Hail to the Cheep

Washington DC has a new First Family. A pair of eagles at the U.S. National Arboretum named Mr. President and First Lady are welcoming a pair of eaglets. The first has already hatched, with the second preparing to hatch today.

And thanks to eagle-eyed reader Elizabeth G., here’s the live camera where you can watch the action (be patient, may take a while to load):

I’m having trouble viewing the live camera. The screen is mostly black. I don’t think it’s anything I can correct, sorry to say.

It’s beautifully clear for me. There’s a beautiful eagle sitting on the nest — I assume it’s First Lady — and I can see every stick in the nest. Along with a lovely dead fish. Maybe it’s your ad blocker? I find that mine causes problems with some video and webcams.

I only see a very tight close-up of Mom[?] looking very stern – which is probably par for the course for eagle visages. Or maybe the fish has been around for too long.

Someone is zooming the camera in and out at intervals. I saw the close-up, too and now as I type this I can see the full nest. Mama eagle is still on top of the little ones.

I’m always astounded that I can sit on my couch and see a crystal clear sharp feed of a live creature living it’s true existence hundreds of miles away.

These birds are truly majestic. I love to see how carefully the adults tiptoe around the chicks.

I spent all of Thursday and Friday glued to this webcam at work and saw the first chickie hatch. It made all of us smile.

At first, I thought the screen was frozen, but then Momie Eagle moved. Her stillness is awesome.

Just watched mommy feed a breakfast of fish to the little ones, awesome!

      I saw that too!

Eaglet 1 (closer to Mom) was eating it all, while Eaglet 2 merely rolled about…

Mom just sat on the babies!!! Splat! I can’t imagine how they do that without squashing those little ones.

I also can’t imagine what true bird enthusiasts do with these webcams. You don’t need binoculars and you don’t need to book airfare to be thisclose.
