Wombat Wepeat

George the wombat turns one

Last November, we met George the wombat. Found lost and abandoned, little George was taken to the Australian Reptile Park and cared for by wildlife conservationist Tim Faulkner. Now he’s a year old, and to mark the occasion, the no-longer-little George recreated  the scenes that made him a viral video star.

I wasn’t able to watch til now–before bed–so my melted-from-extreme-cute brain can peacefully go to sleep with dreams of happy frolicking wombats running about!?

Why does happy make the heart hurt sometimes?

I know what you mea, Duckie – I know how much I long to be in the place of the nice young man doing all that wombat rolfing.

Duckie – that happened to me today. There was a dog at the coffee shop I was at this morning…I was eating a muffin. She belonged to the next table (this is outside). She kept an eye on her owner while slinking under my table. Soon she was boring holes into me with “those eyes”. You know the kind. I began talking to her so that the owner could hear, saying I didn’t know if she was allowed muffins. The owner said if she has her front paws crossed that means “please pretty please I am an angel”. Of course she got a good half of the muffin and after scarfing it down she did the most amazing happy dance.
It was so endearing that yes, it hurt!!

What do you get when a cute little wombat gets bigger?
More wombat to love and cuddle, that’s what!

Wow! That is as an excellent video. Just like George, I might get older, but I don’t think I’ll grow up. 😉

My wombat story: In grade school, my teacher would periodically ask us to name an animal beginning with W and ending with T. No one could think of such an animal. So I sat down with a dictionary one day and found it! The next time she asked this riddle, I was ready with “wombat.” She said there was no such thing, that I had made it up, and she wouldn’t give me the holy card. We never knew what animal she had in mind. She never asked the question again.

Was she a nun? I remember in 2nd grade the nun asked for synonyms for dawdling and I said “doppis” (unsure of the spelling but we said it all the time at our house) and she was having none of it. No such word! I have a feeling it was a polish word since my mother’s family spoke Polish and she understood but didn’t speak except for a few words. Nuns thought they knew everything!

It was a Catholic school, but this teacher was not a nun. I suspect she looked up “wombat” later and was embarrassed that she had proclaimed her ignorance… and that’s why she never asked that question again, LOL.

There is also Woodrat. Your nun must have been a member of that family.
