I Just Can’t Wait to Be Emperor!

“Actually, son, your mom and I need to explain something. We’re all emperor penguins, it’s not just you. Also, we’re not actually royalty or in charge of anything, and we can’t have people banished, and there is no such thing as ‘penguin palace’.”

But today is World Penguin Day, so there’s that.

One of his feet is tilted up, like he’s about to start dancing. Happy Feet!

There’s no penguin palace? That’s just so wrong! Clearly, something needs to be done about this.

I just learned about this today, so I haven’t been able to look at it yet, but in honor of World Penguin Day, I present to you:

    PENGUIN WATCH!

Oh cool, it’s one of those citizen scientist projects! I signed up for one a while ago, where you wear a specially treated bracelet that monitors your exposure to environmental chemicals, but I think I missed the deadline – it’s something I’d like to try again.

I heard about it on a podcast called The Hilarious World of Depression (which I recommend; it’s hosted by a guy named John Moe and he interviews comedians who have struggled with depression). They’ve only done one season so far, and they haven’t started the second season yet, but they’ve been putting up shorter “Placebo” episodes where he talks to regular people (listeners of the podcast) to fill the gap a bit. If you look for the episode called “PLACEBO: Therapeutic Ukuleles, Therapeutic Penguins, Therapeutic Yarn” you can hear a bit more about Penguin Watch and a couple similar programs, and there’s also a bit for the knitters among us. 😉

Living in NYC puts me at a disadvantage for monitoring pengwings, I mean penglings, I mean penguins.

There’s an aquarium in NY, isn’t there? Just go monitor them in person. I can even come up and meet you and we can monitor together. 😉

It’s a plan. There are also penglings at the Central Park Zoo. I’d be happy to monitor those with a pal, too.

Omg, that site is too addicting and I have real work to do, so I had to really force myself to close out of it after couting several pics.

I’ve been unproductive enough today without that. I’ll have to look later.

Trying to write my self-evaluation for my performance review. My boss already told us the max raise is 2% (he gets 2% of our department’s total salary to divvy up between us). It was technically due yesterday but I was on vacation when he sent the forms out and I spent yesterday getting caught up on actual work, so my boss just has to wait.

Baby penglings, I mean penguins (thanks, Ricky’s Mom) are soooooooo fluffy!

One of my favorite memories of Australia is the Fairy Penguins (Little Blue Penguins). A tour took us to a beach at dusk where we watched them come ashore. The tour people were very careful about keeping us out of their “space”. I can still remember their speedy little landings and chirping. Wikipedia even has recordings on their little penguin page. No pictures were allowed.

While I will probably never make my bucket list item of visiting Antarctica, I am confident I (and my two sisters) will make our way back to Oz. So much to see, so little time. I’m convinced that the nicest people on the planet all live there. It must be the water, or Koalas, or Roos…

      …or quokkas, or wombats…

Saw blue penguins in New Zealand also.

Almost as cool as the humpback whales in Alaska. When they surface and cleared their air holes by blowing thru air… a spray shoots up in the air and this deep “whomp” sound is heard. Are you old enough to remember glass soda pop bottles? The sound of this is like the biggest soda bottle in the world where one is blowing across the top, WHOMP.

Glacier Bay – another place I’d go back to in a heartbeat, MCO
