Hounded Hounds

Shout-out today goes to P. H. for supporting the site. Thank you! Now, the last time we saw a baby emu playing with dogs, it was such a hit that reader Faye found this video of a trio of basset hounds who aren’t quite sure what to make of this bird.

Oh my god. Guess I’m not the only one who wants to flap the ears. What a patient doggie.

      “Mmmmm….delicious ears!”

I have the same rug, however, it does not have 3 bassets and a baby emu on it, i should send it back for a full refund!
Love when the little one just took off “gotta run, gotta run!” Back to ear nibbling 🙂

Now I know what Basset Hound ears were designed for. Baby Emu toys. Of course.

Pups need a comment bubble that says “Funny looking chicken”.

Basset hounds are the only dogs my husband and I both agree we love, I still call them Hush Puppies after the shoes. I used to get a new pair at the start of school every year.

There used to be a Hush Puppies store near me when I was a kid. It later became a carpet store, then eventually the building was torn down and replaced with an Audi dealer.

We never got shoes from there, though (my mom used to take me to a Stride Right a few towns away because the salesman there was really good about making sure any shoes we got properly fit my very narrow feet…I could never wear slip-on shoes when I was little because they always slipped right off).

This takes me back, Allein! My mom, too, would only buy us shoes at Stride Rite. And no Hush Puppies were allowed before I was 12 (I think); our feet had to be developed enough before we could get anything other than very sturdy shoes. I think they were mostly Stride Rite brand and maybe Buster Browns (or similar).

Sneakers were a different matter; usually Keds, but I remember being very happy to get PF Flyers once. Not that I really could run faster or jump higher in them, but I could pretend I could!

My school shoes looked like these …

… although for some reason I only remember them in white. That would be a very impractical color, so I think my memory must be wonky on that aspect. I loathed these shoes; I thought they were “baby” shoes. There were girls in my classes who wore patent-leather Mary Janes to school every day, although I didn’t learn they were called Mary Janes till I was well into adulthood. In my house they were called “party shoes”; I couldn’t wear them to school.

Amazing what comes back to you …

I loved my patent leather Mary Janes. Also only for special occasions.

Like my second birthday! The shoes are to the right; I still have the dresser I’m standing on, and the silver duck on the shelf behind my head (it’s a bank; the pink-hatted one is mine, the blue is my brother’s); and my mom currently has the alphabet block container on her dresser. My grandmother made the Raggedy Ann and Andy and the elephant on the shelf, too. I have Raggedy Ann and some other critters my grandmother made on top of one of my bookcases; don’t know what happened to the elephant, though. (Also, you can see my mom’s arms in the left corner, just so no one thinks I had neglectful parents who would leave me standing on a dresser alone just to get a picture.)

I had a pair of KangaROOS sneakers. I loved that pocket, even though you couldn’t put anything more than maybe a quarter or two in it.

Gigi, I’m jealous. You got a new pair of puppies at the start of every school year. Boy, you must have had a lot of dogs by the time you graduated.

Hee, hee, I had the same thought.

Does anyone remember the foot X-ray machine so you could see your foot inside the shoe to make sure they fit properly?

    Even emus get the zoomies…

And is it e-moos or eem-yous?

    • Duckie ? May 22, 2017 / 8:52 pm

      I think it’s eem-yous

      • Ricky's Mom May 23, 2017 / 9:17 am

So it is! I’ve been pronouncing emu incorrectly all my life. Not that I’ve had to say it very often. Mostly I fill it in in crosswords.

  7. Zapes May 22, 2017 / 6:10 pm

Perhaps the basset’s patience is because he realizes that someday that little stripey fuzzball will grow into a T-Rex.

  8. debg May 22, 2017 / 6:13 pm

Bassets could beat out bunnehs when it comes to eloquent looks of disapproval.

    • Dana May 22, 2017 / 8:36 pm

That doggie in the front was giving some serious side eye contempt to the camera. Not thrilled about the new (very annoying) brother.

  9. Mal May 22, 2017 / 8:11 pm

Evolution got up on the wrong side of the bed the day it came up with the emu. What with all this emu action lately, I think it’s time to reprise the … Emu Tango!

This was new to me. Fabulous!

      • Smartypants May 23, 2017 / 10:16 am

        Me too – I’m so happy I could incubate a sprinkler! 😀

        • Faye May 23, 2017 / 12:04 pm

I’m incubating! This is one of the best animal video and music combo.

  10. TrixieAndSam May 22, 2017 / 8:32 pm

If not for the internet, who would ever believe emus and bassett hounds living together?

  11. Smartypants May 23, 2017 / 12:37 am

Those bassets have the patients of saints! Can’t believe the one who is still wagging at the end – what good doggie sibs.

  12. Yadre May 23, 2017 / 5:38 am

Do basset hounds actually run? Or is it their superpower?

  13. Michael May 23, 2017 / 5:49 am

Why would a dog allow itself to be picked on like that? Ears are sensitive; that’s gotta hurt at least a little. One bite, that skinny little neck, it’d be over before the emu could dodge. (Or maybe it wouldn’t; that bird is quick!) I’d be scared to death watching that in person. (On video, I can assume it does not end with bloodshed or it wouldn’t be here.) I can only guess and hope that the dogs and bird were introduced gradually or the bird grew up around them and the dogs have shown this same patience from the beginning. What good, patient pups! They were more forgiving than I’d be. (I wouldn’t bite the baby bird’s head off — dogs have teeth, I have hands — but I’d shoo it away after the first nip.)

    • Gigi the cat lady May 23, 2017 / 8:57 am

Dogs usually know instinctively to be patient when dealing with babies of any species. They will accept treatment from a baby that they would not from an adult.

      • Michael May 24, 2017 / 4:29 am

I’d expect that with young of their own species — something about Darwin — but not necessarily something so far away on the Tree of Life as an emu. Sweet pups.
