By George, He’s Adorable

Meet George, a baby wombat currently at the Australian Reptile Park. Found lost and abandoned, he’s now under the care of wildlife conservationist Tim Faulkner.

Faulkner hopes to return George to the wild when he’s big enough, but for now he’s George’s new mommy, responsible for the all-important meelks!

And he’s all ready for Christmas!

  2. Duckie ? November 30, 2016 / 11:29 am

Well, there goes any chance of me getting anything done today. I’m just going to stare at that little baby cuddled up to that boot, and turn into a puddle of maternal goo.

      Ack! It’s not a picture, it’s a video!
Now I’m useless for the rest of the year!

      • allein ? November 30, 2016 / 11:41 am

Thank you for pointing that out. On my work computer, I don’t even see the space where the video should be. I only see the bottom picture in the red, white, and green pouch. Your comment sent me to my tablet where I can see the video.

He looks so teeny next to the boots. 🙂

Had to wait to see video til I got home, but totally worth it! Just sooo cute!

  3. sumomermaid November 30, 2016 / 11:47 am

In the picture, not the video, the path above his head looks a bit like some crazy haircut.

    • Duckie ? November 30, 2016 / 12:07 pm

      Wombat troll.

      • allein ? November 30, 2016 / 12:16 pm

Much cuter than the trolls I encounter in my other usual internet hangout…

That’s it!! I’m moving to Australia and getting a job with animals. Between yesterday’s video of bottle feeding kangas and today with being mommy to a wombat, my job is looks boring in comparison. And oh yeah, giving kisses to said kangas. What a life!!!!

    • Starfish November 30, 2016 / 2:25 pm

I’d hop on the first flight down if I could. Talk about a dream job!

  5. Faye November 30, 2016 / 12:04 pm

George is short in height but big on cute! Nice ankles on pop.

  6. Gigi the cat lady November 30, 2016 / 12:09 pm

I will name him George, and I will hug him and pet him and squeeze him …

  7. Stressfactor November 30, 2016 / 12:12 pm

No fair! I want to give wombat skritichies and belly rubs!

Thanks also to Murray C. for sending this in! (I knew there was at least one other. My notes are a mess today.)

Update: Thanks also to Elizabeth W.! (See? Total mess.)

Holy moly, he IS adorable! (And, so is the little wombat….:)

    • debg November 30, 2016 / 8:40 pm

That’s what I thought too! I’ll take one of each, please.

  10. Murray C. November 30, 2016 / 2:19 pm

I love watching George climb down the steps. And I’ll bet he’s giggling like that fox as his tummy is being scritched! (He’s so happy he could….wait for it!!…. OK, all together now- INCUBATE A SPRINKLER!)

When I watch videos like this it makes me wish I could go back 25 years and choose a different career path.

I keep having to remind myself that a job like this probably involves A LOT of wombat POOP and PEE and VOMIT, not shown in such lovely videos.

    “…wombat poop…wombat poop…wombat poop…”

      • Julie November 30, 2016 / 3:55 pm

Well, Mike, you have now made wombat poop a job perk, because let’s face it, any poop that comes out in cubes is a biological wonder.

Should be part of the Seven Wonders of the Natural World, in my humble opinion!

        • Murray C. November 30, 2016 / 4:21 pm

Agreed -! I mean, it’s an extrusion process and you’d think it would do so in the easiest manner possible! It is a wonder, indeed. And I LOVE it! Just the crafting possibilities are extraordinary!?

          • Julie November 30, 2016 / 6:04 pm

Murray C – I can’t get my head around the “how?” or the “why?”…

            • Murray C. November 30, 2016 / 6:10 pm

The why, according the blurb was so it wouldn’t roll off of surfaces the animal was marking. The how, well, I wonder if anyone’s done a study on the backend of a wombat? I mean, the mind boggles – I keep thinking “cookie press”.

And why do I love this site? Where else would people go off on a riff about wombat poop. We go where others fear to travel.

              • debg November 30, 2016 / 8:40 pm

Murray C., you’ve got me chortling and it will probably last all evening.

      • Duckie ? November 30, 2016 / 4:19 pm

Why do I have this uneasy feeling that our esteemed leader had a bet on with someone, that he could cause X number of people to divert to a website featuring wombat poop?

        • Julie November 30, 2016 / 6:02 pm

Duckie – I did think it was odd that Mike was able to so quickly bring up the square poop. 🙂

  12. Faye November 30, 2016 / 9:37 pm

Cube shaped poop. Does that mean the opening of the extruder is, ummm, square? How else would that work? Is this a big subject in biomechanics?

    • Andrew November 30, 2016 / 10:02 pm

Makes me think of this Arthur clip XD

    • Murray C. November 30, 2016 / 10:17 pm

When I was small a Circus came to our town a half a block away from our house. I was particularly taken with the elephants and was fascinated to see that their poops were like round loaves of bread, curved on top and flat on the bottom. Little did I realize until MUCH later in life that it was impact that created the flatness and that they didn’t actually come out that way. Imagine my disappointment.

    • fkaWaldenPond November 30, 2016 / 11:08 pm

I thought about this Faye and Murray C. and I am thinking wee wombats colon is kinda sausage linked but cube formation. Hence the cube poops. (?) Maybe lack of water, moisture too lends to more compact-ness.

      • Murray C. November 30, 2016 / 11:15 pm

It’s as good a theory as we’re gonna get, I think!

  13. 6rabbits December 1, 2016 / 12:44 am

Well, the poop is not a perfectly square cube–its sorta got rounded edges.? ( I learned about square wombat poop from a Magic Schoolbus book–“Expedition Down Under”.)

    • Murray C. December 1, 2016 / 9:39 am

Well, why didn’t you TELL us! ? And you’re right – it’s sort of a Rollo – which would be a great name for a wombat.

      • Duckie ? December 1, 2016 / 5:53 pm

Murray, I was inclined to disagree with your candy choice as a describer for wombat poop. I thought it tended more towards a Tootsie roll. Then I took the piece of tootsie roll out of my mouth and felt a bit …uncomfortable.
And only because NOBODY has done it…
        ?

        • Murray C. December 1, 2016 / 6:22 pm

You’re probably right, Duckie – I don’t eat either one, so perhaps I’m not up on the details to the extent you are!!!?

Gah, how did I miss this? This is going to explode my brain for the weekend.
