High-Flying Giraffe

Last year, The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, famous for rescuing orphan elephants in Kenya, stuck its neck out to rescue an orphan giraffe. The brave giraffe never panicked but rather seemed to find the entire experience fascinating, even the airplane ride.

I hope he got those honey-roasted peanuts, Laura H.

    Aw, sweet giraffe!

Hey Mike, did you change something with the comments? I had to clear my cookies earlier, but I’ve commented since then. I didn’t used to have to enter my name and email every time I comment; I reentered it after I cleared the cookies but now it keeps forgetting me once I leave the page..?

    • Murray C. September 28, 2016 / 1:42 pm

“cleared your cookies” – I hope it didn’t hurt.

      • allein ? September 28, 2016 / 2:03 pm

        lol…no, but now I’m starving!

Reminds me of those questions – “If you were an animal, what would you be?” or “What flavor are the cookies in your online tracking?”

oooohhhh so sweet. Reminds me of an very large puppy and so trusting too. I love the Sheldrick Trust, they do absolutely amazing work with the animals in Africa. I think that’s one place I need to put on my bucket list to see in the near future.

    • Laura September 28, 2016 / 2:17 pm

They’re not just on my bucket list, they’re on my annual donation list. There are so many wonderful places worthy of support, but this one is right up there at the top. I am so glad I “adopted” a baby elephant last year so that I got on their regular mailing list and get all these wonderful stories and videos from them!

And the animals seem to understand that these men in the green coats are their friends for life from the first time they meet them. They must just have an aura of love and gentleness surrounding them that the babies can sense.

      • Julie September 28, 2016 / 4:27 pm

        Agreed!

I wonder what the interview process is like to become a “Green Coat”? Do you have to walk into an animal pen and if the animals naturally gravitate towards you, you get the job?

Dear as can be – and tiny heffalumps in blankets!

Mike, I was having an issue where the post wouldn’t completely load and safari said it couldn’t because of too many “redirects” – any idea what that means?

    • Laura September 28, 2016 / 2:14 pm

That means it was jumping around through too many different server locations before arriving at your computer. Most websites have a limit of the number of jumps a packet is allowed to take — if I recall correctly what my husband the lifelong computer guy told me, it’s usually up in the 30s, so it’s a whole bunch — but sometimes, if one server on the normal route isn’t functioning, something gets routed through an alternate route, say via Alpha Centauri (like the email that takes hours to arrive), and then gets rejected for stopping to see too many sights along the way. That’s my totally second-hand, fuzzily remembered, explanation for what I was told a couple years or so ago. 🙂

      • allein ? September 28, 2016 / 2:34 pm

        I like your explanation.

That’s actually why I cleared my cookies earlier; I thought it was just me and Chrome suggested trying that. Didn’t work (obviously).

      • Gigi the cat lady September 28, 2016 / 2:56 pm

Thanks Laura. Finally an explanation I can understand ?

      • Murray C. September 28, 2016 / 5:54 pm

Thanks, Laura, that’s a great way for the visual person to understand what’s happening.

Thanks, Mike. I also meant to ask about the post that went nowhere with the cat and the puzzle pieces?????

        • Not That Mike The Other Mike September 28, 2016 / 5:43 pm

Regarding the cat and puzzle pieces, I pressed the “Publish” button too early, before I had written anything, and when I do that, the email notification gets sent and there’s no way for me to stop it. So I unpublished the unfinished post, which is why you saw nothing. Sorry.

          • Murray C. September 28, 2016 / 5:45 pm

S’okay, just wondering. I know it’s happened before and for a similar reason, but I’m never sure and I don’t want to miss a thing!!!! No apologies needed.

        • Gigi the cat lady September 28, 2016 / 5:44 pm

Did you see that too? I thought I had imagined it!

          • Laura September 28, 2016 / 7:05 pm

So did I. I was very disappointed when I realized it was a Mike boo-boo.

            • allein ? September 28, 2016 / 7:08 pm

Just gives us something to look forward to. 🙂

Yes, think of it as a “preview of coming attractions” 😀

  4. allein ? September 28, 2016 / 1:41 pm

So…if he flew first class, did he get pajamas?

(This was from a jeopardy question last night.)

  5. Birdcage September 28, 2016 / 1:51 pm

When I daydream, that’s rather how I imagine my life: being wrapped in blankets with my head sticking out, having four minions carry my blanket-wrapped self around, my own plane to fly me places, heffalump friends with their own blankets, noms-in-baby-bottles, respectful paparazzi and adoring fans, endless safari lifestyle, a wealthy benefactor.

Minus the orphaned-at-too-young-an-age, and being bedeviled by animal/human conflicts.

    • Gigi the cat lady September 28, 2016 / 2:54 pm

Do you have a spare blanket for me? Your daydream sounds like something I would enjoy very much.

      • Birdcage September 28, 2016 / 3:21 pm

Ample blankets to go around. But I’m short on carrying-minions so you might have to arrange your own. Happy to share my plane, noms, paparazzi etc.

    • DebG September 28, 2016 / 3:21 pm

      What Gigi said.

      • Birdcage September 28, 2016 / 3:23 pm

Come join! I’m building a world away from bedevilment and the more, the merrier!!!

        • Skimpy September 28, 2016 / 4:37 pm

Can I come? I’ll bring my minions.

          • Murray C. September 28, 2016 / 5:43 pm

            ?

        • Duckie ? September 28, 2016 / 4:48 pm

Is there room for a Duckie?

        • Birdcage September 28, 2016 / 4:57 pm

All are welcome in my daydream.

          • Murray C. September 28, 2016 / 5:42 pm

How generous of you – I’m hoppin’ on board, too!

  6. Juno September 28, 2016 / 4:11 pm

He’s so very chill–I love him! And I don’t think I ever knew that giraffes pace (move both right legs together and both left legs together). I knew camels did, but not giraffes. Now I’m curious what other animals pace (naturally–not only when trained, like horses). Off to google . . . .

  7. Duckie ? September 28, 2016 / 7:50 pm

Mike, I see what you did there: “stuck their necks out”.
Adorable baby giraffe, neck and all.

  8. fkaWaldenPond September 28, 2016 / 9:49 pm

Anybody else having a crap week? ugghhhh and sigh. Going to hit the hay as it is better than poking around here being a grump!

    • Debg September 29, 2016 / 12:59 am

Yes. Sadly, yes. Hugs to you, and may our respective weeks improve.

  9. allein ? September 29, 2016 / 12:53 am

And Stripes just got out…in the dark and rain and kinda windy…

    And there’s a skunk out there…

    ???

    • allein ? September 29, 2016 / 1:50 am

Got him back. Caught his eyes in my flashlight at the next door neighbor’s. Then he went under our bushes on the side of the house, then worked his way around the front and finally came out. When I picked him up he hissed which he doesn’t really do (I didn’t have a good grip on him, though)…so now I have this vague worry that I caught the wrong cat…which I know is silly but there ya go. (Pretty sure he and Stars would have freaked out at each other if they were strangers.)

He smells vaguely like skunk but not so strong that I think he actually got sprayed. Probably just picked it up from the air and wet, I think.

Now I’m kinda rambling just to reassure myself. I should go to bed.

      • Juno September 29, 2016 / 11:33 am

It’s amazing how fast even the tamest indoor cat can turn at least a little wild when he gets outside.

        • allein ? September 29, 2016 / 11:40 am

So I went to bed and locked them both out of the room. He tried twice to get in.
I hope the skunky scent faded once he dried.

Hi guys, thank you. night all!
