Spare a Buck to Save a Bat?

Reader Holly has a challenge for all Cutetropolitans: Can you help Bat World Sanctuary come out on top of Macy’s Shop for a Cause Charity Challenge? Bat World rescues injured and orphaned bats for return to the wild. If they out-raise all the other charities in the event, Macy’s will add $100,000 to their take, which will help Bat World pursue outreach efforts to protect more bats everywhere. Watch this video to see their success for yourself, and donate before August 9!

I will donate when I manage to remember to get my credit card – I hate when they don’t have PayPal as an option!!!! I was floored to see someone made a $5,000 contribution! I wish I had that kind of money. Good on them!

I’ve never seen that before so I wish they had showed more of the mama bat giving birth.
And I agree with Murray C, to bad they don’t have PayPal, that’s the only thing I use for everything internet wise.

I’ll be honest, I don’t see a difference with a lot of those Before/After shots. They’re so small, its hard to see their wounds like that ceiling fan accident. Easier to see with say, a honking huge manatee who had a fight with a boat propeller.

However, I like bats and what they do so sure, I’ll donate a buck for a bat.

Even when I use Paypal, it hits my credit card so it’s all the same to me.

I’m just a lazy so-and so who doesn’t like to have to go to the kitchen and get my handbag and fish out my wallet, then fill in all the data. It’s “simplify my life” thing.

It is hard to see the difference in the before and afters if you’re not used to looking at healthy bats, or can’t recognize what an experienced rehabber knows is an injury. Plus, some things you just have to see in person, with the bat moving around, I’m sure.?

      • Kar July 27, 2017 / 7:51 pm

It doesn’t help when the healthy ones just sit there, with their wings tucked in so you can’t really see if they’re plumper or if their membranes look better.

OMG, what precious sweeties! I squee’d so loud, my neighbors must have wondered what was going on. And the birth video is amazing. Count me in.

Thanks for the inspiration — made a donation to BWS, and finally re-up’d my monthly credit card donation to AWI.

Thanks to Holly for the pub. Donation done! I just memorize my credit card number…then I don’t have to go looking for it when I want to buy something or donate on-line. It’s easy and probably good for your brain, somehow….. I hate Paypal…..

Yay! Thanks for doing this so quickly, Mike!??
If you want to see more of their bat vids check out their facebook page or You Tube. If you really want to squee, tune into their Live Bat Cams at night to watch all the non-releasable bats do their thing. Amanda Lollar, who founded Bat World Sanctuary, does amazing work!?

I, too, was disappointed there wasn’t a PayPal option, but that has something to do with who’s running the contest, which is Macy’s through Crowdwise.

Can non-releasable bats be kept as pets? I have no objection to one or two hanging around my place and eating bugs. Especially those blankety blanking mosquitos!

      • 6rabbits July 27, 2017 / 2:40 pm

Nopety, nope, nope, nope. Bats are NOT good pets! In fact that’s why BWS has so many flying foxes because they are very popular on the illegal pet market. I love the idea of one of those sweeties hanging around, too, but bats are incredibly social creatures and need a lot of flying space, too. You should read some of the stories at BWS about the horrible situations the pet bats were in, and how much their lives have improved. The newest pet rescue is Gizmo and they made a video about him.

However, you COULD put up a Bat House, which would be inhabited by LOTS of bats who would fly around your neighborhood eating bugs!

        • Duckie ? July 27, 2017 / 4:51 pm

Bat house?!?! Hmmm, interesting. Definitely something to think about. Not to mention the incredibly high potential of absolutely freaking out several people.
Cutetropolitans, do you think that, if I wrote to Macy’s, they might be willing to make a donation towards the purchase of a new Duckie habitat?

            • Smartypants July 27, 2017 / 6:38 pm

Great info! I made a bat house from a kit years ago – lots of fun.

              • 6rabbits July 27, 2017 / 7:01 pm

Do you get lots of bats? Trying to convince my HOA to let me put one up.

                • Smartypants July 27, 2017 / 8:51 pm

I made the bat house as a housewarming gift (folks moving from a town to a woodsy area), but I don’t know if bats moved in.

We used to have lots of bats here (rural western MA) but I don’t see as many now – it could be because of White Nose disease, or simply that I’m out less at night.

Perhaps you can use the fact that bats eat mosquitoes as a selling point with the HOA? Reduces risk of mosquito-borne illnesses and regular nuisance bites.

                  • 6rabbits July 27, 2017 / 11:22 pm

The problem seems to be the “rule” that you can’t have structures above the roofline. For example, we can’t have satellite dishes. Since the bat house would have to be mounted on a pole for it to be at the required height…you see the problem. I am very persuasive on the benefits of bats and can usually at least _bend_ negative attitudes, but this aspect has me stymied.

                    • Smartypants July 28, 2017 / 11:16 am

Hmm, yeah, I see the problem – the rule seems pretty black-and-white.

Maybe another local org that’s not part of HOA would welcome a bat house at their location – town park, house of worship, school, workplace? An animal-friendly business like a pet-supply store or a vet? Humane Society? Chamber of Commerce? (just some random musings…)
