We’re slowly but surely getting settled in our new home in Arizona from Florida. One of my goals was to attract hummingbirds to our senior living facility as I knew they were here having seen them at our son’s home not far away. Plus seeing them gathering nectar on flowers near our parking area. I had brought a new Perky Pet 4-station feeder with perches we had from before that we never used. We have a nice balcony but I needed a stand-alone shepard’s hook to hang the feeder from. (It has a heavy steel base instead of having to be driven into the ground which we don’t have on our 2nd floor balcony). I found an adjustable one on Amazon that extends to 75 inches. It arrived 2 days ago. I made the 1:4 sugar solution (NO red color added), filled it with 2 cups of the solution, and hung it in the evening. Saw nothing yesterday until about 4 PM when my hubby hollered HUMMER!!! Sure enough, there was one of those tiny jewels sitting on a perch drinking away!! It returned several times as we watched.

We had them every summer from May thru October when we lived in Illinois. We’d sit on the patio around 5:30 PM and watch the activity of the guardian male defend HIS feeder and watch the antics he created. We never had any for the 11 years we lived in Florida even though friends had them beachside so I was hoping we could attract them here in AZ. And it worked!! I thought maybe they wouldn’t find us up here on the 2nd floor but at least one has. So I now have plants on the balcony and on the nice wide sunny windowsills inside and hummers so it’s a good life for sure!!

Now to get some pictures when they come to feed. I’m hoping I can sit on the chair on the balcony a few feet away from the feeder and get some good shots!! Food is a great attraction now that they know it’s here. I need to find out what kind we have here. Very likely they’re Anna’s Hummingbirds.

Very cool, Flowerfanatic! When u were in Illinois, did you just get ruby-throated or did you get rufous hummingbirds too? I’ve only seen ruby throated in the midwest and a lone buff bellied once when we went birdwatching in Texas (their call sounds like an old fashioned typewriter!) No hummingbirds in Austria but we do have hummingbird moths! I look forward to seeing any pictures you can get!

    • AJ November 11, 2017 / 9:36 am

How wonderful that your setup has worked! Hope you get some pictures. We also have hummers out here in SoCal but so far haven’t got any shots of them. They move just a little too quickly, lol. Enjoy your new place, FL and AZ both get pretty hot but at least in AZ there’s no humidity.

    • JenDeyan November 11, 2017 / 9:57 am

I just love hummingbirds. So glad all your hard work paid off. Looking forward to those pics. Can you ever get enough of looking at hummers at work?

    • debg November 11, 2017 / 10:50 am

Flowerfanatic, congrats on a successful move AND a successful hummie feeder! I adore hummingbirds though I only managed to attract them one summer in Kansas. Need to try again here in Colorado!

    • birdlady26 November 11, 2017 / 2:07 pm

Glad the move to AZ went well. I’ve told myself many times that I’m never moving, too much work, but for hummingbirds year round, I’d reconsider.

I miss our hummers here in Massachusetts. They left 2 months ago and won’t be back until May. In the meantime, I’ll wait patiently (or not) and dream of hummers at your new home.

p.s. It was 22 degrees Fahrenheit here this morning, record cold for this date. It’s a balmy 38 F this afternoon, temps we don’t normally see until late December.

I’d love to be in the midst of that!

    • 6rabbits November 11, 2017 / 8:57 am

Me too! The high today is supposed to be 33! I need to cuddle with warm, furry, adorable kittehs!

    • N. Fritz November 11, 2017 / 9:03 am

Cold here too, today. Snow already in the mountains and may reach the valley again tomorrow. But the neighbor’s cat has come for a visit, so we’re going to have afternoon tea and a cuddle ๐Ÿ™‚

    • debg November 11, 2017 / 10:51 am

Seriously. How does Lynne C. ever manage to leave the house, with those cutiepies around?

  3. N. Fritz November 11, 2017 / 9:05 am

The kitties’ formation reminds me of a Celtic knot!

Today I’m going to a signing by my favorite Canadian author Julie Czerneda!

I love her science fiction series Clan Chronicles (9), Species Imperative (3), Web Shifters (3+one coming) because they are character driven and not full of battles or hard science, she is more concern about the why a character does something than the how if you know what I mean.

She also has a fantasy series that I love, Night’s Edge with 2 books so far and more coming. I don’t usually like fantasy but this is different not the usual wizard and elf stuff and I swear it will make you want a house toad of your very own LOL!!

    • Dubravkamcvmd November 11, 2017 / 9:20 am

Thanks for the recommendation. If house toads speak, I donโ€™t need persuading. My favorite fantasy has always been talking animals.

  5. AJ November 11, 2017 / 9:31 am

Ooooh, I agree with everyone else. I’d love to be in the middle of that kitten pile. Fuzzy bodies, and all that purring, I’d probably go right back to sleep.

Had an awesome night last night! Hubby pulled some strings and I was able to ride the Zamboni before last nights hockey game. So much fun!!!! Plus he got me two hockey jerseys from my favorite player – Tie Domi – and they’re signed!! And I was hoping for a win by my team but it was not to be. This is what happens when you’re a farm team for the NHL and that team has a lot of injuries. All of our “good” players have been sent up – yeah for them, they’re living their dream of playing in the NHL; boo hoo for us as we’re calling up somewhat unseasoned players from OUR farm team. But I really feel bad for the team below us, who are they going to call up … high school players??? LOL

Need a new car so doing a test drive today and we’ll see how that goes. Have another hockey game tonight so we’ll see if we get some redemption. Then just the usual – laundry, errands, etc.

Happy weekend everybody and stay warm!

    • Murray C November 11, 2017 / 12:15 pm

Ride a Zamboni – how cool is THAT! Tho’ I always thought it was an Italian dessert.?

      • AJ November 11, 2017 / 6:32 pm

I know, it does sound like it, LOL. But here’s proof that I was on a vehicle and not a sweet dessert.

        • N. Fritz November 12, 2017 / 4:05 am

Terrific pic! What a great memory for you, AJ!

  6. allein ? November 11, 2017 / 9:53 am

Happy Saturday! Except I don’t have a precious pile of kitties and that is sad. Oh, well.

Thought I’d share my new favorite commercial.

That’s too funny and so typical of a cat!!! If it was a dog and there was a charge from something like Kitty Kondo store, he’d be like “ooooh, we’re getting a new friend???? When?? When?? When?? Can we go get them now??”

On a side note, I really like the woman’s hair.

    • debg November 11, 2017 / 10:55 am

Heheheheh. Flips around the classic Steve Martin bit about his cat embezzling from him. My dad and I still laugh about that.

  7. Birdcage November 11, 2017 / 10:14 am

I am trying to get myself together to head outside into the cold to rake some leavess and clean out the last of the flower beds. We got some snow yesterday – only a dusting but Iโ€™m sure bigger snow is coming so these yard tasks MUST get done even if itโ€™s colder than heck outside. Also, itโ€™s Remembrance Day here in Canada, a day to remember the sacrifices of our service men and women. Somehow working outside in my garden seems like a nice way to remember and to celebrate the freedoms I enjoy today because of sacrifices they made for Canada in the past. Lest we forget!!!!

Errands, then fixing my bad outlet in the kitchen, then FINALLY some knitting and candy-planning! I hope to finish sweater #19 this weekend. And I’m gathering supplies for my Thanksgiving weekend truffle-making extravaganza. It’s so much fun to set up the candy kitchen!

Veterans Day here. I vastly prefer being AWAY from Emporia, Kansas, on this day. Because the congressional rep from Emporia managed to establish this national holiday, it’s a point of pride in the town. They turn it into a celebration of war, instead of an opportunity to reflect on the costs of war. I personally feel that honoring the troops means finding ways to not send them into war.

    • Benvolio November 11, 2017 / 11:23 am

You MAKE truffles?? I thought they were created by happy elves in The Magical Chocolate City!

  9. Patty November 11, 2017 / 11:22 am

There’s not many things cuter than a pile of kittens. It’s kitten snuggling weather here, chilly and drizzly.

I have no weekend plans, thinking hibernating is a good idea. We started our Thanksgiving plans via a family group facebook message. It soon devolved into giving each other strange nicknames like Turkey Bender, Hammy McHammerson, and Spam Jello, and gifs of turkeys, hams, and reactions to certain foods. Also, facebook games took over, until someone started a separate message just for the games. My kids are fun to chat with, including the SILs. I will be doing pies, as is the custom since the kids grew up and got homes of their own. There will be store bought crusts, since those will be more manageable with a broken hand.

  10. Duckie ? November 11, 2017 / 11:56 am

Hubby has a three day weekend, and we plan to do as little as possible.
Remembrance Day, too. Our local stores either pause all activities at eleven, or don’t open until five after, in honour of the day.
Yesterday’s funeral went off okay. I had an unfortunate laughing fit during the reception, but the rest of the family managed to hide me. It’s funny, sometimes, how close laughter and tears are at funerals.
This cuddle of kittens looks so comfy. I wish I could crawl in with them and fall asleep to the tiny purrs.

Been catching up on Cutetropolis posts – my mouse battery died yesterday and I plugged it in not aware that the USB cord wan’t connected to my computer. Sigh.

Very cold here – took out my elephant ears which I knew would happen, but sad nonetheless. I was walking though my yard the other day and went past my camellia tree and it was LOADED with blooms! probably upwards of 200, with lots of buds waiting in the wings. I’m afraid to look today, but it will warm up soon and give the dude a chance to have their show.

A while back I had said I would show you the art work I did for the cover of my friend’s Kids’ Rock and Roll album. She had a gathering last week to celebrate the delivery of the CD’s so now I can display the art work without stealing any thunder! (I’m going to post this so I don’t lose it then come back with the image)

    • Not That Mike The Other Mike November 11, 2017 / 4:12 pm

Here is the artwork for the CD. Sorry I couldn’t get to this sooner, but I’ve been out and about.

terrific work, MurrayC! Love the colors, the movement and the details!!

Great work Murray! My favourite is the girl tortie on the left. ๐Ÿ™‚

        I love it!

        • Murray C November 12, 2017 / 12:02 am

Thanks, guys! Each cat represents a member of the band with some characteristic specific to each one. Janet, is the one with the stripey arms and legs and spikey hair – Cat’s Pajamas is her band and she’s the lead singer – she always gets the stripes and spikes. They’re so good!

So I’ve been working through my “Watch Later” list on Youtube, and for some reason this was in there…

    I might need some pens…

    • 6rabbits November 11, 2017 / 5:28 pm

I’ve tried the Inkjoy line and they are ok, but I have many others I like better. I’m sort of a pen-aholic and it depends what I’m gonna be using them for–drawing, coloring, word art, grading papers…?

      • allein ? November 11, 2017 / 5:44 pm

You mean they don’t come with a fluffy kitty?

        Well, never mind, then.

        • 6rabbits November 11, 2017 / 6:50 pm

          Nope. ?

          • allein ? November 11, 2017 / 7:21 pm

I had a lot of fun seeing author Julie Czerneda today!
(I’m kneeling by the way, I’m short but not that short LOL!)

    • fkaWaldenPond November 11, 2017 / 8:16 pm

Gigi you look so pleased! Good to see you!

      • fkaWaldenPond November 12, 2017 / 7:07 pm

Oh and great t-shirt Gigi! Speaking of which there are two online sellers of great tshirts in the States ( Out of print and litographs) but I am up here in Canada; does anyone know of good tshirts sold online up here in Canada?

    • Murray C November 11, 2017 / 11:56 pm

      Very good smiles all round.

  14. N. Fritz November 12, 2017 / 4:09 am

I love seeing pictures of the Cutetropolis family!

  15. Heather Noelle November 12, 2017 / 12:59 pm

People here remind me that there’s good in the world.

I’m working on finishing my first novel before the end of the year, so lots of writing this weekend. 1,000 words yesterday, and hopefully double that today. And a blog post/essay. Going to brunch with mom and dad in which I need to ask for money to help pay for the class to help finish the novel. Asking for money – ick.

Other than that, curling up with Star Trek Voyager and dreams of kittehs.

    • dubravkamcvmd November 12, 2017 / 1:36 pm

A novel! That is quite an undertaking! I can’t imagine being able to sustain a complex vision for that long. I used to do legal writing – motions, briefs and later, decisions for a judge. That requires thinking through what you’re going to write but it does not require imagination.

      • Heather Noelle November 12, 2017 / 11:50 pm

1,005 words today! Honestly, I think everyone has imagination. A long, sweeping fantasy novel takes years to craft, but you just keep coming back to it with something a little different every day. And that takes discipline. But I think most people have the imagination for short stories and such.

    • fkaWaldenPond November 12, 2017 / 7:04 pm

You’re my novel writing hero Heather- keep at it!

    • Murray C November 12, 2017 / 10:38 pm

Excellent! I wish you much success with it! (Are there cute critters in it??????)

      • Heather Noelle November 12, 2017 / 11:58 pm

Thank you Murray C! I guess there is a major critter in it – it’s based on the myth of Theseus and the Minotaur, so there’s a beastie at the center of a labyrinth. But the twist is that it’s not his fault he’s that way so he becomes a sympathetic character by the end.
