Every Hot Dog Has its Day

Today is National Hot Dog Day, the day we get to thank
The portable pup that fills you up, the handy, humble frank
It’s great with mustard and relish, that’s a winner every time
Or chili or ‘kraut, without a doubt. But not ketchup, that’s a crime.
But no matter what we pile on top, we prize what’s underneath
That’s why I say on my hot dog today I want nothing but my teeth!

I like to start in the middle!

If ketchup on a hot dog is a crime, then lock me up, because that’s the only thing I put on a hot dog (but I don’t really like hot dogs and haven’t had one in a few years, at least…so doggy can have mine).

As kids we used to throw around the phrase “to eat something with RELISH”. If you take into account that the word has two meanings it can be quite comical!

I’m right there with ya on that. Ketchup and dill (not sweet!) relish.

      YUM.

      I hate mustard.

I only like yellow mustard on McDonald’s hamburgers, but that’s just part of the whole package (and they don’t use a lot). I do like honey mustard dressing, though.

    ?? on poetry!
I thought ketchup was only a crime on steak? I LIKE ketchup on hot dogs. Yellow mustard, not so much. I was just asking my sister if we could grill today.??

    “Stay… STAYYYY….”

    LOVE the poem, Mike.

:sigh: I miss rhyme and meter…

Hehe, delightful. I lived in Chicago for a few years, and I can not get behind their hot dog weirdness. A friend of mine actually got kicked out of an establishment for asking for ketchup, even though he only wanted it for the fries. I’m also against beef hot dogs; being from Cincinnati, aka Porkopolis, its Kahn’s pork hot dogs only for me.

I’m not crazy about hot dogs. When I was a kid, every time I ate a hot dog I got a headache. My mother thought I was faking it. Hot dogs, if there’s no chili, are best with miracle whip. My husband loves hot dogs, even the 89 cent store brand dogs. He eats them as a snack, just wraps them in a slice of (plastic wrapped singles, ick) cheese and eats them cold.

Sounds like you could’ve had an allergic reaction to something in the dogs. The coloring, the preservatives, the ridiculous sodium content…

My brother was the same way so we only ate Hebrew National, which being kosher, had no artificial anything.

When I first moved to Ga, I didn’t understand the logic of a slaw dog. Raised a Yankee, a dog with Kraut was sacred.

But I get it now, the crunch of the cabbage and mayo is pure fat, so what’s not to love about that?

Chicago puts so much stuff on theirs, the dog gets lost, IMO. Just a little sauce, some onion for crunch, and I’m good.

Hot dog with ketchup, mayo, a bit of relish, cheese sprinkles and bacon. Mm mm. Puts my cholesterol level somewhere in Alaska.

Ketchup, ideally with a small amount spicy mustard, onions and DILL pickle relish. If any one of these is not available (why do people want sweet pickle relish?), then it’s ONLY ketchup.?

I am so craving a hot dog now but I’m a vegetarian. I wonder if there are any tolerable veggie options out there?

    • 6rabbits July 19, 2017 / 1:13 pm

There are vegetarian hot dogs. Just don’t know how good they’d taste?

      • Smartypants July 19, 2017 / 1:56 pm

        That’s good to know!

I’m always pleased with Morningstar Farms products (I’m not even a vegetarian; I just like their sausages, burgers and ‘hot wings’ better than the real thing) – so I assume they make a veggie dog.

        • Brouhaha July 19, 2017 / 2:37 pm

Agreed. The crumbles makes for a lovely taco “meat” with seasoning.

        • Kar July 19, 2017 / 3:34 pm

Morningstar Spicy black burgers. The Kroger near me can’t keep those in stock.

          • Smartypants July 19, 2017 / 3:59 pm

Yum yum! And the Spicy Indian Lentil and the Mediterranean Chickpea.

      • Puddleglum July 19, 2017 / 8:16 pm

Thanks for the recommendations! And yes Morningstar has some good stuff. I usually go for their breakfast sausages but I shall have to check out their other options.

not sure what happened, but that second down vote was an accident. sorry about that, chief.

one time years ago, i noticed that the sweet dog from across the street had gotten loose from her yard when her people were out for the day, and was wandering around unhappily. i tried to just call her but my better-thinking roomie of the time grabbed some hot dogs from the fridge, and bribed the nervous pooch back to safety behind her secured fence. so consequently i tend to think of hot dogs as emergency supplies.

The complete “in the moment” look on doggie’s face is so precious. I am putting myself in that total zen moment imagining I have a giant Toblerone bar between my teeth. If no one minds me saying so it could rival the Big O…

I don’t eat hot dogs a lot but when I do it is a steamy from Alpha or Montreal Pool Room. That’s a steamed hotdog in a steamed bun with mustard, cole slaw (vinegar not mayo) and with cayenne pepper sprinkled liberally on top.

  11. Faye July 19, 2017 / 1:59 pm

Hebrew National grilled or Sabrett steamed with yellow mustard and chopped raw onions. Soft Wonder Bread roll lightly toasted.

IMHO Ketchup is for burgers only! But I do not use it.

I like a BLT burger with mayo and black pepper. Or burger raw onion sliced very thin mayo and pepper.

    • Faye July 19, 2017 / 2:01 pm

Oh Ketchup on crispy fries with huge amount of black pepper.

      • Smartypants July 19, 2017 / 4:02 pm

Yum! I just discovered a black-pepper popcorn that was unusual & tasty.

        • Kar July 19, 2017 / 4:26 pm

The Porter near me makes this vinegar popcorn that will cause a lung spasm if you inhale the wrong way but it’s so good!
