Morning Traffic Report

Folks, if you’re driving around the Queensland area, we’ve got reports of a koala shutting down traffic in both directions, so look for an alternate route.

Thanks to traffic reporters Thérèse B. and Ray B. (According to the BBC, the nice police officer stayed with the koala until it climbed safely up a tree.)

The phrase “cute koala” implies that there is any other kind. This is untrue.

    • Alison March 30, 2016 / 10:58 am

      What about zombie koalas? ??

      • Juno March 30, 2016 / 2:21 pm

        Still cute.

  2. Smartypants March 30, 2016 / 10:11 am

    Thank you, kind officer!

That reminds me – since there’s no “Man of CO” category any more, may I suggest something like “Person of NTMTOM-land”? That way we can include female animal-helpers too.

    • allein March 30, 2016 / 10:41 am

Person of the Day Week Hour?

    • Gigi_the cat lady March 30, 2016 / 10:47 am

I like the idea Smartypants but “Person of NTMTOM-land” is a little long, maybe we should have a contest to name the new award for people who go above and beyond the call of cuteness 😀

        NOM TOMMERS!!

        • birdcage March 30, 2016 / 10:55 am

I like that, Julie! Anyone engaged in random acts of nomtommery is eligible!

          • Julie March 30, 2016 / 3:11 pm

            I like the word “nomtommery”!!

            • Lurkingduck March 30, 2016 / 4:51 pm

Another word to add to the “naughty” list…

              • Faye March 30, 2016 / 5:09 pm

As in there is NOMTOMMERY goin on in there!!! Run!!!

        • Not That Mike The Other Mike March 30, 2016 / 10:58 am

Sounds like a brand of British candy: “Oi, pop down to the shops for a packet of Nom Tommers, willya?”

          • Julie March 30, 2016 / 11:22 am

            Like Maltesers!

            • Gigi_the cat lady March 30, 2016 / 12:07 pm

I LOVE Maltesers! That and Coffee Crisp are my favourite chocolate candies.

          • Emmberrann March 30, 2016 / 1:39 pm

They’d be bound to be delicious!

          • Smartypants March 30, 2016 / 2:23 pm

I like all of these ideas!

And yes, Coffee Crisp bars are awesome – I like them a little chilled in the fridge.

          • birdcage March 30, 2016 / 2:44 pm

“An’ don’t bring back any of those licorice Nom Tommers this time. I likes the yogurt-covered mountain berry Nom Tommers – and if they are out of those, get the chocolate-dipped sunshine citrus Nom Tommers. The big bag, not the wee one, now.”

          • Julie March 30, 2016 / 3:17 pm

Also, in total honesty, I call you “Nom Tom”. It’s just easier to say than “Not That Mike”

            • Julie March 30, 2016 / 3:24 pm

Also, to be clear, it is “Nom” as in “I’d like to nom on that puppy’s tummy.”

And I think I sort of forgot that your name is not “Tom”. Hmmm….

            • Faye March 30, 2016 / 5:11 pm

              Me too. ?

        • Faye March 30, 2016 / 2:10 pm

I thought usins were NOMTOMMERS: practicing members of the school of NOMTOMMERY. Maybe we can use the word NOMTOMERISTAS for the people who go all out for the cute.

          • LunaChickFringe March 30, 2016 / 2:41 pm

I agree. I feel like we are all NOMTOMMERS as devotees of NTMTOM.

I love this! This is the time of the year that we start getting the ducks and geese in the streets around my neighborhood looking for places to start their families.

Secretly, I put food out in front of my door in hopes that a duck couple might choose to build a nest under the front bushes. If only they knew how I would feed and care for them!!

Last year, I had not one but two bird families (in succession) living in my CHRISTMAS wreath, which meant I could not take my CHRISTMAS door decorations down until almost May. Neighbors gave me the stink eye for months! Ha ha!!

    • Patty March 30, 2016 / 11:26 am

We do not turn on the porch light, because the fixture cover was left open, and now there is a cardinal nest in there. I don’t want to bake the eggs, or set the nest on fire. It’s been there for years, and I don’t have the heart to remove the nest, especially if it means the cardinals would find another yard to live in.

      • Julie March 30, 2016 / 11:55 am

Cardinals are GORGEOUS! And my home state bird! Kudos to you for making the sacrifice!

I know next to nothing about birds, but I suspect that last year, the second bird family took over the nest from the first bird family. I think I read that birds will re-use nests. They are into recycling. Must be hipsters. ?

I had to take the wreath down because there was a LOT of excrement all over it and the front door. Baby bird poop?? I thought pizza delivery people would be a little grossed out.

        • Smartypants March 30, 2016 / 2:36 pm

Yes, at my old job we had robins who annually built on top of the previous year’s nest until it was like a birdie high-rise. It was just above an unused side door – the nice part is, there was one of those fan-shaped windows over the door so we could peek out and watch the babies grow up.

LOL at the Christmas wreath and the porch light – you guys are very kind! The birds are probably telling their grandkids about the wonderful homes they grew up in.

          • allein March 30, 2016 / 2:51 pm

Years ago, my parents couldn’t put out the patio furniture that was stacked against the back wall of the garage until late spring because a robin made her nest in the legs of the picnic table and they had to wait for the babies to move out.

            • Julie March 30, 2016 / 3:13 pm

              Love this!

        • allein March 30, 2016 / 2:48 pm

Probably can’t see them very well, but we had two visitors during the blizzard in January (in addition to several little brown birdies). Small compensation for the massive migraine the storm brought with it. The boycat enjoyed the show, too.

          • Faye March 31, 2016 / 8:54 am

            Nice!!

    • Starfish March 30, 2016 / 5:06 pm

Around this time last year when I lived in FL, I found a duck had nested under the stairs right in front of my apartment. Naturally, she got leftover bread and fruit scraps the whole time. Felt like a proud duckie uncle on the day the eggs hatched.

      • Julie March 30, 2016 / 5:20 pm

        You are so lucky!!

  4. Tinak March 30, 2016 / 11:43 am

Reminds me of the Canadian welcoming committee beaver… Welcome to Australia!

    • Raymond March 30, 2016 / 8:33 pm

This is such a proud moment–my first as a traffic reporter!
I’d like to thank Tinak, for linking the koala story back to a talking rodent.
And–as the leave-the-stage-now music starts up–thank you Julie for NOMTOMMERS; and Faye for NOMTOMERISTAS; and Birdcage for nomtommery; and NTMTOM for, well, NTMTOM’ing. You’re all brilliant.

      • Faye March 30, 2016 / 8:44 pm

Hey Raymond you just won a I BREAK FOR KOALAS bumper sticker!!

Cutest traffic jam ever!! Thank you. ?

        • allein March 30, 2016 / 8:54 pm

OK, first, where are you getting the little pictures?

And second, the picture is different in my email. Here I just see a little koala head, and in my email it’s a whole koala clinging to a tree.

          • Claire March 31, 2016 / 4:08 pm

It’s an emoji! They’re easy to use on a smartphone or tablet. Apparently some people can use them on their desktops, but I’ve not looked into how that works. Sometimes, if I’m writing a comment on a desktop, but really want to add an emoji, I’ll rewrite it using my smartphone just so I can use the emoji. There are tons of cute animal options. =D

            • allein March 31, 2016 / 4:14 pm

I will have to look into this. I’m usually on a desktop because I’m either at work or it’s just easier than typing on my tablet. (I don’t have a smartphone.) Never really explored the wide world of emoji.
