastic waste we produce–and that’s not easy, because there’s not a strong market for recycling plastics and it’s hard to avoid plastics in our consumption.

This is a good article about how much plastic waste winds up in the ocean: http://www.sciencemag.org/news/2015/02/here-s-how-much-plastic-enters-ocean-each-year

I feel as though I try to reduce my own plastic waste production, but I look back on my day today, and count: 1 plastic cup, 1 styro food container, 1 plastic fork, 1 plastic pop bottle . . . I live in a city with a robust recycling program, but of all those things only the pop bottle is recyclable.

The popularity of bottled water has resulted in an environmental nightmare. It’s a mystery to me why people living in countries with safe, clean tap water buy the stuff.

Constant convenience has become the “western world”‘s standard.
I am one of just two residents on my street who will hang laundry out
to dry, while all the rest use dryers even on the best sunny, breezy
days. And most of these folks have at least one person home during
the day to do it. Yet they will say they are “green”, whatever the heck
that means anymore. It’s hard to grasp that there are that many
plastic bottles in the oceans. Horrible.

There are plenty of cities in America with unsafe tap water. When my sister’s ctiy’s recent water contaminent report came out, the city even recommended bottled water for drinking! My city has excellent water and we are near each other in the same state!

          • Gigi_the cat lady June 16, 2016 / 10:09 am

There is an easy fix to the bottle water problem, put a deposit on them, make them returnable like with soft drink bottle. It wouldn’t be a miracle cure but you don’t see as many soft drink bottles in the garbage as water bottle because people don’t like to throw away money.

            • Michelle P June 16, 2016 / 1:46 pm

Fortunately, there’s a deposit on them here. I regularly save our refundables and then put them out for the binners in our neighbourhood.

Thanks for the link, Sepaz! Very interesting (and frightening) article.

Those pusheen stickers are fun. Didn’t know that’s what they were called.

Sweetie needs to lay off those fries and shakes though, but I did enjoy that pizza one
