It’s World Elephant Day!

Let’s be celebrants for the elephants
Nature’s most loyal, loving friend
With memories that never end
Admire their floppy ears and trunks
Protect them from those poaching punks
And keep their homelands safe and pure
So these proud families can endure.

    Eletelephony by
    Laura Elizabeth Richards

    Once there was an elephant,
Who tried to use the telephant—
No! No! I mean an elephone
Who tried to use the telephone—
(Dear me! I am not certain quite
That even now I’ve got it right.)
Howe’er it was, he got his trunk
    Entangled in the telephunk;
The more he tried to get it free,
    The louder buzzed the telephee—
(I fear I’d better drop the song
    Of elephop and telephong!)

That was one of my favorite poems when I was little! It still makes me chortle.

Being raised in French, I didn’t know this poem, what a fun little piece, thanks for sharing.

What a lovely, funny piece of poetry! Thanks for introducing me to it, Sumo-Mermaid. In Polish,we have an equally beautiful gem of words by Julian Tuwim, about a grown-up elephant who suffers from awful case of forgetfulness ?. I have no idea whether the poem has been translated into English though…

    Wonderful poem, Mike.

I love the jaunty crossover step on the first bebeh trunkster.

      Love the poem!
Does anyone else think elephants–esp. the young ones–look like they are wearing those footed pjs babies/toddlers wear?

Second picture looks like a still from my favorite elephant video!

The enjoyment of the videographers is a plus, too?

Oh – the foot stamping! And he hasn’t quite learned how to work his trunk. Too cute!
