Lip-Smacking Snacking

Back at the old ranch, there was a grudging acknowledgement that possums, although often creepy, could sometimes be cute. Folks, this is one of those rare occasions, because reader Faye just sent this video of possum babies enjoying a tray of yummy fruit. Speakers UP!

Okay, I admit it. These guys are pretty cute. But wait until they’re big enough to hiss at you in the dark–not so cute then!!!!

I guess I’m one of the rare people who thinks possums are cute be they babies or adults. Then again I’ve always been team “it’s so ugly it’s cute”.

      Absolutely!

I’ve always thought they were adorable – they hiss cause that’s all they got! And those little needly teeth, maybe, but I bet they’re more afraid of you than you are of them (THAT old maxim!)

I think baby possums are adorable.

Three of them get grapes and perform some synchronized nomming. Fabulous!

Why do I love the chomping/smacking sounds from open mouth chewing in animals and not people?

    • Amyliz January 24, 2017 / 7:20 pm

      Same here, Julie!

I agree with Gigi – they have a high BEF, those little grabby hands, and those little pink nosicles. I also really like their white face, grey body, dark grey/black arms/legs.

Reminds me of the Sears commercials from a few years ago for eyeglasses – lady calls to her cat outside, not wearing her glasses, possum walks in and she escorts it in, sweet talking “you want to cuddle with mama?” !

    *snort!*

    Oh, nevermind, it’s a raccoon!

      That is AWESOME!

      I love that commercial.

I knew someone who actually did this; one night she woke up and groggily saw her very fluffy grey tabby waiting outside at the sliding door, so she opened the door to let her cat in. Kitty started coming through the door, but then her dog, who’d followed her to the door, started barking and chased “kitty” back out. That’s when she woke up to the fact that she’d almost let in a large raccoon. What surprises me is that the raccoon could probably see the dog standing there on the other side of the glass and was coming in to check out the menu anyway, yikes.

I love the one in the middle row (behind the first three) with his little nose in the air. And all those white-tipped ears!

That one’s my fave, too! Well, and the one in the back, using his hands.

I like possums. They can be cute, sometimes they are ugly. They rarely carry rabies, so they are safer to have in your yard than raccoons. They eat mice before they creep into your house. Sure, they eat trash too, so make sure the dumpster is latched so they can’t get in.

I don’t know what it is about possom ears, but they look as if they’ve been stuck on as an afterthought.

They do look a bit put-together from different parts, and I imagine an encounter with an angry one on a dark night isn’t much fun, but these babies are adorable. When I was in elementary school our librarian was a wildlife rehabber and one year she had Posey the possum who grew up at school, going from baby to adult. I have a certain fondness for possums due to her. I rather like underappreciated animals (though I have to draw a line at spiders – outdoors? Please eat those bugs. Enjoy. Stay away from me. Indoors? NOPE.)

    Jug handle earsies!

The other night there was a good-sized possum just outside my apartment door, eating (I think) bird seed I had spilled when filling the feeder. Can’t say it was particularly cute, but I didn’t mind it being there! These babies are cuter than the big ones!

Mike, is that cuteoverload link supposed to work?

    • Amyliz January 24, 2017 / 7:18 pm

Worked for me a few minutes ago.

      • Arne January 24, 2017 / 7:48 pm

Now it does for me too but earlier I was constantly redirected to a generic site typical for expired domains.

        • Not That Mike The Other Mike January 24, 2017 / 8:11 pm

That’s odd that you’re seeing that now, but for a short time, the domain registration expired and that’s why you saw that generic page. The domain has since been renewed.

Over time human populations are pushing native animals out of their habitats. Only the ones who can adapt to human environments will survive. #Sad.

I wasn’t around for the CuteOverload back in ought 8 for the Great Possum Debate – but I was when Avocado showed up. She bowled me over with the cute.

How can you not love that smile?

I have always liked ‘possums and have had some interesting interactions with them, but it wasn’t until Avocado that I decided I like them very much and I’m not apologizing for it anymore doggonit!
