I started listening to that a couple weeks ago. I have made it a bit of a game to see if I can figure out who he’s talking about before he gets to the end. ๐Ÿ™‚

          • allein July 6, 2016 / 11:17 pm

            I think you’ll be fine.

(I believe I’ve seen one Rambo movie in my life and it was only because other people were watching it.)

          • 6rabbits July 7, 2016 / 12:55 am

I would go so far as to say your life will be infinitly better because you DIDN’T see First Blood!!?

Our resident wild bun ate my newly-planted lupin,
thereby earning my look of disapproval. S/he is getting
accustomed to seeing us and is not freezing or bolting
when we come out into the yard. A real cutie.

When I little I thought Bambi was a girl until he grew up at the end of the movie and had antlers.

    • Muppet2171 July 7, 2016 / 7:33 am

IKR? When did Bambi become a girl’s name?

      • Murray C. July 7, 2016 / 9:46 am

Awful lot of strippers named Bambi. Is it short for bambino/a?

        • 6rabbits July 7, 2016 / 1:22 pm

LOTS of “girl” names started out as male. Generally, any male name ending in the letter y, or ending with a long e sound, will be appropriated for girls at some point in its history. Beverly, Courtney, Stacey, Tracey, Kelly, Aubrey, Kimberly and Hayley were purely boy names first. (Though that’s not the only type of name that migrates to female, e.g. Evelyn, Constance and Dana.) Predictably the name goes through a period where it’s used for both sexes before finally settling into “female only”. Once that happens, a name rarely reverts to male use. One exception is Bailey, which had finally settled into a few decades as “female only” before reverting to male use in the ’80s, due to the popularity of a character in a long-running television show. Name meaning and use is a fascinating area of study!?

          • Murray C. July 7, 2016 / 3:44 pm

It’s similar to the issue of colors. My understanding, tho’ I can’t remember where I read it, is that red, representing the Sacred Heart (of Jeus) and by extension, pink, was the color for boys, while blue, for the Blessed Mother, was for girls. That is, until Queen Victoria came along and switched it around. I have a friend whose mother “dedicated” her to the Blessed Mother which meant making her wear blue for the first seven years of her life!

            • allein July 7, 2016 / 4:31 pm

I remember reading that red (and by extension, pink) was just considered a “strong” color so it was for boys.

            • 6rabbits July 7, 2016 / 5:43 pm

I did not know that! Very interesting!?

          • E Z Reader July 7, 2016 / 5:31 pm

sidetrack: I had an Uncle Shirley and there are still a few men called Shirley in NS. When he was born he didn’t say “Don’t call me Shirley”!

            • Murray C. July 7, 2016 / 10:32 pm

And in that movie the actor’s name was Leslie!

          • allein July 7, 2016 / 5:33 pm

I work with a guy named Courtney (he used to be my boss). He works remotely from another state, so people here who’ve never met or spoken to him always assume he’s a woman.

            • 6rabbits July 7, 2016 / 5:57 pm

In 1990 I had a student who had been picked on throughout his elementary years because his name was Constance. So I explained to the class that it really was a boy’s name, even with the nickname “Connie”. The kid stood up and said, “THANK YOU!” Then turned to the class and said, “Seeee?!” He had a somewhat easier time after that. In ’99 I had a “Dana” with the same issues. Some people don’t seem to give a lot of thought to what their kid will go through with certain names. As a teacher, I’ve heard some doozies!?

              • allein July 7, 2016 / 6:19 pm

                I got called alien.

The only Danas I knew were girls but I grew up in the era of Dana Carvey on SNL so I knew it could go either way.

                • 6rabbits July 7, 2016 / 6:48 pm

Gotta admit when I first saw your name I did a double take!? (So is it pronounced “a-leen” or “al-in”? I always imagined the first way.)
Because of his popularity, Dana Carvey was the celebrity example I used for my student.

                  • allein July 7, 2016 / 7:17 pm

                    it’s AL – LEEN

Kinda like Allen (as in Woody Allen) but with a long e.

“Aileen” is the most common mispronunciation I get, (to the point where I often ignore it) but I’ve gotten all kinds of things.

I had a professor in college who said it more like “al-layn” but he had a thick Tennessee accent so I gave him the benefit of the doubt. ๐Ÿ˜‰

          • Gigi_the cat lady July 8, 2016 / 7:03 am

It’s a lot easier with French male names, we just add an e at the end and voilร ! you have a female name. Example : Andrรฉ (boy) Andrรฉe (girl) Pascal (boy) Pascalle (girl)

            • 6rabbits September 21, 2016 / 7:34 am

Is it true that in France there is a list of approved first names and you can only use a name from that list for your kid? Was told that a decade or so ago and have always wondered!?

Bambi has yet to learn the concept of personal space.
