Gotta Catch a Ball

So I’ve been noticing a lot of new people running around the park lately, waving their smartphones and hunting down tiny monsters that only they can see. Pfft! What a bunch of Johnny-Come-Lately amateurs! I’ve been chasing imaginary creatures all my life, and I don’t even need an app!

I don’t exactly understand the whole Pokémon Go craze, then again, I’m the woman who still has a flip phone. But from what I’ve read on the news people have lost their minds for that game, so much so that places like police stations, churches and even Auschwitz had to declare themselves to be off limits because gamers would go there to “hunt” Pokémon !

I think this little guy is much cuter than any Pokémon, especially love the little floppy ears.

I have heard there are a lot of churches that are poke-spots. (Or whatever they call them. I’m too old for this stuff.)

Yes, and the 2001 memorial in NYC, the Holocaust Museum, among others.
It’s one of the reasons why I feel we’re racing along in a 90-mile-an-hour handbasket.
Where’s the dang chocolate when I need it!?!?!

The Holocaust Museum in Israel also put itself off limits.

I want to gently boop this guy’s nose, then cover it with kisses.

There have also been various car accidents and one mugging. I guess I’m not surprised about the locations, tho maybe they might learn something at the museums!

Doggeh has the right idea–play with a ball!

      • Phred's Mom July 14, 2016 / 1:02 pm

You’re too optimistic about them learning in the museums, though it is
a nice thought. I doubt they are paying that kind of attention to their
actual surroundings, hence the accidents and the forbidden entry to
many locations due to the players’ behavior.

I work in the financial district of downtown Toronto, Ontario, and I just witnessed my first Pokemon Go “swarm” on the street outside my office. Hoards of young people descending on a street corner, everyone staring wildly at their screens instead of watching their footings. The mob physically shoved several lawyers, bankers and insurance professionals out of the way (some of you maybe think that’s a good & proper thing). Some poor schlep with a styrofoam container from the food court actually dropped their lunch to its ruin. Pigeons then joined the fray to scoop up the spilled souvlaki. It was 20 seconds of utter chaos and then it was over. As interesting as it may be as a social phenomenon, please LOOK UP FROM YOUR SCREENS if participating! No one need get hurt over such a game. Dogs and cats living together, mass hysteria!!!!!

Yep, cute doggie needs someone to toss that thing.

I spent a couple of hours in the ER with my adult daughter the other night. She had hit her head twice in one day, and woke up the next day feeling nauseous, her head throbbing, and feeling confused. I met her at the ER, and said, “how did you hit your head twice?” The first time was in the park, and she said she bent down under a small tree, forgot the branch was there and stood up right into it. I said, “How could you not remember a branch above your head?” Her mumbled reply: “there was a pokemon…” Later that day she was at work, and bent down to reach a shelf, stood back up to hit her head (in a different spot) on the coffee machine. She has a concussion, and the ER doc advised against doing any pokemon hunting for the week.

    • Gigi_the cat lady July 14, 2016 / 8:26 pm

Hope she feels better and lays off the Pokémon for a while 🤕

    • Murray C. July 14, 2016 / 8:50 pm

Well, if it’s any help, we have a beam in our attic and I have clonked myself a good one quite a few times. It’s in a very awkward spot. I don’t think I’ve done it enough to get a concussion – I think I might know – maybe. But I hope your daughter is on the mend and that she is a good compliant patient.

So did she find any pokemon at the hospital? 😛

Churches, museums and monuments that can be detected by Google maps are being marked as Pokestops and Gyms. Pokestops are places where people can reload on supplies and Gyms are where people can have their pokemon battle. But any area can randomly have a pokemon.

People are having a lot of fun reliving their nostalgia days when Pokemon first started and was really popular. Unfortunately, some of them are getting too caught up in the fun not using their heads. I’m having fun with it myself but I’m not going anywhere dangerous. There’s plenty of safe places to play.

    • Murray C. July 14, 2016 / 4:03 pm

I don’t get any of this and I often wonder if there aren’t many many more creative things to do in life!? I’m always amazed when I hear someone say, “Gee, what shall I do today?”

      • Phred's Mom July 14, 2016 / 4:14 pm

Me,too, Murray. I have little patience or sympathy with someone
who says they are bored/ have nothing to do. C’mere, I’ll give you
a list of stuff to do around here.

        • Murray C. July 14, 2016 / 4:39 pm

Well, I have to admit to occasionally feeling a little bit jealous……..🙄

  5. JenDeyan July 14, 2016 / 4:40 pm

Think about it this way. It’s the power of nostalgia for one. When most of the people who are playing this were kids, it was a way to get together with friends and do something fun. Also, in the world this game created, kids could do things adults do. They could leave home and travel the world. Gain fame and fortune through study, hard work and determination. Age doesn’t matter in a Pokemon battle. Only skill. So it’s really enchanting when you’re at that age where you’re growing and figuring out your own potential.

People remember that and are reliving going back into that world. As for me, I wasn’t a kid when I started playing but it does happen to be a fun game. Also, it has TONS of adorable, little creatures to interact with. Kinda made for someone like me.

    • Patty July 14, 2016 / 4:48 pm

Also, it gets people out of the house getting exercise. If it makes exercise fun, it’s cool with me, as long as people are careful while they are staring at their phones. No pokego while driving, please. Oh, and don’t be mad when your mom makes fun of you for hitting your head hard enough to cause a concussion, lol.

      • Murray C. July 14, 2016 / 8:52 pm

Well argues, Jendeyan and Patty. Us oldsters are just too far removed to really understand (I guess I should speak for myself!😜
