Fiona and Her Dad

Before the video, a quick shout-out to A. H. for her nice tip, thank you! And now, as if the struggles of baby Fiona weren’t enough drama, her father Henry started feeling down and keepers thought it best to separate him from Fiona for a while. But in this video sent by Fiona-watcher Lois M. we see that Henry is back to his old self, playing with his daughter and patiently letting her explore his huge mouth.

    She’s braver than I! That’s a scary mouth!

I was really worried when she stuck her whole head inside his mouth and those sharp teeth were so close to it. I don’t care if he did have some yummy bits of food in there. After reading that he’d had to be separated from her and Bibi because he became aggressive, I almost didn’t send this on to Tom as it really scared me but I guess for Henry it was a ‘tender’ moment with his daughter. I’d sure hate to hear that something dreadful happened to her after all the work the crew did to get her to this point. Lois M.

Yummy bits of food, is that why a young hippo does this? Because it seems like very strange behavior. But if it’s a way to get a snack without having to forage, maybe it makes sense.

I never cease to be amazed just how aquatic hippos are. I don’t think of them as an aquatic mammal, but they may like water better than otters (as an example) do. They’re manatees with legs.

I wonder from an evolutionary standpoint what makes the young of this species to think,

I need to explore those razor sharp teeth and powerful jaws up close!

It’s the whiskers. I want to touch them, too.

At 2:50, when she stuck her entire head in Henry’s mouth and he slowly almost closed it on her, I think my blood pressure went up 10 points!

Livin the Blorp Life. Seems like slow motion.

Fiona has the lion-tamer’s trick DOWN! She’s still our baby blorp–always looks so little next to mom or dad.
