What Gave Me Away?

(I don’t understand it. This usually works. I stand there and howl like I always do, then I stare at the bowl and look up at Dave, do that several times, and finally I push the bowl right up to Dave’s feet. But this time he just looked down at me and smirked. Am I losing my touch?)

Maybe I didn’t do enough howling up front, I dunno…

    Hover text response:
“If upfront howling didn’t work, maybe I should try howling from the rear!”

    Blame low blood sugar.

We do things like this, too — we have notes to put in the treat bag or on the food containers so tbe other human doesn’t fall for the canine tale of starvation and woe. We learned that lesson the hard way, with our lab and golden, when they got two suppers on several occasions . And now it’s a must with a cocker spaniel who can turn on “The Eyes,” as we call it. ????

Our house dog Bucky, a 60 pound Lab/Pitt mix tricked my housemate and I into giving him two breakfasts for maybe two months. He looked like he was starving when I woke up after she left for work. It worked until he got a huge gut!!

Now she makes sure he’s fed and I’m out of the picture.

My cats sing the songs of their people to con me into multiple dinners on the same day. Fortunately, I’m onto them.

I can vouch for this – I was conned more than once by the same pups. The way they scarfed down their second breakfasts was very convincing!

Second breakfast? Are you sure they weren’t hobbits in disguise?

        • Rachel October 20, 2017 / 10:50 pm

Nope, just retrievers with endless appetites! They were GOOD DOGS and I miss them enormously!

He looks so good with that red ribbon. Very dashing.

    • Laura October 20, 2017 / 7:41 pm

Yes, the ribbon is a far more stylish touch than our crumpled notes. ?

If the late Mr. Picky would have put up with wearing a ribbon, this would have worked, but he wouldn’t abide anything around his neck.
