Every Day Is Groundhog Day

Hey, you’ve got to look at this picture of a groundhog who visits the same office window every day for lunch! And when you’re done with that, check out this picture of a groundhog who visits the same office window every day for lunch!

Sender-inner Smartypants notes: “I particularly like the scrolldown to the family-size bag of carrots – clearly this really is a daily thing for them!” Via Imgur.

Do you ever get déjà vu?

    • Faye July 20, 2016 / 8:12 pm

I have the feeling you just asked that question.

    • Smartypants July 21, 2016 / 9:14 am

Say…do you ever get déjà vu?

      • allein July 21, 2016 / 9:14 am

I swear somebody asked that question yesterday…

        • Faye July 21, 2016 / 9:51 am

I have a feeling I’ve heard that question recently. Hmmm, odd…

I am SCREAMING laughing. I guess partly because I actually GET it!? I can only assume you never get tired of hearing how funny you are, NTM? Well, you are.

    Don’t drive angry!

“What is this, Miami Beach?” “Not hardly!”
    “BING!”
“There will be no tomorrow; there wasn’t one today!”
“Ned the head? Needle nose Ned? Got the shingles real bad senior year? Did the whistling belly button trick in the senior talent show? I dated your sister Mary-Pat until you told me not to”

Honestly, we’ve watched that movie every single Groundhog Day for the past 15 years in a row. My car is even named Rita because we bought her on Feb 2.

And am I the only one wondering what decade this photo is from? The man has a rolodex on his desk!!

    • Murray C. July 20, 2016 / 8:10 pm

I still have a Rolodex – but, then again, I’m “up there” as they say.

      • fkaWaldenPond July 20, 2016 / 8:14 pm

I just realized you guys commented on the Rolodex already! We have one at work too! It is entirely out of date but I won’t let anyone throw it out.

        • Faye July 20, 2016 / 8:22 pm

We had a disgruntled librarian who threw out the Reference Desk Rolodex cards. The senior librarian made her fish them out of the garbage. This was before we had embraced the Internet fully. Quick answers to unusual reference questions.

Truly Faye, one of my favourite memories is using the index cards to search out a book via Dewey-Decimal. I loved the feel of well- thumbed cardboard, the smell, the silent, heavy slide of the wooden oblong drawers– and once in a while you would hit ‘new-book!’ card as it was stiff and crisp compared to the others. 🙂 Ahhhh, good memories. 🙂

Do you ever watch Big Bang Theory? In the back of Leonard and Sheldon’s living room they have a card catalog. I want it so badly.

              • Faye July 20, 2016 / 10:41 pm

Ooo FKA and Allein yes to you both. I kick myself for not getting a set of catalogue drawers. We had computer terminals on top of the card catalogues during the “great Dewey migration”.

Great memories but truly obsolete IMHO. See. See also. Do you remember those cards?

                • Julie July 21, 2016 / 8:08 am

Faye, Allein and FKA – I have an old school card catalog!!

It’s shockingly heavy. I don’t use it for anything because the drawers are too small to hold anything useful, but I can’t bear to get rid of it.

I also have one of those old postcard holders that used to hang in restaurants and bars in the mid to late 90’s that held advert postcards.

I just need a rotary telephone and I will be all set!!

                  • allein July 21, 2016 / 8:28 am

Yeah, I don’t know what I’d keep in the drawers, and I don’t have a place to put it, but I still want one.

When I worked in the bookstore we had a postcard rack. We didn’t sell many and it’s long gone now.

                    • Faye July 21, 2016 / 8:49 am

Subset of craving card catalog drawers is drooling over old dental tool drawers.

                    • allein July 21, 2016 / 9:00 am

I like those apothecary cabinets, too.

                  • Faye July 21, 2016 / 8:52 am

Those old card catalogs are made from good old fashioned solid wood. Lol.

They are coveted now and go for a hefty price.

Good for keeping small art or craft items.

                  • Murray C. July 21, 2016 / 9:22 am

I have my parent’s old rotary phone – I keep it in the basement. Never call out on it – tales too long. And I have a candlestick phone but it might be a reproduction, not sure. I had it working for a while but it’s painful to use.

                    • allein July 21, 2016 / 9:28 am

We have a family friend who collects antiques and has a few old phones. One is the wooden box type that mounts on the wall with the ear piece separate from the mouth piece; another is a table-top version of the same type. They all work, as far as I know (or at least did when I was a kid; I don’t think they’re actually hooked up in their current house, though).

                  • Smartypants July 21, 2016 / 9:23 am

I love cool old stuff like that – old hand tools too.

The Vermont Country Store site actually has rotary phones that work with the modern phone system (I’m not sure if they are reproductions, or actual rotary-phone shells that have been retrofitted with pushbuttons).

                  • Sedro6 July 21, 2016 / 3:20 pm

I have one too, with 48 drawers and the table stand. And I keep in it: spools of thread, rick-rack, special notions, CDs, and even a few very special VHS tapes.

                • allein July 21, 2016 / 8:30 am

I am old enough to have used a card catalog when I was in school. I think things were moving to computer around when I was in high school.

I also used microfiche fairly regularly in college.

                  • Faye July 21, 2016 / 8:47 am

As a Librarian I am thrilled to see old records and newspapers migrating from fiche to digital records. Digitalization makes all of this material searchable by keyword or in search engines like Google. Sooooo fast.

                  • 6rabbits July 22, 2016 / 12:00 am

I was still using card catalogs in college. Microfiche was rather avant-gard. The TIME it took?!

            • Julie July 21, 2016 / 8:01 am

I miss the Dewey Decimal system. I thought it was brilliant.

              • Faye July 21, 2016 / 8:44 am

Julie the Dewey Decimal System is alive and well. That will persist to catalog books, it is only the format that has become electronic. The Dewey Decimal System underlies classification of subject matter on the net for ebooks and wikis.

        • Murray C. July 20, 2016 / 8:48 pm

Mine takes really small cards and is made out of a pinky-beige metal with a roll-top hood. I really don’t use it anymore and will probably either end up at a thrift store (which is where I first acquired it) or on Craigslist, I don’t know yet. Some people equate their brains to computers but I’ve always thought of mine as a Rolodex, with my ears as the knobs.?

    • Faye July 20, 2016 / 8:14 pm

My all time favorite movie. Ever.

  5. Duckie July 20, 2016 / 6:53 pm

    What happens on the weekend?

    • Haha July 20, 2016 / 8:23 pm

      That’s my question as well

    • Smartypants July 21, 2016 / 9:10 am

I bet they send him off on Friday with a nice care package of treats from the break room – a leftover salad and a donut or two, and he’s all set! 😀

      • Faye July 21, 2016 / 9:55 am

Delivery? Carrots in Tupperware? Don’t lose the lid Mr. GH!

  6. Gigi_the cat lady July 20, 2016 / 7:04 pm

One day years ago, my husband and I were having burgers and fries at a picnic table in a park. Suddenly I felt scratching on my leg, I was so used to having one of my cats do that to me that my reaction was simply to look down. Imagine my surprise when I saw a groundhog looking up at me! Needless to say I gave him a couple of fries and he waddled away happy.

    • Murray C. July 20, 2016 / 8:13 pm

GiGi, that is pretty darned adorable. I love that he didn’t pester you for more. What a well-behaved little guy.

  7. fkaWaldenPond July 20, 2016 / 8:11 pm

Rolodex peeps! An awesome Rolodex!!! 😀

  8. murkle46 July 21, 2016 / 6:55 am

Fun fact.Carrots had to be bred for their orange color.Originally they were purple, sometimes white or yellow, and not very tasty.

  9. murkle46 July 21, 2016 / 6:58 am

The fun thing about card catalogues is randomly picking a drawer and then a card, and reading what came up.

  10. Smartypants July 21, 2016 / 9:12 am

Mike, I love your text for this! I hadn’t even thought of a “Groundhog Day” theme.
