Maru’s Birthday Bash

Maru turned eleven last Thursday, and while the celebration started with a look back, today the birthday boy has something to look forward to: A delicious treat for him and Hana — but only after the pair wait patiently in the kitchen. What will it be? Press play and see! (via Andrew Y.)

And now we know why Maru is round.
I was hoping he would try to sit in his dinner dish, but I guess the sides weren’t high enough for it to qualify as a box.

I like how Hana just slips her head under his chin for more.

Yes. And, Maru is such a good big brother for sharing! They are too cute.

“I’m so hungry I could eat a horse!”

Hana is a hungry little cat.I was half expecting a burp to come from her!

Maru is a very delicate eater while Hana just grabs and gulps. I always thought Maru was fat until I saw him after a bath. He is all floof. They get along very well to share food.

Horseflesh!??? Egad. I know, different culture. Still have a hard time wrapping my head around it.

But they are very good with each other, no rancor at all towards Hana for diving in. I think that’s why Hana gets a small portion, to give Maru a head start. Very cute.

After I moved out of the house I kept complaining to my mother that the steaks in my new city didn’t taste as good as the ones at home. That’s when she confessed to me that what I grew up eating at home was horse meat not beef. It was a double shock because she said bought it because we didn’t have a lot of money and t was cheaper, I didn’t know about the horse meat or the lack of money!

My family didn’t have much money when I was growing up but I didn’t know it.

You do what you need to do but I thought it was illegal to sell horseflesh as meat.

Horsemeat is eaten in most of Europe. It can be very good. Italian bresaola di cavallo is better than prosciutto, even.

It is also healthier than beef.Lower in cholesterol. And it tastes better some say.

I realize much of my revulsion about eating horse meat or dog or cat for that matter is acculturation, but it’s also why I’m working at becoming more and more vegetarian. My biggest complaint about meat is the terrible ways that animals that are going to be “giving” their lives are treated.

Hard to believe he’s 11. Has the Interweb been around that long? Damn.
