Sticking with Democracy

Shout-out to Chase for starting a new recurring tip. “About time too,” she writes, “since your site has replaced CO as the first thing I check when I get on my computer everyday!” Thanks to you and to all the subscribers for sticking with me.

And speaking of sticking (see what I did there?), “I Voted” stickers are popping up everywhere as early voting gets underway in many states. Reader James D. writes: “My cat Dottie made it on Cute Overload in 2014 with this video:”

And now it’s 2016, and Dottie’s still stuck on her sticker. Wear it proudly, Dottie!

You already voted!

I love the pussycat’s facial markings. Reminds me of those math questions (forget what they’re called) 1/2 is to 4 as 3/8 is to???? Or, maybe just part of a checkerboard.

    • AB October 25, 2016 / 10:31 am

      Proportions or ratios.

      • Murray C. October 25, 2016 / 5:55 pm

Thanks, AB – I think I was thinking ratios. Ah, the aging brain.

  2. Claire October 24, 2016 / 2:56 pm

Good work, Dottie! I’m also protective of my voting stickers! In Ohio we have pretty great ones, in my opinion:

  3. JenDeyan October 24, 2016 / 3:13 pm

I recognize that sticker! I’m going to have one soon. Going in for early voting this week.

  4. Laura October 24, 2016 / 3:35 pm

I voted by mail, and I have a nice “I VOTED/by mail/I made freedom count” sticker that came in the envelope with my ballot! I complained to my husband that I didn’t want to vote by mail because I wouldn’t get a sticker, and he promptly pulled his out and showed me that I would, so what the heck, I have voted now. I was good to get it over and done, after the torturesome length of this campaign!!!

    • allein ? October 24, 2016 / 4:04 pm

      I don’t think I’ve ever gotten a sticker for voting. 🙁

  5. Gigi the cat lady October 24, 2016 / 3:59 pm

Happily we won’t have to suffer election in Québec until 2018 and for the federal election it won’t be until 2019. Of course ours don’t last as long as yours, they are over in a matter of weeks, the last one in 2015 was one of the longest at 11 weeks.

  6. Phred's Mom October 24, 2016 / 4:06 pm

The campaign process in the US is unconscionably long,
stultifying and, except for this go-round, boring. There
should be a limit of, say, six-eight weeks to get it all said and
done. Dottie should be a poll watcher, folks would turn out
    in droves.

  7. Arne October 24, 2016 / 4:07 pm

Many people are saying that video is rigged.

    • Brouhaha October 24, 2016 / 4:13 pm

Believe me, bad hombres everywhere rigging everything. It’s tremendous.

      • DebG October 24, 2016 / 4:17 pm

Voter fraud! Is this cat a citizen!?>??? Are we sure she’s not impersonating some famous cat, like Grumpy Cat or Lil Bub? Was she even born in the US?????!/1 1 1 1 1 1??????

        • DebG October 24, 2016 / 4:17 pm

Oh, AND I suspect she’s a nasty woman.

I just had to get that out of my system.

          • Faye October 24, 2016 / 4:32 pm

How many times did she vote? At least she’s a living voter.

            Beautiful kitty! I’m with her!

            • allein ? October 24, 2016 / 4:52 pm

Can I send her as my proxy voter?

At least this time I get to go to iPlay America with its giant parking lot instead of the firehouse that barely fits 8 cars.

          • Smartypants October 24, 2016 / 5:25 pm

            I hear there’s already a “Nasty Woman” T-shirt… 😀

            • Faye October 24, 2016 / 9:45 pm

              Want.

            • allein ? October 24, 2016 / 9:50 pm

There’s a few of them. My favorites:

              • fkaWaldenPond October 24, 2016 / 10:25 pm

Thank you Mike! This looks like it could/ should be a painting. It even captures the moment when his wife realizes.
A couple of my fb acquaintances worked press there that night who had slogged through it years previously and they noted that never in there time had they seen ANY GUEST, let alone Gop so SHUNNED.

                • Faye October 24, 2016 / 11:01 pm

                  Wow! Can’t rig that.

                  • Faye October 24, 2016 / 11:50 pm

                    Thank you.

                  • fkaWaldenPond October 25, 2016 / 9:54 am

Ohhh thank you, I will have a gander tonight at home.

      • Phred's Mom October 25, 2016 / 10:01 am

        Yuge, even.
But let’s not get political here,
it has been a place of retreat
from all the crepe being tossed
        around from ALL sides.

        • Murray C. October 25, 2016 / 10:36 am

Oh, I concur, Phred’s Mom – much needed respite here.

          • Phred's Mom October 25, 2016 / 10:45 am

Thanks, Murray. Have one for me.
            I’m an Independent.
            I believe the voting booth
            should be even more private
            than the confessional. Only
            you and your conscience.
And, like a lot of religious beliefs,
no two people will share identical
            concepts.
No more from me on this. Only
cute stuff gets my attention. And
maybe dark chocolate, truth be told.
            And Guinness.

            • Allu October 25, 2016 / 4:13 pm

May I add this? Yes, Phred’s Mom, I was raised that way, too. Now I have altered my thinking. Not necessary about this election, but when I started seeing signs in our neighborhood before some election, opinions of which were totally opposite of mine, I found a sign, put it out thinking: Not everybody here thinks like that!

  8. Madame X October 24, 2016 / 5:02 pm

Wear it proudly, Dottie! Too many fine people have suffered and died that we may exercise that sacred right.

    Vote!

  9. Not That Mike The Other Mike October 24, 2016 / 5:06 pm

Really? This post has been up for hours and nobody has made the most obvious comment? Well, I guess it’s up to me, so… (clears throat)

    No…

        • allein ? October 24, 2016 / 5:08 pm

How’d you make such big letters?!

          • Not That Mike The Other Mike October 24, 2016 / 5:13 pm

By enclosing my text in <span> tags and adding a style attribute to change font size. The values I used were “larger” “x-large” and “xx-large”. (I could have used numerical values instead.) For example, to output the large “STICKY!” I typed:

            <span style=”font-size:xx-large”>STICKY!</span>

            • Murray C. October 24, 2016 / 8:34 pm

What does that MEAN???? You mean to say some of you actually understand that bit of alphabet soup? I am gobsmacked. And dumb, I guess.

              • Not That Mike The Other Mike October 24, 2016 / 8:39 pm

Not dumb, just not used to the underlying system that governs typography and design on websites. You’re not alone, I promise. I’ve been doing this sort of work since 1995, so it’s second nature. And I apologize if my answer to your question was too technical. I forget myself sometimes.

                • allein ? October 24, 2016 / 9:02 pm

I’m somewhat familiar with tags. I know how to do italics, bold, underline, strikethrough, and

                  blockquote

. But I’ve never used the span tag.

Edit: Okay, apparently underline doesn’t work here… it works on the disqus system.

        • Gigi the cat lady October 24, 2016 / 5:19 pm

          DUH! (face palm)

        • Tina M October 24, 2016 / 8:07 pm

          LMAO! ??

  10. Paul Phillips October 24, 2016 / 5:10 pm

My cat hates stickies, she really doesn’t like them.

  11. Faye October 24, 2016 / 5:59 pm

Mike, I got scared when you said you had to say it: no grabby the…

    Phew!

    • fkaWaldenPond October 24, 2016 / 7:26 pm

    • Murray C. October 24, 2016 / 8:39 pm

      Good one, Faye!

    • Julie October 24, 2016 / 8:54 pm

      HILARIOUS!!!!

      • Faye October 24, 2016 / 9:48 pm

  12. Mal October 24, 2016 / 7:04 pm

It’s funnier if you put the stickers on the bottom of the kitty’s paws and then watch him or her do the Shakn’ It Cha-cha.

OK, I’m evil. Plus, it’s really best if you have 4 stickers, one for each paw, and that means voting 4 times. Which I think is only allowed in Chicago and Louisiana.

    • Ricky's Mom October 24, 2016 / 7:16 pm

      Ha!

    • Murray C. October 25, 2016 / 8:44 am

I remember once on a Christmas day, wrapping everywhere, and my cat came flying through the room, screeching – with a curly paper bow stuck to her arse.

      • allein ? October 25, 2016 / 8:49 am

We always toss the wrappings in a pile for the cats to play with. Stars ignores it and Stripes usually gets bored quickly, but sometimes a ribbon will catch his fancy and he’ll play with that for a while.

        • Haha October 25, 2016 / 7:58 pm

We could only wrap any gifts. My cat would eat the ribbon, not be able to digest it, then bring it back up. What a “nice” present.
We tried to find fun and exciting paper.

          • allein ? October 25, 2016 / 8:20 pm

I rarely bother with ribbon but that’s just cuz I’m lazy.

  13. Circe October 24, 2016 / 7:11 pm

What a beautiful kitteh! It’s like she couldn’t decide whether to be a calico or a tortoise shell, so she’s a patchwork!

    • James Dewey October 25, 2016 / 4:47 pm

Aw, my Dottie submission made it!

Her checkerboard face has elicited many reactions, but my favorite of all time is: “That’s a very heraldic face: it can be blazoned Quarterly or and sable!”

Edit: that wasn’t meant as a reply to you specifically, but sure, why not!

      • Faye October 25, 2016 / 7:15 pm

I love her centered chest marking. Very eye catching.

        • James Dewey October 25, 2016 / 7:41 pm

          Ah, the little bib?

In case it’s not obvious from that and the two videos, she really loves that cat tower.

  14. Doug October 25, 2016 / 7:44 am

Please .. Keep your Chads to yourself !

    • allein ? October 25, 2016 / 8:24 am

Hey, leave my cousin Chad out of this!

      • Doug October 25, 2016 / 8:27 am

You need to keep him on a leash please .. He’s getting out of control !

        *Snickers*

        • allein ? October 25, 2016 / 8:34 am

It’s all that Irish rock ‘n roll music he plays.

(True story – he plays bass in a band.)

        • Murray C. October 25, 2016 / 8:41 am

Oh, hang Chad – and what do Snickers have to do with it!!!?

          • allein ? October 25, 2016 / 8:43 am

No, he’s vegan; he wouldn’t eat a Snickers.

          • Phred's Mom October 25, 2016 / 9:56 am

            Happy happy birthday, Murray!!
            ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?

            • Murray C. October 25, 2016 / 10:33 am

Thank you! Going to lunch with a couple of friends today. My husband is very involved with a regatta that is always this time of the year – The Head of the Schuylkill – he was director for 30 years, longer than we’ve been married. So my birthday kinda gets lost in the shuffle, so we won’t be doing anything ’til Sunday but that’s fine, it just prolongs it!

              • Phred's Mom October 25, 2016 / 10:50 am

                Good, enjoy it all.

              • allein ? October 25, 2016 / 11:31 am

                Happy birthday!
                ??????????

              • fkaWaldenPond October 25, 2016 / 12:25 pm

Hey Murray C. Happy Birthday! You are one cool cat. 🙂

                • Murray C. October 25, 2016 / 5:00 pm

Thanks, everybody, it’s turning out to be lots of fun. I’m going out tonight to an Irish session, maybe get to sing a song or two, drink a little wine – nice time.

                  Cool Cat, huh??

                  • fkaWaldenPond October 25, 2016 / 8:16 pm

                    Slainte! Murray C.!

  15. Chase October 27, 2016 / 10:43 pm

My pleasure Mike!! Hopefully someday my pocket flow will enable me to offer more. Thanks for all you do!
