Weekend Open Thread

Happy weekend, everyone! Today’s open thread is hosted by Lizzie and her human Hilda K., who are doing their civic duty by writing postcards to their local legislators.

… and ask them why the leash laws aren’t being enforced!

And after an intensive session of interacting with her elected officials, Lizzie does what anyone would feel compelled to do after such an occasion: bathe.

Ugh, I can practically taste the bureaucracy.
You already voted!

“Jingle toys are a right, not a privilege!”

    Lovely kitteh.

Ah, Mr. Meehan – I’ve called him!

    What a gorgeous Pussycat.

Gloomy day here near Philly, supposed to rain all day which will help relieve the sclerosis of the solid ice everywhere. Sigh. I don’t know whether to welcome spring or not. I have so much to get done out there and am not totally up to it. My favorite tree, a very early blooming buttercup winter hazel has had all it’s buds frozen off, so too the buds on my hydrangeas. Heaven knows what else has been affected by the late freeze.

On a bright note, going to a little musical gathering to play some Irish music tonight. Last night stayed home and watched the John Ford movie, “The Rising of the Moon”, three short stories about Ireland. SO funny, really delightful.

My room became a bit hoardy this week. I had to move things to use other things. Not good. Too much doing artwork.

So yesterday was: The First Sorting Of The Desk Day.

Today is: Second Desk Day. This includes opening all the bills and filing.

Second Desk Day is a prerequisite for actual bill paying and budget writing which may commence tonight.

Sunday is designated as: Gathering Laundry Day so Monday can be Laundry Day. Gathering Laundry Day includes the NOW I CAN GET TO THE CLOSET TO HANG UP CLEAN CLOTHES FROM LAST MONDAY LAUNDRY DAY. I won’t describe my clean clothes pile.

When all of the above is accomplished I enter the vortex of: Clearing Shelving To Move My Books That Are In ANOTHER ROOM To My Room.

None of the above includes SWAPPING A SH*T PRINTER OUT FOR A NEW ONE THAT IS CURRENTLY IN A BOX DOWN IN THE BASEMENT. (and getting the new printer to find my home network please god)

I did donate 3 boxes of clothing to a church that comes to pick them up by appointment.

And THE SUMMER SHALL BE KNOWN AS: THE GREAT SEASON OF SELLING ALL OF MY JEWELRY SUPPLIES ON EBAY SUMMER. Which does not include the sorting/selling of all my knicknacks that are still boxed from the hurricane of 2012.

And people told me I would be bored if I retired! NOT.

Oh, and Lizzie is beautiful. Soft looking with deep belly fur!

    • Murray C. March 18, 2017 / 11:52 am

All very commendable, Faye, and reminds me that I need to get off the computer and do much the same. ?

    • allein ? March 18, 2017 / 3:54 pm

Oh, you’re supposed to hang those up? No wonder my room looks like it does…

      • Faye March 18, 2017 / 4:14 pm

Luckily I live with people who have similar mish mash life styles. We are reasonably clean and can stand the same levels of mishmash.

I live alone which is a bit dangerous. At least when I had roommates I was forced to be a little quicker in tidying things up.

  4. debg March 18, 2017 / 11:40 am

Lizzie looks so soft and happy!

Errands for me today, then some housework in anticipation of company at the end of the month. My employer puts on a big fiber thingy in northern Colorado; two former students (married to each other) are coming in from New York to attend, and they’re staying with me. It will be lovely to see them, but I do not love shocks to my usual routine. Yarnfest is enough of a shock! (I’ll be working most of that weekend.) So mentally preparing is as big a chore as cleaning the house.

Other happy news: my electric spinning wheel came in and I love it! It’s a tiny little thing, so I can leave it in my living room on the coffee table. I’ve been ignoring my spinning in favor of knitting; now I can easily switch between the two!

And best of all, while I was petting Scorpius the other night (!!!!), I got slow blinkies from him. The next time, he actually turned so I could reach his tummy more easily! He likes it! He really likes it! I’m hoping for purrs in another month or so.

    • Murray C. March 18, 2017 / 11:59 am

Why am I seeing Scorpius in a Flying Nun habit? (He LIKES it….) But, seriously, congrats on bringing him so far, it’s a coup, for sure (a coup cat???)

And an electric spinning wheel – wow, that’s going to change the world of Nursery Rhyme illustration!?

I know what you’re going through re guests – I’m going to be facing a similar situation with having to prepare the house for guests fairly soon – actually a series of guests, I do believe. And, yes, the disruption is difficult but I do see it as a dangling carrot to help me achieve certain chores that I let slip for too long. ?

    • Faye March 18, 2017 / 4:17 pm

Ooo slow blinking equals air kisses in cat language. I’m thrilled for both of you. And a tummy invitation! Please keep us up to date!

  5. Julie March 18, 2017 / 11:53 am

Hilda and Lizzie are both awesome!

    I love the 2nd hovertext!

  6. Dulcie March 18, 2017 / 12:08 pm

Loverly kitty! Yes great fur – going to be a tough job getting the taste of beaurocracy out of that coat!
I too, of late, have become resistant to change in my routine!! I don’t know if I would like it that no one ever came to visit…so why is it so difficult when they do? Is this old age curmudgeonly-ness creeping up on me?

  7. Jan March 18, 2017 / 12:26 pm

It’s been raining a lot here; over three inches in the last week. Thankfully there were one or two nice days too! Lily doesn’t let the rain stop her, but is pretty disappointed that the birds and squirrels are in hiding….

    • debg March 18, 2017 / 1:37 pm

Jan, maybe you should bring a bird or squirrel indoors as a play toy? (innocent suggestion!)

      • Jan March 18, 2017 / 2:16 pm

OMG, I can just imagine the destruction of Lily AND a squirrel in the house! Eeek!

She’s inside now, it’s really really wet out there today! I have a pond in the front yard, the drainage behind my yard is a river and the grassy area beyond that is a lake… I’ve had more than 1.5in rain in less than 18 hours.

        • birdlady26 March 18, 2017 / 7:01 pm

Had chipmunks make there way inside my home before. Kitty chased them from behind the fridge, to behind a storage cabinet, into the family room where little chipmunk dived into a hole drilled in the side of the window seat (hole there so extension cord could come through). Put a hav-a-hart trap baited with some bird seed in the storage area of the window seat and finally caught the chippy. Took 2 days before the little ‘munk was brave enough to go in the trap.

Lizzie is a pretty girl and so civic-minded; good for her!

Just the usual Saturday routine here. Am impatiently waiting for true spring to start.
The false spring we had in February just set us up for heartbreak! Anyway, I am still grateful it’s the weekend!

  9. allein ? March 18, 2017 / 4:08 pm

Good morn- er, afternoon…evening? I’ve lost track of today. I slept very little the other night and nearly fell asleep at lunch yesterday and woke up around 8:30 this morning feeling not so great, got up for a few minutes to drink something, and went back to bed and slept on and off for…um, a long time. Finally dragged myself up a little while ago to catch up on my internetting. I assume it is also gloomy here (being not so far from Philly) but I haven’t even looked outside. About to take a shower. Lizzie and her peenk tongue are lovely. Keep fighting the good fight!

Tomorrow I had three possibilities of things to do! THREE!!! And I can only do one, which is my brother’s birthday dinner (his birthday was Wednesday. Beware the Ides of March, indeed). The other options were a game night at my friend’s, which I didn’t really want to do, or a little farewell party for a woman I used to work with years ago, who retired last year and is now moving to Texas to be closer to one or more of her sons.

I may do some laundry this evening. We’ll see. Maybe I’ll try that “hanging things up” thing that Faye mentioned. Sounds intriguing.

    • Faye March 18, 2017 / 4:24 pm

Maybe if we all hang one thing a day we can compare notes next Saturday. Lol.

    • Dubravkamcvmd March 18, 2017 / 4:46 pm

Let’s not be too hasty with this “hanging things up” idea. Why not wait and see how it actually works out for Faye over time?

      • allein ? March 18, 2017 / 4:58 pm

        That’s probably wise.

  10. Laura March 18, 2017 / 4:34 pm

Hi, all. Lizzie is beautiful! She should also write to Judge Posner; he’s on the Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit in Chicago, and is such an avowed cat person that he write something cat-related into nearly every opinion he delivers. The world can’t go wrong when judges are willing to publicly be cat people. 😀

We’ve had a quiet week. I just worked, a bit too much. Finished our taxes. Eeeeep!! I will say no more. But at least it’s done. The dogs are both happy, which is normal for them. We had a couple of days that were very cool, with nights that were downright chilly — it got into the upper 30s one night! which is chilly when we’re too cheap to turn on the heat for one or two nights a year — but today it’s back to bright and sunny and just lovely. This is why we moved here. I can’t get enough sunshine, even if I live in the shade. Gotta protect that alabaster skin, after all!

I’m watching the opening ceremony of the International Winter Games of the Special Olympics this afternoon. The world changes for the bad a lot, but sometimes it changes for the good, too, to have major TV networks picking up the Special Olympics and showing the whole thing on ABC and ESPN. It’s about time people were recognized for what they *can* do. Puts a smile on my face.

I hope everyone has as happy a week as I suspect Lizzie will. 😀

Thank you for sharing Lizzie, Hilda; I am quite enchanted by her brightening ‘eye make-up.’ It brings out her eyes quite well.

I guess no sign of Gigi the Cat Lady, huh? If you are out there and reading, hope you and hubby are well!

  12. allein ? March 18, 2017 / 7:10 pm

Just confirming that it is, indeed, gloomy here in lovely New Jersey. Though it doesn’t appear to be raining at the moment. Still wet out, and some of the snow melted…not much, but some.

One small load of laundry is going right now. That might be the most ambitious I’ll be today.

Now to figure out how to shush this game notification on my tablet that is for some reason louder than all my other notifications. Scared me half to death twice already today.

The sun was shining here, temps in the upper 60s. I spent the day at my daughter’s house. Tomorrow is her birthday, wednesday is her daughter’s 4th, so we celebrated with a kid party in the afternoon and some family games this evening. Lilly (the 4 yr old), when her aunt Keysa asked what she wanted, said, “A sun stuffed toy, I don’t have one of those” So, Aunt Keysa hand sewed a stuffed sun, because she has no sewing machine. It turned out pretty good, Lilly loved it. She got Barbies, and Little Ponies, and Shopkins, but her favorite present was a fake poop pile her father gave her. I’ve never seen anyone so excited about poop. We spent the rest of the day finding poop in our chairs, and Lilly giggling about it.

    • Murray C. March 18, 2017 / 11:35 pm

      Hilarious!

  14. Dulcie March 18, 2017 / 11:29 pm

Gigi has not been heard from recently? I too hope all’s well. Hugs ?

    • Murray C. March 18, 2017 / 11:35 pm

Thank you for paying attention to that – I hate it when people fall by the wayside – it’s hard to keep tabs, at least I find it to be the case. There are a few people we haven’t heard from for a long time and now I can’t conjure their names! I’d have to go back in the archives.

Big weekend here. Friday I took the train to Vienna and made a St. Patrick’s dinner for three (Irish Guinness Pie and Bailey Affogato 99) to rave reviews. Aside: If I had to do it all again, I would definitely go into the culinary arts instead of language teaching… On Saturday I attended a birthday party at a local brewery. The food and drink were excellent, but they tried to force us to dance (read: they hired a dance instructor) and sometimes you just want to, you know, DANCE. Got home late, slept in late, took the train back to central Austria where I am now trying to put together a test for tomorrow morning. It’s gonna be another late night…

  16. Hilda March 20, 2017 / 2:08 pm

Laura, thanks for the tip about Judge Posner! He sounds like a fine fellow.
And thanks to all with your kind comments about Lizzie. She lapped it up.
