That’s a good friend to have. I wonder if in the days of corsets ladies would do that for each other.

That’s why they had ladies’ maids.

Yep, they learn from watching humans. Our pony learned, unfortunately, to open the gate to her pasture, open the door to the shed where her food was kept, turn on the outdoor faucet (though she never turned it off–our parents yelled at us for leaving the water running until someone finally caught her in the act), and unzip my dad’s jacket (where he stashed carrots).

You reminded me of a story from when I was a kid. We got a Miniature Schnauzer when I was five, and my parents borrowed a cage from my aunt and uncle, who had a German Shepherd, so it was much bigger than was necessary for our tiny puppy. The cage was all metal and the door slid up and over the top like a garage door, and they put it in the kitchen near the door to the basement, which was our TV room at the time. The dog would try to escape by pushing the door up, but she was too small to open it all the way, so it would slide back down before she could get out. Which didn’t stop her from trying.

One morning shortly after we got her, my dad got up and heard the TV on downstairs, and asked who left it on; of course no one claimed responsibility, so he was annoyed (never mind that my brother was 7 and I was 5 so we went to bed long before my parents, so it would have had to be one of them). It happened a few days in a row before he finally figured out what was happening – the metal bars rubbing together as the dog repeatedly opened and closed the cage door was generating the right frequency to turn on the TV. He tied the cage closed the next night, and the TV stayed off.

I love it when kids get blamed for pet shenanigans.

I’m imaging this dialog from the darker colored horse: “Carl, pull it the other way…wait what are you doing Carl, I said pull the other way…ouch Carl stop it you are actually tightening this thing up…yes that’s it Carl, pull that way…keep pulling Carl, we’re almost there….whew it’s finally off, thanks Carl.”

The name Carl always makes me think of Llamas with Hats.
