Six Chicks Pics

Reader Carol B. has new mouths to feed: “We have just added six new chicken members to our little misfit gang, five Red Sex Link, and one Silkie. I was wondering if any of your very clever readers might have name suggestions, we are told all are females. They live with Missy-Moo the sheep and her pals, perhaps we can train them to ride sheepback one day.”

“McNugget”? I don’t like that name, try again.

That’s right, kids — keep eating that chicken feed so that you grow big and strong…

“Chicken feed? My FAVORITE!”

Well, maybe not this big and strong. (Yes, it’s the big chicken, submitted by Andrew Y.)

I went to the county fair a few years ago and someone had a chick named McNugget.

Someone else had two chickens – one black and white and one brown and black (I don’t know what breed) – named Oreo and Chips Ahoy, respectively. 🙂 ?

Some animals just demand silly names, don’t they? Especially chickens, which are inherently silly creatures to begin with!

And grumpy. These chicks look like they’re already very grumpy, so watch your ankles when they grow up! 😀

  3. Liz March 27, 2017 / 10:34 am

To me, it’s obvious: Lizzie, Jane, Mary, Kitty, Lydia.

Maybe Caroline for the Silkie, if she fancies herself. If she’s placid and complacent, maybe Charlotte (Lucas-Collins).

    Cute little peeps!

    • Madame X March 27, 2017 / 11:15 am

      Hear hear!!!

      I second the motion!

The silkie could also be named Emma…

    • Skimpy March 27, 2017 / 3:14 pm

      Bravo!!

    • Mal March 28, 2017 / 11:32 pm

      Haha!

  4. tara March 27, 2017 / 10:49 am

Hm. I’m partial to those old fashioned names. The top six girls names of 1917 were: Mary, Helen, Dorothy, Margaret, Ruth, and Mildred.

Then again I also like the name Lulu for a chicken. You could do Lulu, Gigi, Mimi, Dodo, Lala and Maxine (for the silkie).

OR!…. oh, no. I’ve got to stop and get back to work.

Can’t wait to read all of the suggestions all-a-y’all come up with!

    • Smartypants March 27, 2017 / 11:47 am

Oh, I like ‘Mildred’! I used to know a Mildred (human) and she was a trip – she worked well into her eighties and drove her own car (safely, too).

      • Alice Shortcake March 28, 2017 / 3:32 am

        That was my grandma’s name!

    • Gigi the cat lady March 27, 2017 / 12:01 pm

You calling me chicken Tara? Them’s are fighting words you know!

      Just kidding LOL!! ???

      • Emsthemonster March 27, 2017 / 2:55 pm

Some years ago I went to a lake on a hot summer day with my friends. We walked into the water when I heard an elderly woman scream: “Ems wtf are you doing there, I told you not to go in the water. I hope you didn’t pee in it.” I swear I did not, but I still got frozen for a moment 🙂 Ems was a cute labrador, she did not actually reveal whether she had peed in the lake or not.

    • N. Fritz March 27, 2017 / 1:42 pm

Tara, are you… are you quoting “The Merry Widow” by Franz Lehar?!

“I’m going to Maxim’s, where all the girls are queens,

Lolo, Dodo, ZsuZsu, Cloclo, Margo, FruFru.”

      • tara March 27, 2017 / 1:56 pm

Oh, gosh no Gigi! No offense intended! 🙂 I just really like the double sounding names! Gigi included.

And no, N. Fritz – it was just a coincidence. Ha! I wish I were that clever.

Love all the suggestions! How will you choose Carol B.?
        🙂

        • Caz March 27, 2017 / 8:40 pm

It will be difficult, so many great names!

  5. Faye March 27, 2017 / 11:30 am

Snowhite for the Silkie. So Snowhite and the five (fill in the blank). Not Dwarves. …and the “something funny” that come in five.

  6. Caz March 27, 2017 / 12:14 pm

Yay peeps made it on! So many good suggestions so far, thank you! I was just out with them, videoing, they’re growing so quickly, their little feathers are starting to grow 🙂

Oh and i hope none grow as big at that….big guy! Good Lord, i’d be able to put a saddle on it and go riding!

    • Smartypants March 27, 2017 / 12:15 pm

      Lovely pix! They’re adorable.

  7. Lucy's Mom March 27, 2017 / 12:29 pm

Daisy, Lily, Rosie, Buttercup, Jasmine and Poppy.

    • Faye March 27, 2017 / 2:45 pm

      Ooo. I like that combo.
      Wish I could have chickens!

  8. Caz March 27, 2017 / 12:42 pm

Hope you mind a little video of them Mike, it might help with names 🙂

I had just put down some fresh hay, one found a little flower and well….they all wanted it!

    I hope that link works!

    • Faye March 27, 2017 / 2:47 pm

Ack! Toooooo cute! In the best way, of course. ??????

    • Julie March 27, 2017 / 4:04 pm

      They are so fast!

      • Caz March 27, 2017 / 4:17 pm

Yes! I got quite a fright when they came running toward me and the open side of their pen!

I also did a slow motion video of them 🙂

  9. Ricky's Mom March 27, 2017 / 12:52 pm

That giant chicken puts me in mind of Foghorn Leghorn. Not a name I’d recommend for any of the little peeps.

    • allein ? March 27, 2017 / 12:54 pm

What was the name of his little chickenhawk buddy?

      • Tigger Jourard March 27, 2017 / 1:01 pm

        Henery Hawk!

  10. Julie March 27, 2017 / 1:32 pm

I think you should name them all Julie.

    Julie 1, Julie 2, Julie 3, …..

    Ha ha ha!!!

    • N. Fritz March 27, 2017 / 1:48 pm

That’s what the Romans did… boys got proper names, while girls got “Julia Prima, Julia Secunda, Julilla,” (Julia the first, Julia the second, little Julie, etc)

      • Patty March 27, 2017 / 2:07 pm

All of my husband’s great great uncles and his great grandfather were named Heinrich. They went by their middle names. Their father’s name was Heinrich also. Maybe it’s a German thing, too, or the original Heinrich was narcissistic.

        • Laura March 27, 2017 / 4:40 pm

Not just German. My family is English and Irish from way back, and yet nearly every male has John in their name. Most of the time it’s their first name, too. Both my father and his father were John something, and they went by their middle name. I’m talking about for *generations.* You’d think they’d have picked a more original name to repeat every generation!

      • Skimpy March 27, 2017 / 3:22 pm

Italians were worse, when imagination or the calendar failed, they named their boys Primo, Secondo, … Quinto, Ottavo… (First, Second…)
Luckily they seldom had more than ten children 🙂

        • DebG March 27, 2017 / 5:53 pm

Romans did that too. Boys could get number names as well as “proper” names”: Octavius, Quintus, etc.

          • Laura March 27, 2017 / 8:18 pm

Well, a lot of Sherpas have the first name of the day of the week on which they’re born. And their last name is Sherpa. It makes for a lot of folks with the same name!

            • Smartypants March 27, 2017 / 9:00 pm

Yes, and I think all Sikhs take the last name “Singh” – must be quite a challenge looking up a phone number!

    • Caz March 27, 2017 / 2:10 pm

      LOL 🙂

    • allein ? March 27, 2017 / 2:33 pm

I’m reminded of Mrs. McCave, who had 23 sons and she named them all Dave.

  11. Ricky's Mom March 27, 2017 / 1:52 pm

Trixie, Dixie, Fifi, Gigi, Coco, and Beatrice Louise.

    • tara March 27, 2017 / 2:00 pm

Oh, if they are living with Missy-Moo, maybe they all need that hyphenated onto the name: Trixie-Moo, Dixie-Moo, Fifi-Moo, Gigi-Moo, Coco-Moo, and Beatrice Louise.

      Too much?

      • Caz March 27, 2017 / 2:09 pm

That is a very good point! The Moo should get in there somehow! 😉

        • Faye March 27, 2017 / 2:49 pm

          Yes. I agree!

  12. michael March 27, 2017 / 2:26 pm

“five Red Sex Link, and one Silkie.”

    … Red ‘Sex Link’, and … ???

    Is this NSFW?

    • Faye March 27, 2017 / 2:50 pm

      Chicken genetics. SFW

    • Blakeney March 27, 2017 / 7:34 pm

Seriously – I also noticed the “five Red Sex Link and one Silkie” mention!

So…what type of chicken is the Red Sex Link (I imagine it makes seductive cooing noises)? Or is somebody adding links to the site that they shouldn’t?

      • Faye March 27, 2017 / 7:39 pm

        I’m gonna google. Brb.

Sex-links are cross-bred chickens whose color at hatching is differentiated by sex, thus making chick sexing an easier process.

        Boring!

        • Caz March 28, 2017 / 8:34 am

Yes, we wanted to make sure, as much as you can, that they are female, the Silkie, well we’re just keeping our fingers crossed that it’s a female also, if not then i guess we have a rooster!
There are lots of fun names in the farming world 🙂

  13. Alice Shortcake March 27, 2017 / 2:45 pm

Ye gods, that giant chicken is TERRIFYING. You can practically hear it saying “I am descended from dinosaurs”.

    • fkaWaldenPond March 27, 2017 / 9:58 pm

      Yup.

  14. Kar March 27, 2017 / 3:43 pm

They think that chicken is three feet tall!! That’s not a chicken, that’s verging on pterodactyl.

    • fkaWaldenPond March 27, 2017 / 9:58 pm

Second Yup. Oh and I vote Frufru for the silky chicken.

  15. Jasper's Hoomin March 27, 2017 / 5:51 pm

Maybe those are just little tiny hen houses.

    • Faye March 27, 2017 / 7:42 pm

      Or really tiny people!

    • Smartypants March 27, 2017 / 9:01 pm

      That must be it! 😀

  16. Caz March 27, 2017 / 9:05 pm

Thank you all for your wonderful name suggestions! So much better than my facebook friends ones, all were food related 🙁
All have been written down so that when their little personalities start to show i’ll know which route to take. Maybe a Buttercup, Dixie, Emma, Frufru, Snowhite, and a Julie-Moo! 😉

Knew you guys were the ones to ask! x

  17. Mal March 28, 2017 / 11:39 pm

In my universe, chickens are somehow associated with daytime television. So I suggest:

Whoopi, Wanda, Kelly, Katie, Latifah, and Osborne.
