Hop to it, Kids!

At the Kangaroo Sanctuary in Australia, joeys Grace and Penny get an important lesson from an unusual teacher. “I was teaching Grace and Penny to follow me (their mum). They are learning fast. It is important for baby kangaroos to follow their mum so they stay safe and don’t get lost.”

    Uh – ok. New plan.
After my internship with the wombats I’m going to be joey trainer.

According to my Cutetropolis calendar, it’s National Bird Day. I wasn’t sure how to celebrate the day (every day is bird day at Casa Birdcage), so I went a’google’ing and found this website: http://www.nationalbirdday.com/

Heya Birdcage, How is Merlin doing? And gosh-darn those baby roos in training are cute.

      • Birdcage January 5, 2017 / 12:27 pm

Merlin is recovering today from a “horror” that he had last night. Someone gave me one of those Korean “sheet masks” for Christmas – they are face-shaped sheets of soft fabric dampened with special moisturizers and such and you plaster one to your face (they have holes for your eyes and mouth) and you leave it for 20 minutes or so to have a bit of a home facial. Anyway, I put on the mask and then went into my rec room to watch a bit of TV and Merlin had a melt-down when he saw me. Admittedly, I looked like Hannibal Lecter or Mike Myers from the Halloween movies.

        • allein ? January 5, 2017 / 12:35 pm

          Aw, poor Merlin!

        • fkaWaldenPond January 5, 2017 / 2:55 pm

You could have practiced your Chinese Opera routine.

        • debg January 5, 2017 / 3:56 pm

I love those masks, but they do freak out my cats! Even the kitten masks!

          Ermagersh!

        • D B January 5, 2017 / 11:17 pm

Poor Merlin…. For national bird day my ringneck Sophia saw a turkey out the window and started screaming her loudest warning call, like “a velociraptor’s come to kill us! fly away! fly away!”

          • Smartypants January 6, 2017 / 7:32 am

Pfft! Oh dear…I can totally picture it!

    • allein ? January 5, 2017 / 11:44 am

Today we got an email about our “holiday” party which is generally held in February because we’re too busy at the holidays to shut the place down for 4 hours on a Friday. This year’s theme is “DC Rainforest” so there were a bunch of colorful rainforest birds on the announcement. Just a coincidence, I’m sure.

And some evil person brought in (most of) a chocolate layer cake that I’ve been successfully ignoring all morning, but then we just learned that the external audit folks are here today and they brought us a big box of warm, soft Philly pretzels, with mustard and cheese. I don’t eat the toppings, but I am munching a pretzel with some Hershey kisses. I am considering it part of my lunch. 🙂

      • Birdcage January 5, 2017 / 12:22 pm

Hey, our external auditors never bring us philly pretzels! *pouts*

        • allein ? January 5, 2017 / 12:34 pm

They do it every once in a while. They were here daily for a long-term project (like, over a year; they finished back around May) and would occasionally bring us treats. When the project finally went live they brought in ice cream cake. 🙂

And tomorrow is Cuddle Up Day. Hmmm, maybe I can go cuddle up with those two adorable joeys after they finish training???

      • allein ? January 5, 2017 / 12:35 pm

I will certainly not be cuddling with anyone here. Maybe I’ll print out my pay stub and cuddle that. 😛

      • Smartypants January 5, 2017 / 4:38 pm

I would have to divide my time between Brolga and the joeys.

Domestic life seems to agree with him – I recall early videos where his home was very, very austere – now he has a wife, a cozy home, AND the company of his marsupial children. Well done!

    • Murray C. January 5, 2017 / 1:19 pm

      Hoppy Bird Day to you…..

  5. Haha January 5, 2017 / 12:03 pm

That looks like many opportunities of fun training!
Do Roos have non skid pads on their feets? If I tried hopping like that on smooth wood floors, I would be slipping in a painful butt landing manner!

    • Faye January 5, 2017 / 1:37 pm

We need a picture of Joey toes.

      • allein ? January 5, 2017 / 1:41 pm

        😛

        • Smartypants January 5, 2017 / 4:20 pm

Whoa…so kangaroos are really just small, furry dinosaurs…?

        • Murray C. January 5, 2017 / 6:11 pm

          Joey Toes to the World!

          • tara January 5, 2017 / 7:50 pm

Allein, how? How do you find all of these!? Love your image commentary. 🙂

            • allein ? January 5, 2017 / 8:25 pm

I googled “kangaroo toes”….though to be honest, “baby kangaroo toes” didn’t get me any good pictures of feets, so this isn’t actually a joey.

              • tara January 5, 2017 / 8:45 pm

duh. Of course you googled. 🙂
                Thanks for the intrepid reporting!

        • Faye January 5, 2017 / 8:04 pm

I’m kinda sorry I asked. Yikes.

          • tara January 5, 2017 / 8:31 pm

I understand Faye, but those little ditties are apparently skid proof! Gotta be a perk.

        • Blue Footed Booby January 9, 2017 / 9:08 am

Huh, those digits are pretty unusual looking. It’s really interesting that their biggest toe is in the middle, rather than on the inside like…basically everything else.

  6. debg January 5, 2017 / 2:27 pm

Like Tara, I’m devising new post-retirement careers.

    Mike, how is Ani doing?

  7. Emsthemonster January 5, 2017 / 2:44 pm

How is Ani-bunny and Scorpius kitty?

    • Not That Mike The Other Mike January 5, 2017 / 2:54 pm

Ani is in great shape today. She’s eating like a little pig, all her bathroom habits are normal again, and she had plenty of energy to struggle with me as I gave her the last dose of pain medication this morning.

      • Smartypants January 5, 2017 / 3:04 pm

OMG, so glad to hear it! I’ve been v. concerned.

I know it’s been grueling for you – perhaps a nice dose of orange-flavored pain Rx for you too? 😀 You handled it really well.

        • Not That Mike The Other Mike January 5, 2017 / 3:54 pm

I got a few good whiffs of that pain medicine over the course of the last three days, and frankly I’d rather have pain than drink that stuff.

          • Ricky's Mom January 5, 2017 / 6:03 pm

Delighted to hear that Ani is back to normal! Mike, your next drink of whatever painkiller you like is on Ricky and me.

          • Murray C. January 5, 2017 / 6:10 pm

Yes, happy to hear Ani is doing so well. The stuff I’ve had to give my buns is banana flavored – not sure which would be worse. It’s all over-the-top sweet.

      • Emsthemonster January 5, 2017 / 3:18 pm

        yay, that’s great to hear!

      • Dubravkamcvmd January 5, 2017 / 3:52 pm

        What a relief!

      • JenDeyan January 5, 2017 / 7:15 pm

Hurray for Ani! You know it’s love when you’re happy that they are pooping. Give her a cuddle for me.

      • 6rabbits January 5, 2017 / 10:08 pm

I am soo happy Ani is back to normal and her feisty self! Such a relief when our babies are doing well.?

      • D B January 5, 2017 / 11:19 pm

Glad Ani’s well again! She sounds like such a character!

    • debg January 5, 2017 / 3:59 pm

Scorpius is doing really well, thanks. Imagine, if you will, a cat shut into my office, running behind every piece of big furniture he can, to avoid me. Finally he darted into the closet and I was able to pack him into the carrier.

He stayed in the bathroom last night because I can’t touch him otherwise. (Literally.) He ate, used the box, and generally glared at me from behind the toilet. This morning, the jail sentence ended and he was out the door in a flash. We’ll see if he comes into the bedroom this evening, or if I’ve irrevocably broken our fragile bond of trust.

      • fkaWaldenPond January 5, 2017 / 4:16 pm

Hey Debg, remind me, was Scorpious getting his hoochies done?

        • allein ? January 5, 2017 / 4:17 pm

I just nearly spit out my water.

        • Gigi the cat lady January 5, 2017 / 4:58 pm

Yes that would be a ouchie outie hoochies ?

      • Emsthemonster January 5, 2017 / 4:17 pm

Great news 🙂 The other cats will surely explain to him that he has a great loving home, no need to bear grudge!

        • debg January 5, 2017 / 5:23 pm

Scorp went in for hoochies and microchip. However, the other cats seem kind of pissed that he returned–I think they liked having him gone and then shut into the bathroom overnight. George is especially peeved.

Keep fingers crossed for a miracle: if Scorp can’t stop attacking the other cats, I will have to rehome him. He seems to love the indoor life, and he likes me even if I can’t touch him. But his “play” often crosses the line into aggression and it’s not cool.

          • Ricky's Mom January 5, 2017 / 6:05 pm

I’m glad Scorpius is back and healing. Fingers crossed for all where adjusting to a life of togetherness is concerned.

            • Murray C. January 5, 2017 / 6:09 pm

              Amen.

          • JenDeyan January 5, 2017 / 7:17 pm

Glad to hear Scorpius is back home. (I love that character, too). I hope he does settle down so you can have him in your home.

          • Smartypants January 5, 2017 / 8:39 pm

I wonder if his new non-hoochied state will help him to be less aggressive? Testosterone and all.

          • tara January 5, 2017 / 8:43 pm

Oh dear. This happens when I take only one of a The Two to the vet. Doesn’t matter which one. Whoever comes home gets hissed at like they are a demon. I think it’s just the vet smell.
As far as attacking goes… The Two had trouble getting along at first. When it seemed hopeless I got an industrial spray bottle from Home Depot. The thing shoots a hard stream 12 feet. If they went at it I could sneak attack and they’d stop. The trick was making sure they didn’t realize it was me. My peripheral vision got very good for a while. They both soon realized that any aggression was met with the nasty water stream. So a truce was called. Hope Scorpius gets the message!

            • 6rabbits January 5, 2017 / 10:10 pm

              Excellent and well-executed plan!

  8. debg January 5, 2017 / 4:00 pm

Thank goodness. I’ve been worried about poor Miss Bun (and you!).

  9. AJ January 5, 2017 / 6:41 pm

Good to hear about Ani and hope Scorpius comes around.

    • Faye January 5, 2017 / 8:07 pm

      Yes. Both fixed.
