And Now, This Message From the Association of Broccoli Growers

Hey there, fellow kids! Whether you’re catching “sick air” on your skateboard or creating “dank memes” on Twitbook, you need healthy “noms” like broccoli forย “radical” energy! Take it from Eric the Broccoli Bird, who’s “on fleek” when his “bae” serves him nutritious broccoli! “Amirite,” Eric?

We need to hire another Eric, Megan W.

The boid does a spot-on imitation of his owner’s voice. ERIC! IT”S NOICE!!!!!!

Like any feathered rascal, Eric likes the sound of his metal dish clanging against the countertop and then the floor. And then the sound of his own voice saying “ERIC!!!” He’s learned that trick – it has nothing to do with whether he likes his broccoli!

For some reason, I’m not convinced that Eric loves broccoli.

(I do love pets with people names, though.)

I love broccoli, but I also love Eric!

I know next to nothing about pet birds, would a bird like Eric eat broccoli?

P.S I like broccoli as long as it’s serve with a creamy parmesan sauce or a nice butter sauce.

A quick Google search on “do parrots like broccoli?” seems to suggest that they often do, and that it’s a healthy food for them. Parrot owners should do more research, of course.

PS: Put me in the pro-broccoli camp, too. Good source of protein.

My eclectus parrot eats exclusively a homemade “chop” of veggies & other organic freshness that I make for him. It contains a good deal of broccoli. Every parrot is different, but eclectus parrots have a looooooooong digestive tract and very specific dietary needs as a result. They need calcium from green leafy veggies and beta-carotene from orange and red veggies. I can’t really buy a commercial bird food that serves his purposes – most storebought parrot pellets and seed mixes are potentially harmful if fed to a bird like mine exclusively. It left me no choice but to make my own (which many eclectus owners chose to do). So my guy does eat (and likes, but doesn’t love) his broccoli. But you should see the kale fly. Kale is the devil’s work, in Merlin’s eyes.

How many birdies do you have?

          • birdcage July 8, 2016 / 4:50 pm

I have had as many as 4 at one time. It’s presently just me and His Green Highness, flinger of kale.

My bun, Theo, will take his kale in a heartbeat!

I love broccoli but always preferred the stems – I like the florets, but the stems are my fave. I was rather surprised to learn that most of their nutritional value is in the stems! I worked in an English restaurant once that served a family style mix of broccoli, carrots, potatoes, etc. but only served the florets and I”d see a huge trashcan of the stems sent out for trash and I lamented what a waste it was.

When I was a kid I wouldn’t eat the florets at all. My mom still makes sure there’s at least a serving worth of stems in the dish if she makes broccoli when I’m eating at their house. Now I’ll eat the florets but I still prefer the stems. (I actually eat a lot of broccoli now because that’s the vegetable side in the cafeteria at least 50% of the time (I had broccoli and rice for lunch today).

I still wouldn’t say I love broccoli, though.

Roasted broccoli and roasted stems. Olive oil, salt, pepper, chopped garlic or dried. Liberal amounts of all mixed with fresh or frozen chopped broccoli. Roast in a pan on top of stove or in oven until slightly browned or a tiny touch burnt. Eat hot or cold mixed in pasta or on own.

    • D B July 8, 2016 / 5:53 pm

ha! i know that reference! so all her pets must be named Eric, then. (including the half a bee)

  7. Faye July 8, 2016 / 2:13 pm

I think Eric is a bit “fed up”.

  8. Smartypants July 8, 2016 / 3:34 pm

Hehe, I love how he even flings the bowl overboard – ‘nope, it smells like broccoli – it’s outta here!’ ๐Ÿ˜€

      • Smartypants July 8, 2016 / 7:43 pm

Oh, I grew up with that cartoon – thanks! (gotta love the New Yorker).

I love broccoli (spinach, not so much…).

  9. fkaWaldenPond July 8, 2016 / 6:28 pm

I love how he wipes his beak clean in disgust.

This made me laugh much more than I expected it would. Eric is hilarious. He even mangles the broccoli to convey his distaste.
I myself LOVE broccoli al dente with just a hint of olive oil. The crunchier the better. Goes with just about everything
