Did my mother write this headline?

    “warsh”

Is your mom from Western Pennsylvania?

      • allein July 9, 2016 / 4:04 pm

        Nope. Central New Jersey.

        • Kar July 9, 2016 / 4:18 pm

I grew up in Central Jersey, can’t recall which exit, and we said “Wawsh.” My Pittsburgh relatives said “warsh.”

            My aunts from Nebraska “worsh.”

Once upon a time I saw an anecdote in Reader’s Digest that discussed the “conservation of consonants in the US.” It kind of went along these lines: if they add the “r” into worsh in Nebraska (New Jersey, Western PA) it must be lost somewhere else. Which is why they say “cah” in Boston instead of “car.” The article had a lot more examples and I really wish I could find it again. It was so funny.

In the old days if you were Jewish and from NYC Lower East Side or Brooklyn or had relatives from it was VASH.

              • D B July 9, 2016 / 8:55 pm

In eastern MA we do a weird kind of r conservation: we drop them from the words that have them, like “cah,” and then randomly add them to words that shouldn’t have them, like “arear.” as in, “The cahs ah in the arear.”

I think the only thing that makes it seem like we’re trying at all is to pronounce the u in “aunt.” but then of course most folks say “ant.”

I had a nun as a history teacher who was from New England and it was endlessly amusing to me that she said “Asiar Minah”.

What town (if you don’t mind my asking)?

            • Kar July 9, 2016 / 9:35 pm

Garwood. If you blink between Cranford and Westfield you missed it.

              • allein July 9, 2016 / 10:52 pm

That’s about an hour from me, according to the all-knowing google. My mom actually grew up in Keyport.

                • Kar July 10, 2016 / 1:15 am

One thing I learned living in Jersey, you DON’T go to the Keyport Fishery on Good Friday. Being Presbyterians, we didn’t think anything of it but the usual pilgrimage for great fish with cole slaw and fries by the water.

Well, the line was literally three blocks long outside the door.

People in Southern Ohio say “warsh”.

I’m pretty sure you will find “warsh” enthusiasts all over the country.

      • Dana July 10, 2016 / 9:55 am

They say that in NE Ohio too and that is exactly how my mom would pronounce it.

I doubt that matters to this poor doggie ?

        • LunaChickFringe July 11, 2016 / 8:55 am

Yes. NEO here and I say warsh. My SO, who is from Akron, which is a bit southwest of Cleveland loves to needle me about it. The do not say warsh down there, apparently but they also say “devil strip” which I had never heard before I met him. This could be a thread all it’s own.

          • Claire July 11, 2016 / 10:55 am

Hooray for all the Ohioans here! My grandma says “warsh” as well. We’re from southwest Ohio. I always assumed it was because she grew up too close to the hills, but maybe not…

            • LunaChickFringe July 11, 2016 / 12:07 pm

I find it to be very spotty. My mother, who grew up in Kentucky, says it but my father, who grew up in NW Ohio did not say it.

          • Murray C. July 11, 2016 / 1:01 pm

LunaChick Fringe – (love your name) – what does “devil strip mean”? I’ve tried every way I can think of and can’t make out what it means.

            • allein July 11, 2016 / 1:08 pm

Urban dictionary told me it’s the strip of grass between the sidewalk and the road.

              • Murray C. July 11, 2016 / 1:31 pm

Ah, what we call the verge.

              • LunaChickFringe July 11, 2016 / 2:15 pm

Thanks! We call it the tree lawn – the lawn between the sidewalk and the street. Apparently “devil strip” is unique to the Akron area. I remember getting quite a few eyerolls when I asked what the heck they were talking about.

                • allein July 11, 2016 / 2:17 pm

I never thought about it before, but I’ve realized I’ve never had a specific name for it…

That Princess Leia Bun headdress is awesome!!

    • Emmberrann July 9, 2016 / 2:34 pm

      Gotta keep the ears dry!

    • Murray C. July 9, 2016 / 4:10 pm

I want to learn how to do one. Not sure why, exactly. What a completely darling pooch! I once heard that a huge percentage of the country says “warsh” but I don’t know. We certainly had neighbors who did which I thought was pretty funny.

      • 6rabbits July 9, 2016 / 5:22 pm

My family always said “warsh” which is common randomly throughout Indiana. When I was in 5th grade another girl asked me why I said it that way cos there was no R. After that I stared paying attention to others’ pronunciation, and retrained myself to say “wash”. I became very annoying to my parents cos I constantly corrected them! My younger siblings say “wash”. Really stands out at family reunions!?

LOL, maybe one of my favorite headers this year. 😀

  4. JenDeyan July 9, 2016 / 4:18 pm

What’s really amazing is that the pup sat still for that. My pup wouldn’t.

  5. Faye July 9, 2016 / 5:49 pm

Looks just like Leia. I didn’t know Obi-Wan was into that kinda thing.

  6. scoobiesnacks July 9, 2016 / 9:33 pm

I’m gonna try this with my cat, see what results I get.

    • Murray C. July 9, 2016 / 10:10 pm

And you’d like the flowers sent where?

      • 6rabbits July 9, 2016 / 11:39 pm

I just burst out laughing and startled my bunny!?

    • allein July 9, 2016 / 10:48 pm

You have the Costco-size box of band-aids, I hope..

What cats think of taking a baths

      • Murray C. July 10, 2016 / 10:17 am

Stop making the poor cat say “no more” and get her outta there! Poor puss.

        • 6rabbits July 10, 2016 / 1:59 pm

Poor kitteh! She needs some cuddles!

  7. Muppet2171 July 9, 2016 / 11:21 pm

Star Wars came out when I was in kindergarten. I thought Princess Leia’s hair was the greatest thing ever – I understand Carrie Fisher hated it tho – and I made my mom give me a version of it for my ballet recital. I don’t think I was nearly as cute as that pup…
