And finally: An Uncanny Rescue

He wore his best suit. He had an important meeting with the mayor of his town in Orillia, Canada. But when Mike MacMillan saw a skunk with its head trapped in a cola can, he knew he had to help — even if it cost him his suit and business ties. (Washington Post, via Karen F.)

Yay for the skunk saver! That really was a brave and selfless thing to do.

It really was. An invisible man for the Hunks of Cutetropolis calendar!

The nipped-out cats had me in tears of laughter.

There was a picture of him in the WaPo article. Kinda cute.

What a great guy! And what a happy skunk. ?

I needed this to remind me there are people like him around – some days the daily depressing news make me feel I would like to resign from the human species.
Thanks Mike MacMillan, and I hope you did not have to trash your suit.

I totally agree with your comment! And I think the suit was safe–I noted that the “business end” never came into play as Mike (wisely!) backed up as soon as the skunk was released. However, that in no way lessens the magnitude of his kind act.

Gosh, that skunk sure could book it!

Mike MacMillan is my hero. And also: Yay for baby roo savers! Yay for dogs who save people! Yay for cat adopters! For dogs with bus passes and bus drivers who let them ride!

I’m so glad the guy took a chance and helped that poor skunk. Actually I’m really glad there are still people in the world who care and help the critters that need helping.

But I have to say the baby kangaroo’s little paw poking out of his mama’s pouch reminded me of the Martien’s hand crawling out of the saucer in the ending of the 1953 War of the Worlds. What can I say, I’m just a big nerd ?

Kudos to the skunk saver! That took guts!?Boy! can that skunk run! I can hear him shouting “I’m free, I’m free!”
However, the question remains: how in the heck did he get his head inside a coke can in the first place????

    • Dana June 21, 2017 / 11:43 am

Yes, hooray for the skunk saver! What a brave man. I imagine there was some Coke residue left in the can that the skunk was trying to get to. Slurp.

Actually according to the article, the can had been used to hold drippings from a grill so I guess the top had been cut out. Otherwise I really couldn’t see how a skunk (or any other animal except maybe a mouse!) could get their head into the little opening. But kudos to the other Mike for helping out this little guy and thankfully the skunk didn’t spray.

Hope the skunk didn’t get any cuts on his face! Brave man, he was. I might have just called animal control.

    Those cats on ‘nip.

I swear a few of those are a whisker away from needing narcan. Seriously, I can’t imagine how much it would take my cat to sit stoned and drooling like some of those.

My cats don’t really respond much to catnip. I don’t think Stars responds at all. They have a few catnip toys and I don’t think I’ve ever seen her play with them (she doesn’t play with toys much at all, though). Stripes will dig them out occasionally and go a little nuts but it doesn’t last long. My mom keeps all their toys in a basket in the living room, and he’s more likely to dig out a ponytail holder than a ‘nip toy. I don’t know what it is he loves so much about ponytail holders, but my mom had to buy some for him when I still lived there because he kept trying to steal mine (sometimes directly from my hair).

I’m guessing ponytail holders would appeal to a cat because they’re sproingy and unpredictable when you play with them, and also have scent/hair oil from your favorite humans.

My mom actually bought him a set of neon ones from the dollar section at the grocery store.

He also likes twist-ties, milk rings, and bendy straws*. I don’t know why she spends money on actual cat toys.

*When they were little, Stars knocked a pea into a space where she couldn’t reach it. After watching her flail about for a few minutes I took pity on her and went to get it out. I couldn’t reach, either, so I got a bendy straw to sweep it out. They forgot all about the peas and spent the rest of the night knocking the straw around the house. Until they lost it under a closet door in the hallway. 😛
