As God Is My Witness, I Thought Turkeys Couldn’t Fly

Here are some turkey chicks that have something to be thankful for. They’re wild turkeys, so they won’t end up on anyone’s plate today.

But why flap your wings, you silly things? Everyone knows turkeys can’t fly!

Well, what do you know? They can fly! Not very well, according to this article in the Washington Post, but well enough to get away from predators — and paparazzi:

    Baby birdies!

We had a wild turkey on my college campus when I was in school. His name was Tom. (He had a girlfriend named Jenny but she was hit by a car the year before I started there.) He lived down by the lake at the far end of campus but he also liked to hang out in a tree in front of the library, so he definitely flew up there.

The wild turkeys in our neighborhood will first try running away from an inconsiderate neighbor that lets their dog chase them. If that doesn’t work, then they fly to a tree. One neighbor has seen them roosting in the trees, for the night. Most of us enjoy them living in the area and it’s fun to observe them interact in a group.

My friends and I quote that line at each other every Thanksgiving. The first one to come out with it wins. ?

That was amazing and hilarious. I have the same reaction to cameras, except no wings.

Happy Thanksgiving to the USA contingent. I just finished making a beautiful squash and leek bread pudding – I hope it tastes as good as it looks! Going off to our friends where we go each year – about 17 of us who have known each other for a very long time – we play music and, of course, eat – and laugh a lot. There is still much to be grateful for in spite of the turmoil in these here parts.

And Happy Day to those who aren’t celebrating a holiday today – wish you could be with us.
