I did not know bats could swim! I mean, why would they need to..?

    • Gigi the cat lady August 5, 2016 / 1:17 pm

I know! Some bats sleep in trees and some trees overhang water so they could fall in if the lose the grip. Maybe he was startled awake after a nightmare of having a human’s head of hair stuck in his claws ?

      • allein ? August 5, 2016 / 1:18 pm

Aw! Now I haz a sad!

Bats with nightmares need teddy bears.

      • Murray C. August 5, 2016 / 2:13 pm

I love how casually he’s swimming – obviously not terrorized at the prospect. I do love the idea of his being terrorized by human hair in his claws! So many people are freaked out by the idea of bats getting in their hair. Does that even happen?

        • debg August 5, 2016 / 2:23 pm

I am one of the freakees, people. And I have very short hair. Just can’t bear bats, but I try to support all of you who people who love them.

          • Murray C. August 5, 2016 / 4:08 pm

Think of them as small dogs with wings.

            • debg August 5, 2016 / 4:36 pm

I can’t help but think of them as rodents with wings, and that makes it WORSE. (I can enjoy people’s pix of their pet rats and mice but cannot imagine owning them myself.)

              • Murray C. August 5, 2016 / 4:54 pm

No one will hold it against you, DEBG, no worries. There was a time I was afraid of all sorts of things, then I had a boyfriend who photographed insects and we’d go out into fields and search for them. Turned out I was good at finding them and the experience turned my head around about all kinds of critters that I had previously deemed yucky.

              • 6rabbits August 5, 2016 / 6:51 pm

                FYI bats aren’t rodents.

                • debg August 6, 2016 / 11:29 am

I know, but I can never remember what they really are.

                  • allein ? August 6, 2016 / 11:46 am

They are of the order Chiroptera, which is the second largest order, after rodents.

Science is still baffled by what 4-legged mammal bats evolved from, possibly because it happened very fast, in an evolutionary sense. Will post link to article, if anyone is interested, when I find it again.

DEBG, I understand people being leary of bats; there are too many myths and “false facts” out there. That’s why I make it a point to educate my students about the importance of bats to our ecosystem. I do a survey of how they FEEL about bats before and after our study, ☚ī¸??, and 90% are in the ? category afterwards. My goal is _understanding_ bats, even if they are still freaked out by them.

                    • murkle46 August 6, 2016 / 1:18 pm

Im getting an unsupported protocol error for the link?

                    • 6rabbits August 6, 2016 / 1:31 pm

Hmmm…I just tried it and it went thru. Try batconservation.org then navigate to the evolution page?

            • Faye August 6, 2016 / 2:11 pm

Me too. Flying doggies. Furries with wings.

          • Smartypants August 5, 2016 / 9:20 pm

DebG, I can totally sympathize – I love bats, but I used to have a terrible phobia of spiders. It’s very kind of you to support us ‘batties’.

            • debg August 6, 2016 / 11:30 am

And weirdly, I don’t mind spiders, perhaps because I’m a handspinner. Unless the spiders are REALLY big.

        • 6rabbits August 5, 2016 / 7:04 pm

Bats’ echolocation could find, and avoid, a single hair waving in space. Bats fly in a swooping pattern, like if you drew waves. When they are trapped inside a house, our ceilings are too low. So freaked out people see the swoop down as an attack and cover their head. In a very small space with distressed human AND bat, anything could happen. The bat in the video is a flying fox and they don’t live in North America. Bats in NA are v e r y s m a l l.

          • Murray C. August 5, 2016 / 8:06 pm

I posted a while back that I was visited by a bat one night while sleeping – I woke up to a breeze across my face. In my groggy state I thought bat, that was logical, then “oh, no, suppose it’s a bird, it’ll poop all over my work” (I had a drawing table nearby in my very small living quarters.) I put on the lights and watched it for a while and was so amazed how it managed to avoid everything in it’s way – places where the clearance was less than a foot! Then I turned off the lights, opened the door and out it went. It was a terrific experience.

            • 6rabbits August 5, 2016 / 8:20 pm

I’m jealous! I had a red bat in my tree one summer, but no close encounters. I would love to put up a bat house, but I will have to get approval from HOA.

            • Smartypants August 5, 2016 / 9:34 pm

Aren’t they amazing? I was able to help one a few years ago – I was at the bank at lunchtime and the bat must have been sleeping inside the other building; some workers went in and he came flying out into the sunlight just flapping like mad, totally disoriented, and plopped down in the middle of the parking lot. If I hadn’t actually seen him flying, he would have just looked like a leaf or a bit of trash.

So I got an old towel (I always keep a couple in my car for things like this) and nabbed him and put him in the shrubbery where he could hang out safely until dark.

              • Murray C. August 5, 2016 / 9:41 pm

                Bravo, Smartypants!???

                • fkaWaldenPond August 5, 2016 / 11:40 pm

Hear! hear! (and I like how you have a towel in the car should you ever come upon a hapless bat.)

              • Sowmya August 5, 2016 / 11:57 pm

You are obviously a hoopy frood who knows where your towel is at!

            • debg August 6, 2016 / 11:30 am

              Like a flying roomba.

  2. Flowerfanatic August 5, 2016 / 12:56 pm

Where’s the dip net??? I wanna save this poor creature. Wish we knew the outcome of this. Some YouTube commenters were saying just about the same thing.

    • Not That Mike The Other Mike August 5, 2016 / 1:01 pm

Considering that bat wings are the equivalent of arms and fingers, with a claw at the top of each wing, it should be able to swim to shore and crawl onto land, same as other animals.

    • 6rabbits August 5, 2016 / 7:12 pm

There was another video that showed a microbat getting out of the water, shaking himself off, and walking to a rock to dry off. There are 3 types of fishing bats who swim. Many mammals CAN swim, even if it’s not a regular thing they do.?

  3. Gigi the cat lady August 5, 2016 / 1:15 pm

Batty does not seem to be in distress and he looks like a strong swimmer so unless he is very far from the shore he should be OK.

  4. murkle46 August 5, 2016 / 1:36 pm

.Maybe he fell into the water one time before this, and found he really enjoyed swimming. He looks relaxed, and comfortable in the water.Bat wings seem really efficient for swimming.

    • Phred's Mom August 5, 2016 / 2:17 pm

Using that logic, I should be an excellent swimmer. I’ m not.??

      • Murray C. August 5, 2016 / 4:07 pm

You trying to say you’re batty?????

  5. Faye August 5, 2016 / 2:41 pm

    Bat stroke. Nice form. 9.9
The feetsies in the back kilt me ded!
    Stately creature.

  6. jerzowa August 5, 2016 / 2:54 pm

In Polish, this swimming style is called “little frog” 🙂

    • Murray C. August 5, 2016 / 4:12 pm

?cute! Jerzowa, I’m half Polish! But my father’s Irishness somehow trumped my mother’s Polishness, I think partly because my mother wasn’t too much of a cook and didn’t make the Polish specialties – her sister did! Yum.

      • jerzowa August 5, 2016 / 6:02 pm

        🙂

  7. sugitomo August 5, 2016 / 7:05 pm

Nice form! Someone get Mr. Batty to the Rio Olympics, STAT!

  8. 6rabbits August 5, 2016 / 7:14 pm

Does anyone know what language the observers are speaking?

    • Gigi the cat lady August 5, 2016 / 7:39 pm

According to youtube, the video was taken at Rock garden, Chandigarh in India so I suppose the people a speaking Hindi or one of the other language of India.

      • 6rabbits August 5, 2016 / 8:22 pm

        Yea! That was my guess!?
(I saw it on The Dodo, not You Tube.)

  9. burvegas August 5, 2016 / 9:43 pm

Now I’m imagining a lovestruck, very confused manta-type critter seeing this bat…

  10. Blakeney August 6, 2016 / 10:49 am

I saw this on YouTube and was also hoping little batty made it to shore ok.

About bats in hair – I don’t think they get caught in peoples hair, though there is one little batty at BatWorld sanctuary that apparently likes to ride abound on volunteers heads: https://batworld.org/peekaboo/
