Weekend Open Thread

“Ah, hello there. I’ve been requested by the proprietor of this modest enterprise to welcome you to something called ‘Caturday,’ which seems like a frightfully clever concept, and about time too, I must say. Normally I don’t dirty my paws with public appearances (or anything, really, I have staff for all that), but I am assured that you are all delightful people — the cream, as you will, of Internet society.”

And speaking of cream, who’s got my check? (Imgur)

What a beautiful CLEAN white Persian. No eye stains and each hair in its place, is no easy task especially with whites. Someone knows how to groom a white!! This is a beautiful show quality fur child who probably has many titles in its name. That color is the hardest color to keep in fantastic condition. Ask me, I know. Having raised and shown winning Persians for 25 years sort of makes me a bit of a pro in the field. That’s the only color I refused to work with. If you’re a perfectionist and want to present a Persian in spectacular condition, you find another color unless you have nothing else to do all day but groom!! Not that other colors are a breeze but they do require a bit less grooming than whites. Whites have to be pristine in their presentation. I’m happy to have hung up my grooming supplies several years ago and retired from Persians.

That’s really interesting. I’ve always seen these cats with what I didn’t know are called eye stains. Didn’t realize that could be dealt with by grooming. I personally would not want to groom near a cat’s eyes on a regular basis!

      • Ricky's Mom April 14, 2018 / 10:24 am

FlowerFanatic, that’s amazing. Grooming show animals of any kind is a lot of work!

There’s something similar called “tear-staining” in dogs; those rusty marks that sometimes seem to flow down from the eyes, but can also show up around the beard, the paws and other parts of white dogs. There are several potential causes of these, and a lot of dangerous “cures” are recommended and sold to the unwary.

Plain old cleaning eye corners with a damp, clean piece of gauze or other soft cloth can help, feeding high quality food with no dyes *may* help, and FWIW, I’ve found that providing Ricky with filtered water *only* seems to have helped, too. Now that he’s really old and cranky, he won’t let me clean him much, but since he’s really old and has a lot of health problems, we have to visit the vet pretty frequently anyway, and they would notice (if I hadn’t already noticed) if the staining indicated some other type of problem. Fortunately Ricky is not a show dog; he couldn’t care less about what he looks like, and he’d rather smell stinky than clean. ?

Oh my. How gorgeous!!!!! She must have been a foreign exchange student in the Bunny University Ph.D program ’cause that’s some major disapproval and disdain she has going on.

And I agree with flowerfanatic that keeping a white cat (or any white animal) so pristine has to be a full time job.

Not much going on here this weekend. Been sick with some nasty viral infection that’s finally starting to go away. Probably going to take it easy the next few days and just putter around the house doing some projects. Got enough of them to keep me occupied and out of trouble – framing pictures, putting plastic covers on closet rods, unpacking more boxes, etc.

Hope everyone has a good weekend and for those in the stormy areas – stay safe and stay warm.

  3. Birdcage April 14, 2018 / 11:17 am

Love the matching pillow. Beautiful kitteh!!!!

  4. Duckie ? April 14, 2018 / 11:36 am

    Welcome to the weekend.
    Gorgeous kitty.
    Utterly exhausted.
No news on BIL yet. We expect some today.
    It’s NOT raining outside.
    Mega sale at Fabricland.
    Take care, everyone.

    • Maia April 14, 2018 / 1:44 pm

Hoping good things for your BIL, Duckie.

  5. Yadre April 14, 2018 / 11:46 am

This cat deserves a much more stylish pillow. He is from Great Britain, you see. The only residence he deserves is a magnificent neo-gothic mansion with a butler and a winter garden, preferably near Oxford. A real aristocat he is.

  6. Gigi The cat lady April 14, 2018 / 12:30 pm

Not much going on here, Mother Nature seems to have forgotten it’s supposed to be Spring so we will have some snow this weekend but not as much as they first predicted.

I have a little video for you guys, this happens every morning, my husband puts on his coat and sits down to watch the end of the news and finish his orange juice before leaving for work and someone CAN’T WAIT for him to leave. LOL!

    • AJ April 14, 2018 / 12:38 pm

LOL!!! Just tell yourself that kitty is actually attracted to his lingering warmth and scent and is the only way he can cope with hubby leaving.

    • Chase April 14, 2018 / 2:51 pm

I believe your kitty thinks of your husband exclusively as Tall Seat Warmer.

    • birdlady26 April 14, 2018 / 2:57 pm

A good friend gave me a fridge magnet that says “If you want the best seat in the house, you’ll have to move the cat.”

      But who would dare???????

A little yard work today, but then it got too cold and windy. So instead of being too chilly outside, I’m chillin’ under the electric blanket inside.

    • Faye April 14, 2018 / 3:23 pm

Cat has no tact! Doesn’t even warm hubby’s lap for two seconds before demanding chair.

    • fkaWaldenPond April 14, 2018 / 10:13 pm

Your home has good energy Gigi! 🙂

  7. Patty April 14, 2018 / 1:33 pm

Pretty cat, but apparently she knows it.
Day before yesterday it was 84 degrees, today it is snowing like crazy. There are blizzard conditions in nearby towns. It’s a hibernation type weekend for me, I plan to go nowhere, and do nothing.

  8. Maia April 14, 2018 / 1:42 pm

    Pretty kitty.
My week has been very eventful.

I was offered a job on Monday! I was not expecting an offer so quickly. Yay!

Wednesday was the court hearing to finalize my divorce. It was every bit as painful as I expected it to be (I did not initiate it).

So, a roller-coaster of emotions and changes in my life. I am coping as best I can. This site and forum help tremendously…. It is my sanctuary. Thank you to all who make it such a wonderful place, and especially Mike for creating it!
Best wishes to you all for a happy week-

    • dubravkamcvmd April 14, 2018 / 2:18 pm

Congratulations on the job offer! It’s great that something good happened just before something really painful – a little inoculation.

    • Faye April 14, 2018 / 3:25 pm

      ❤️

    • Duckie ? April 14, 2018 / 5:26 pm

Maia, we are here for you, no matter how things go. Warm feathered hugs to you.

    • Murray C April 14, 2018 / 8:41 pm

Maia, so sorry for what you’re having to endure. Glad you found cutetropolis to ease your way a bit.

Gorgeous Kitty – I have to admit I’m not a fan of animals with pushed-in faces – I feel claustrophobic when I see that! But I can appreciate the beauty of such a one as this.

I went to a memorial today for a 93 year old woman I met through my teaching days at the Y. She was a hoot, always coming in with FILTHY jokes and keeping us all laughing. So wonderful to learn more about her and was a genuinely fabulous and cosmopolitan person she was.

Tomorrow I’m participating in a “Home and Garden” event locally where I and three other women will be representing our Craft guild. I’m not displaying very much but it should be a fun day.

Won’t get to see you ’til much later tomorrow night – enjoy your week end, all!

    • fkaWaldenPond April 14, 2018 / 10:18 pm

Hi Maia, keep on moving ahead, focusing on the new start and breathe through the pain. You can do it.

    • N. Fritz April 15, 2018 / 7:56 am

Been there, Maia! Take care of yourself first. As everyone mentioned, we’re here for you! Are you going to accept the job offer?

  9. allein ? April 14, 2018 / 2:37 pm

He has staff to dirty his paws? Wow, the upper crust really is different.

Happy Saturday! (I’m happy the week is over!) I slept way too late and I have a headache and it is 83 degrees outside.

    I need a Happy Meal.

And some artwork for my room

      It’s 84 now.

Tomorrow’s high is supposed to be 47.

    • Murray C April 14, 2018 / 8:42 pm

Hee, hee – he’s an especially cute pug, I must say. And I’ve seen the Hokusai ocean wave made up of bunnies, too1

  10. Not That Mike The Other Mike April 14, 2018 / 2:40 pm

Happy weekend, all! I’ve been running errands all day. Went to the farmer’s market to get some kale and cilantro for Ani, then regular shopping and a trip to the post office to mail my taxes.

Faye sent me two pictures of Millie. Here they are, and I’ll let Faye share her Millie news with you.

    • dubravkamcvmd April 14, 2018 / 2:46 pm

Millie hugging her stuffy! Do rabbits divide on the subject of cilantro the way people do? Inquiring minds want to know.

      • Ricky's Mom April 14, 2018 / 3:19 pm

That was my first thought, too!

        Millie is adorable as ever.

    • Faye April 14, 2018 / 3:29 pm

      Hi All. Thank you Mike.

Millie got to burrow into warm laundry today. So she is very content.

I ordered her dog stroller today. I will take pics once I get her in it and try it out.

My angel saves me every day. I’m glad you enjoy her pictures.

      • Murray C April 14, 2018 / 8:48 pm

Oooh, Millie is so darned adorable – and pretty in pink – so girlie.

    • fkaWaldenPond April 14, 2018 / 5:21 pm

Hi Lily! Hi All! We are in the middle of storm here in Southern Ontario. We have ice pellets now but are expected to get freezing rain starting tonight with several warnings of power outages- expected 15mm of freezing buildup. :S

I have started to prepare in case– cleaned, did laundry, filled a couple of buckets of water for the bathroom etc. I live on the 17th floor and do. not. want. to. be. stuck. in. the. elevator. if and when the power goes. So I got errands done last night and this morning.

I will prepare food tonight to eat cold tomorrow if need be and fill more pots with water before I go to bed. I am really hoping that all of this will not be necessary and when it turns to rain tomorrow afternoon my power will still be on!

      • allein ? April 14, 2018 / 5:50 pm

You guys are talking snow and ice and I’m resisting turning the AC on (I’ll just be turning it back to heat tomorrow)! I have my fans running. Just got out of the shower (yes, I’m being lazy today). Just realized I left the butter out. I guess I won’t have any trouble spreading that on my toast later!

        • fkaWaldenPond April 14, 2018 / 5:58 pm

I saw that Allein; you guys are at 70 degrees! Oh to have a teleporter…

          • allein ? April 14, 2018 / 6:02 pm

            It’s actually 76 right now…it’s cooled off a bit.

      • Gigi The cat lady April 14, 2018 / 7:28 pm

Here in Southern Québec we got the cold today and the bad weather will be starting Sunday with the worst coming on Monday, just in time for my poor husband to go to work. It’s at time like this I’m glad I’m retired!

  11. Laura April 14, 2018 / 2:52 pm

Hi, everybody. I know I’ve been MIA for a while; I was either busy with work or dealing with some new and really annoying back pain issues (that seem to be resolving, thank heaven), so I haven’t been on my computer except when necessary. And writing a post on my phone gets really annoying! So I hope everyone’s doing as well as can be expected, enjoying the weather or keeping warm and not freezing, depending on locale, and that all pets are doing well.

It took literally a couple of months, but Melody is *finally* free of all bandaging and wearing her Shed Defender onesie. After her behind healed up, we discovered that the sharp edge of the plastic Cone of Shame had created a couple of open wounds in her front leg, so we had to start the whole process all over again. I’m not sure who was more frustrated, her or us, with the constant bandaging, but at least I know I could always get a job at the vet’s office if I wanted since they have on several occasions commented on my bandaging skills, getting the tension right on the stretchy wrap holding the bandage on. She’s back to normal now, and we are all very glad indeed! At least she was able to get back to therapy visits after only a few weeks; that provided her with enough regular admiration and adoration to keep her from getting depressed, which she seriously was starting to. But she’s back to running happily at the dog park and demanding her usual spoiling, and of course Sebastian is his same cheerful little self. He is as uncomplicated a creature as she is complicated!

We’ve had a very unexciting number of weeks. I wish we could send some of our warm weather to you folks who are having cold and snow! We did get new windows on the house, and these intriguing new Kevlar fabric storm windows that allow light through, unlike the old metal hurricane shutters, so the house should be well protected now in a nasty storm. (We’re at 65 feet elevation, which for Florida is nearly on top of a mountain! But it also means no concerns about storm surge, thank heaven.) So now watch it be ten years before another one comes through here. I won’t object, even if that lovely Kevlar does sit in the garage for the whole time!

Take care, everybody, and thanks for taking good care of Mike while I was AWOL!

    • Faye April 14, 2018 / 3:32 pm

So glad you and Melody are well.

    • Murray C April 14, 2018 / 8:47 pm

So glad Melody is better – how awful for her to have gotten injured from her cone! Poor doggie. And welcome back, glad your back is getting better.

  12. allein ? April 14, 2018 / 3:01 pm

Also, last night I started this puzzle on jigsawexplorer.com

    • Murray C April 14, 2018 / 8:45 pm

      DOXIES!!!!!! SO cute.

  13. Alice Shortcake April 15, 2018 / 6:59 am

The two new books are now set up for publication and I’m having the covers designed; I’m looking forward to seeing a touring production of “The Importance of Being Earnest” at my local theatre on Thursday and the opera “Salome” at Leeds Town Hall on Sunday; and I had the fright of my life in the early hours of this morning when some shelves full of books parted company with my bedroom wall, taking a strip of wallpaper and chunk of plaster with them. Fortunately, when I decorated the bedroom I kept a short length of wallpaper so it should be easy to repair the damage!

    • dubravkamcvmd April 15, 2018 / 8:26 am

My heart would have jumped out of my mouth!

      • Alice Shortcake April 15, 2018 / 9:04 am

Honestly, my first thought was “gas explosion”, closely followed by “collapsing roof”. I was quite relieved to discover the truth. The culprit was probably a money box full of low value but amazingly heavy coins, which I’d put on the top shelf the previous evening. My dad slept through the entire drama!

    • Smartypants April 15, 2018 / 10:02 am

TWO new books? Cool! I must have missed one – I know one is the latest installment from The Era – what’s the other?

      • Alice Shortcake April 15, 2018 / 11:12 am

It’s TWO new installments of “The Era” series – “Please Throw Two Carrots At Your Mother” and “A Complete Somersault Into The Orchestra”.

        • Smartypants April 15, 2018 / 12:56 pm

Oh, excellent! Looking forward to them both.
