Sweet lookin bun. I’m sitting here listening to a grateful parrot enjoy his Sunday breakfast. Love the little “mmmmm” sounds that I get. I know he’s not really saying “Mmm, mmm, mmm, Mom! This is GOOD!” But that is what is sometimes sounds like. Crunch, crunch, crunch, mmmmm. Heading back over to my parent’s place today to continue to help them declutter and get ready for their big move to a retirement facility in a couple of weeks. 45 years of family memories in that house that they are selling – moving now is the right decision for them but that doesn’t lessen the impact of the feelings. Time is a relentless beast.

Let yourself mourn for the house Birdcage. I still miss my Grandparents’ house. I also miss the house I lived in until I was 14. My Dad lost our house in a bankruptcy and it took me years and years to get over it because we never talked about it. I couldn’t go back so I looked and looked at the house on Google street view. ?

Boy, can I relate to what your parents are doing. EXCEPT it’s hubby and I who are doing this after 59 years accumulation. We just can’t handle any of the BIG stuff to maintain a home any longer. Our son & fiancée are coming every other w/e to help declutter and get things ready to be sold, given to a Veterans association, tossed, or moved with us. We move in early September as the place we’re going to is still under construction. We’ve only lived in 4 houses and everything we’ve accumulated went with us with each move so there’s a lot here to deal with. We didn’t realize the attic held so much!! And trying to decide what will fit into the apartment we’ve moving into. We have the floor plan and do a lot of measuring to see where things will fit. But, in the long run, we won’t have to worry about yard work, housekeeping, cooking, etc. There will be a greenhouse so I may be able to keep on working with plants. Will also have an activities department to shuttle us to interesting places and things to see and do which is what retirees (especially those in their 80’s like us) are supposed to do. We’ll be close to our son as they’re also moving from Florida (where we’ve been for the past 11 years) to their other home in Arizona.

Dear Birdcage and Flowerfanatic, major kudos to you for what you are doing! I’m sure it is not easy but speaking as someone who lost their mother and three years later grandmother, (my sister and I were the only grandchildren) and inherited two completely filled homes, this is a gift for your children. How we wish we had been able to go through things with our mother and grandmother and ask questions. We found so many things and we don’t know why they were important. Thinking of you both and hoping it is positive and cathartic experience. xo

Well said. I am left alone with many questions.

The comment about being able to look at things together has been a help. Randy (son) was looking at pictures and asking who this was and that one was. He was amazed at MY baby pictures!! Guess he didn’t think his 80 year old mother was that cute EVER!! Yes, I was. 🙂 Other relatives who he’d never met (like my cousins) who had given my Mom graduation pictures, etc. were looked at and talked about. He’s going to hang onto all of those kinds of things as they are his FAMILY!! Not everyone either got or kept things like that. My mom came from a family of 12 children so there were LOTS of pictures of their children. We’re moving into Independent Living to start with as we can get assistance in our apartment from Health Agency CNA’s (certified nursing assistants) if needed. They can even maintain litter pans if I can’t do it myself!! They know how important animals are in everyone’s lives. If we require more care, they can move us to a section for total Assisted Living care and/or Memory Care where nurses will be there for us. We’ve tried to plan for what’s to come as we know there is going to be more care needed eventually. We’ll have a balcony to sit out on and view the mountains in the background plus there is a gully for rainwater runoff that will have wildlife gathering around it plus I plan on putting up a hummingbird feeder as AZ has lots of hummers year-round and there will be enough room for a few planters for color. I keep trying to remember the good things we have to look forward to but I still get a big case of depression thinking I don’t have much time left on this earth. I don’t want to take any depression meds as the side effects are worse than the depression. My mom was 88 and my dad 2 months from his 90th when they passed. But I’m closing in on both of those ages.

Flowerfanatic, don’t count yourself out too soon! My grandmother lived to be nearly 103 and was sharp as a tack and enjoyed life thoroughly those last many years. You’re doing great — keep it up and you’ll be around to enjoy the Cute with us for many years, too!

So true, Tara. When my grandmother made her last downsize, she was terribly unhappy because she would have to get rid of almost all the rest of her furniture. My sister and I were the only grandchildren, and my sister lived halfway across the country so couldn’t take any of the big pieces. So I promised her I’d take it, and she moved quite cheerfully.

I’ve still got most of it, too — she had lovely things. I sent my sister multiple boxes of small things and she was happy with that. She’s since inherited all our mom’s furniture that was left and I’m getting a few boxes of small things. It all works out, and all the generationsare happy. Downsizing is so emotional and painful. Thanks to everyone who’s doing it or helping — it eases everyone’s mind to know their things are going to a home where they will still be loved and treasured.

One item that’s definitely going with us is a corner cabinet my father made when we first got married. The only things he didn’t create by hand was the glass for the sliding doors and the track it ran on. Everything else was hand sawed. You’d never know it wasn’t made by a cabinet craftsman. It’s perfection. I’m sure Randy & Susan will find a place in their home when it has to leave us. Randy takes after my Dad as he can make or do anything that requires thinking and using your hands. They found a picture in one of the old-fashioned HUGE oval frames and thought it was me. NOPE, it was their grandmother (my mom). She must have been about 4 years old. He is turning 52 on 6/23 so he’s now really interested in the past of our family. Prior to this he didn’t show much interest. It’s been fun getting to tell him things about both sides of our family now that he’s actually interested in finding out about us.

If our mental health holds out, I think we’ll be in good shape for more years. Physical condition isn’t terrific but we manage. Laura, your G-mother at 103 was impressive!! I know living here in central Florida we see a LOT of people well into their 90’s and older as the newspaper loves talking about them. I’m sure the people moving into the senior facility with us hope they can tell stories about their longevity and continue to prosper with the good care we will get.

Oh the teeny, ( Mini ?) Rex, bun tongue- thunk. That precious bunneh and company ( need more than one to get the job done) can come do my windows anyday. I probably wouldn’t let them leave either.
Birdcage- it can be hard to downsize and clear out a parent’s home, no matter that its best for all. There are so many memories and so many things to make decisions about. Hopefully it will go smoothly.
