We had hyacinths in IL and squirrels would eat a lot of things there, but I don’t remember them imbibing on the hyacinths like this little fella is. Of course, we had ‘mountains’ of acorns so maybe there wasn’t a need for them to eat flowers.

I have an azalea bush in front of my home that produces red flowers about this time of year, and sometimes when I give my rabbit “outside time” she will eat a few of the flowers that fall to the ground.

If you have time, that might make a great pic.

This little fella had a smorgasbord of flowers available as part of the plantings in front of our building and was determined to eat as many of them as he possibly could. I have to admit I have never before or since seen a squirrel eat flowers. I’m going to see if it happens again once everything is in full bloom. I have a window next to my cube and generally keep my camera locked up in my overhead file cabinet.

Aw, poor little hungry critter. We feed squirrels to try to keep them away from more precious plants and it seems to work reasonably well. They do eat tulips. I’m concerned about our population because several of them have had either wounds or signs of mange, I can’t tell which, and I’m wondering what I can do if anything.

I work on a college campus so these guys do not go hungry. We got plenty of “nuts” and way too much people food for them to eat. I checked into it a little more this morning and apparently they do eat flowers and bulbs on occasion. This little guy acted, to me, like it was candy. Maybe it’s a treat for them.

Hmm…maybe try the local Humane Society or a web search to see what agency is in charge of caring for wildlife in your area? Department of conservation, licensed rehabbers, etc. Or maybe your local vet would know who to call…?

(sorry, I’m tired, just blurting ideas, but hopefully one of them will lead the right way).

Oh, no, you’re offering great advice and ideas. I can call the wildlife rehab – I’ve taken any number of injured or sick critters there. We have one squirrel who only seem to show up in the afternoon and picks around for the dregs left from the am feeding and I try to show him that I’m offering him some peanuts but he runs away and I don’t know if he comes back for them or not. His face is bald and there’s an injury over his eye but it looked much better today it seemed. I’m praying it’s not mange. We had another one recently with a large wound on her hip and my husband said that wound seemed to be approving and a neighbor found a dead squirrel with it’s throat really messed up. We may have a serial squirrel murderer on our hands – a raccoon? I heard a set-to in our holly tree in the wee hours the other night. Saw nothing to help me figure out what it might’ve been.

Anyway, thanks for the ideas and I’ll have to get cracking on it.

          You’re v. welcome – you’re such a good squirrel host!

The trees in our neighborhood drop so many acorns that we have trouble keeping our cocker spaniel from filling up on them as he’s going for walkies! It’s no surprise the squirrels are fat and healthy. And if they do eat any flowers, there’s a year-round supply, thanks to our climate. This little guy is certainly enjoying his floral dessert!

This actually reminds me of sloths eating their favorite blossoms as a special treat, like candy.

I hardly ever see squirrels in my neighborhood, but I think that’s because I live a block from Central Park. Plenty of squirrels there. If I were a squirrel, I think I’d prefer to live in a park, too.

So you’re saying that you saw this squirrel last year, but you hadn’t thought about it hya-since?

    😉
