Morning everyone. Sunny and lovely here in S. Ontario but I’m thinking of the Texans weathering that horrid hurricane. Hope everyone is keeping safe down there. I am off to take my mom shopping for my birthday present! Sounds funny, but that’s the truth of it. Mom no longer wants to shop on her own and isn’t good at surprise presents any more so, with my birthday a week away, it was a good oportunity for a mother-daughter shopping trip!!!!

    • beemoused August 26, 2017 / 9:31 am

Birdcage, I’m watching Weather Channel as I type and many Texans are waking up to a really tough day–thoughts and prayers with them and all their furbabies. I loved doing those mother-daughter trips with my mom. Hope you have a wonderful day and many more years with her in good health

    • Murray C August 26, 2017 / 11:58 pm

I’m a little slow – Happy Birthday, Birdcage! N.Fritz mentioned it way down the line and I checked back and realized that I had missed the reference. I hope you and your Mom found something wonderful for you! And that you had a lovely day together.

Hi everyone. I promised a happy drawing. Mike helped me to post. Let’s give it a try. This drawing is how Millie makes me feel. Happy.

  3. Gigi the cat lady August 26, 2017 / 10:03 am

I’ll be out most of the day running errands with my husband. Hope everyone as a good weekend and to people in the path oh Harvey, be safe my thoughts are with you.

  4. AB August 26, 2017 / 10:11 am

Hi, all. A long time ago, didn’t Mike post a video of a spectacular dog sanctuary in Hawaii? Does anyone recall the name of it and whether they allow visitors?

  5. Murray C August 26, 2017 / 10:21 am

Unlike the poor folks in Texas – and yes, I hope they and their animals make out OK – we’re having a gorgeous day today in the Philly area. I’m about to go outside and do some heavy duty gardening – I have a patch of grass to dig out (one of those 6′ tall plumed pampas-type grasses) and the only way to do it is with a mattock. Wish me luck – last time I did this I think it took 3 days! I had to pace myself. The pool at my Y where I teach is closed this week and the weather is supposed to stay in the high 70’s low 80’s – great time to work outdoors.

I wish everybody a lovely and productive day – and bless those poor souls suffering the wrath of Hurricane Harvey.

  6. debg August 26, 2017 / 11:02 am

I too get to enjoy some beautiful weather in northern Colorado, which makes the Texas situation seem even more horrible. Stay safe, Texans!

Still floating on air from my magazine’s release. If you’re interested in seeing the table of contents, you can view it here:
    https://www.interweave.com/store/knitting-traditions-2017-digital-edition
All the patterns are also on Ravelry; search for Knitting Traditions 2017.

I’ll spend the weekend quietly and may do some more planning for my front yard. Last weekend’s rototilling session (work done by someone else, because my mama didn’t raise no fools) has left me with a blank slate. I’ve got a plan for the landscaping, but I’ve been fooled before when I actually get into a space and start marking locations for pavers and such.

    • AJ August 26, 2017 / 11:21 am

I have a friend that’s a knitting fanatic and she’s already using one of the patterns. Wish I could knit but the arthritis makes it almost impossible so I’m looking into machine knitting.

    • Murray C August 26, 2017 / 5:44 pm

That’s wonderful, DEBG – such a good feeling when something goes off well. I look forward to having a look at it. I wish I were a decent knitter – I save things on Pinterest, mouth watering, but am loathe to even try.

I just came in from 5 hours in the garden, digging out and potting up the babies my other plants made to give to people (some “babies”, like crape myrtle and quercifolia, are 3+feet tall!). I was weeding like mad, transplanting a few things into (hopefully) better spots, deadheading, watering. I can barely move, truth to tell. And I feel I’ve hardly made a dent. Sigh. I see a nap in my immediate future.

  7. Puddleglum August 26, 2017 / 11:31 am

Hello all! I’d just like to share that I’m feeling chipper today because I got to put up some paintings of mine at a new local art gallery/bar/music venue that just opened in Billings. I’m so excited. So in that spirit I think I’ll go buy some more paint today…..

    Happy weekend!

    • debg August 26, 2017 / 11:33 am

Congrats, Puddleglum! That must feel wonderful!

    • Faye August 26, 2017 / 2:06 pm

      Pics?! Congratulations.

    • Murray C August 26, 2017 / 5:46 pm

Well done, Pubbleglum – today you’re Puddlecheerful. Great sense of achievement – I know the feeling – Faye and DEBG are on that cloud , too. Yay, Cutetropolitans!

    • Amyliz August 26, 2017 / 6:19 pm

That’s wonderful, Puddleglum, congrats! That is really something to be proud of!

    • Puddleglum August 26, 2017 / 6:28 pm

      Thanks everybody! Here’s a pic!

      • Faye August 26, 2017 / 7:20 pm

I love this. So expressive. Favorite colors of mine.

I quite like your lavender woman– I am not sure if that is what it is but I am seeing it! Congratulations!

      • Murray C August 26, 2017 / 11:55 pm

Very nice – the larger piece could’ve been designed for that wonderful wall1

  8. AJ August 26, 2017 / 11:37 am

Happy Saturday Cutetropolians – not much going on in SoCal. We had some unseasonably cool weather this week but now it’s heating back up. Feeling bad for everyone in Harvey’s path, crossing fingers that they stay safe. Remember it the authorities say evacuate, EVACUATE, you don’t want to be around when the storm hits.

Sharing some semi-sad news. My little four legged mischief maker has found a new home. Between my health problems, work schedule and hubby’s travel schedule, keeping him was getting more and more difficult so Dobby went to his new place last Friday. They sent some pictures and he looks like he’s adjusting fine. Me and hubby, enh, we’re managing. It was sad but it was everyone’s best interest.

Running errands this morning then going over to visit friends later. They just moved and need a little help getting unpacked. Later this week, going to visit mom and see how’s she doing plus finish clearing out her storage unit. Luckily, hubby’s work trip was pushed back a week so he’s coming to help out. Yeah me! More hands means things will go faster.

    • Birdcage August 26, 2017 / 4:53 pm

Sorry to hear you had to rehome Dobby – but I also applaud you for the decision and doing it the right way: by finding a loving home, staying in touch and not just dumping at a shelter. Bravo.

    • debg August 26, 2017 / 7:30 pm

AJ, I’m glad you found a great home for Dobby, even though it must hurt to say goodbye. Pets don’t understand that we’re sick–they want what they want.

  9. tara August 26, 2017 / 11:39 am

    Good Morning Everyone!
As Murray C said, it is a gorgeous day in Philadelphia. Seems like the humidity is down too, hallelujah. Especially since today I’m going to suit up to harvest some honey! The one hive is totally full, 80lbs of honey. I can barely lift the boxes. According to my teacher they need 60lbs to survive the winter. To be on the safe side I’m only going to take a little bit to share with friends and family.
Otherwise I’ll be re-syllabus-ing. We got an email on the first day of classes that our contact hours have gone from 6 to 5. Thank goodness no pay cut, but still – over 14 weeks we lose a little more than 2 classes! And one would think they could have told us this before classes started, right? sigh. oh well. At least it’s not the other way around (from 6 to 7). Silver linings.
I just love your drawing Faye. I keep scrolling back up to look at it. Thanks Mike for posting it at a larger size so we can see all of the fabulous detail!
Everyone in weather’s path – stay safe and we’ll be thinking of you.
    Happy gardening to all!
And now I’m off to check out DegG’s knitting…. I need a new project.
    xotara
PS: I also meant to comment on the Caturday image, “are they even wrestling in their sleep?” totally adorable fuzzbuckets.

    • Faye August 26, 2017 / 3:49 pm

Tara thank you. And Mike is very generous.

    • Murray C August 26, 2017 / 11:45 pm

Very cool about all that honey, Tara! congrats to your busy bees and to you for looking after them so well.

    • Smartypants August 27, 2017 / 7:54 pm

Wow, I can’t believe they made so much honey – congratulations!

Good morning, people. (FYI, I am not a morning people.)

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MRxI0om7NsI

My dad and brother are going to the Yankee game today so my mom and I are gonna have dinner.

I have family in Houston so keeping an eye on the hurricane news. My aunt (dad’s sister) isn’t too worried; she said she might get trapped at home for a bit if the roads are flooded but her neighborhood itself sits on higher ground and doesn’t flood. My cousin posted on Facebook that a sudden gust took his neighbor’s fence down around 4am but then the wind died down. He’s still at home so I guess he’s not in too much danger of flooding, either.

Are these yesterday’s kitten wrestlers grown up?

    • allein ? August 26, 2017 / 2:05 pm

Hey Mike (or anyone), do you know why sometimes youtube videos don’t embed? I no get it. *scratches head*

      • Murray C August 26, 2017 / 5:48 pm

That is such a hoot – I’m not a morning person either so I definitely relate!

      • Amyliz August 26, 2017 / 6:21 pm

        This is hilarious!

      • Faye August 26, 2017 / 7:21 pm

I saw this one. So totally me!

    • Murray C August 26, 2017 / 5:50 pm

      There’s a “45”/Obama Eclipse series, too. Hmmmmm.

      • allein ? August 26, 2017 / 7:34 pm

I saw that one. This is so much cuter.

        • Murray C August 26, 2017 / 11:50 pm

The other one wasn’t cute atall atall!

          • allein ? August 26, 2017 / 11:57 pm

            😛

  11. Faye August 26, 2017 / 3:58 pm

So I slept almost all day yesterday after errands. More than usual. Then of course, I couldn’t fall asleep at night. Up to 3:00 am. Woke up to feed Millie at 7:30 or rather she woke me. I had coffee and still slept again. Woke up again planning to do dishes and vacuum. Knocked out like someone hit me with a frying pan. Woke up a third time, managed to get dressed and start vacuuming. Broke out in a cold sweat and finally figured out I was sick!
I get that all the time. Never realize until I’m worse or I get better and then realize how bad I felt. Go figure. Took Tylenol and I have a hot Millie baby curled up sleeping on me under her day blankie. Best medicine ever.

    • Murray C August 26, 2017 / 5:51 pm

Well, rats, I hope you feel better soon. Puppies are the best medicine.

      • Faye August 26, 2017 / 7:22 pm

A bit better. Millie fixes me up every time.

  12. Duckie ? August 26, 2017 / 6:16 pm

We all seem to be doing a little better today. Makes me happy, too.

    • Faye August 26, 2017 / 7:23 pm

      ?

  13. Patty August 26, 2017 / 9:45 pm

My weekend is consisting of not making comments on my niece’s facebook posts. Her kids were taken away and sent to state foster care, because of domestic abuse and dirty UAs (abuse from him to them, and drugs in both parents’ UAs). She is having a pity party, her whole family is gone just like that, through no fault of her own. I want to be supportive, but she made bad choices, and put those kids in danger. It’s my opinion they are better off with foster parents who are not likely to beat their spouse or dangle a kid over some stairs and threaten to drop him if the abused half doesn’t get back in the house right now, then claim he was blacked out and doesn’t remember any of the abuse, and he would NEVER hurt those kids. Family members (her mother and her sisters) who were willing to keep them for 3 yrs she will likely do in prison, were not eligible, because there needs to be no felonies, and no drug charges in family fosters.

    • Duckie ? August 26, 2017 / 10:20 pm

Patty, I have never been in your situation, but I am sending you a warm sympathy hug.

    • allein ? August 26, 2017 / 10:35 pm

I can’t fathom the mindset that thinks “I was blackout drunk/drugged and can’t remember” is a reasonable defense for abusing your kids…

I hope they end up in a good place with people who will take care of them. 🙁

    • Murray C August 26, 2017 / 11:53 pm

Oh, Patty, talk about a tangled web. And such heartbreak all around – I’m so sorry for all concerned.

    • dubravkamcvmd August 27, 2017 / 8:28 am

I’m sorry, Patty, it must be draining to be involved with such a sinkhole of misery. And you are always so supportive of family that needs help. I’m sorry for those kids. You need a license to open a nail salon but any idiot can have children.

    • Faye August 27, 2017 / 11:43 am

So sorry for all the heartache Patty.

  14. N. Fritz August 26, 2017 / 11:50 pm

I’m late to the party today because we’ve been on the road. Perfect weather for end of vacation… rain, rain, rain. Spending tonite with an old family friend… Monday back to my parents’ place and back to Austria in a week.
Faye, Puddleglum and DebG, thanks for sharing your creative endeavors here. Y’all are an inspiration!
MurrayC, go easy on the gardening, it’ll be there tomorrow!
    AJ and Patty, supportive hugs
Tara, yay for the bees! Boo for the reduction of contact hours!
    Birdcage, happy birthday!

    • Murray C August 26, 2017 / 11:59 pm

I hope your time here was great – did you get any painting done?

      • N. Fritz August 27, 2017 / 8:00 am

I did, thanks for asking, Murray C! Two painting lessons where we learned some fun tricks (it’s all about illusion!) and some individual practice, including one plein air session on Artist’s Point, a basalt outcrop that sticks out into Lake Superior. Returning physically and spiritually refreshed!

        • Faye August 27, 2017 / 11:46 am

Thank you. Have a good flight.

  15. dubravkamcvmd August 27, 2017 / 8:33 am

Two or three weeks ago, someone, and I don’t remember who, mentioned the Mrs. Murphy mysteries with a cat detective and a corgi. I got one from the library – “The Big Cat Nap.” It was just the first one that appeared on the list when I searched so maybe there are better ones. This one did not have enough cat detecting and the heroine complains regularly about government regulation – I need books with a cat detective so I can get away from politics!

    • fkaWaldenPond August 27, 2017 / 12:15 pm

That was me Dubra, and I am sorry to read that! I am still on ‘A Hiss Before Dying’ and have not read any others. I too will avoid the ‘Cat Nap’ because I am reading the book for escapism as well. Thank you for the heads up and sorry for the bummer read.

      • dubravkamcvmd August 27, 2017 / 1:30 pm

No reason to say you’re sorry! I appreciate the recommendation. The concept is great, the execution, at least in “The Big Cat Nap”, not so much. No politics in “A Hiss Before Dying”?

  16. Julie August 27, 2017 / 10:14 am

I don’t usually read Weekend Thread, but when I do, I am always overwhelmed by what an AWESOME little group this is – supportive, talented, intelligent, funny. I feel like this could seed a fabulous Nancy Meyers movie.

    • Murray C August 27, 2017 / 5:18 pm

Very cool! Might have to try that!
