Speedy Delivery

First-time mom Cece didn’t waste any time bringing this baby giraffe into the world at the Cincinnati Zoo. While giraffes often spend six hours in labor, Cece completed the process in just 30 minutes, prompting a job offer from the local Domino’s Pizza.

The new baby got up on its legs quickly, too…

… with a few setbacks.

I would totally order from Domino’s if my pizza could be delivered by a giraffe.

I adore giraffes. I was licked by one, once and they have the softest blue tongues.

Also, my husband, who was raised in Kenya, was called “Twigga” by the native population because he was tall and had a lot of moles, so they thought he was spotty like a giraffe.

Very cool, Murray! Have you been to Kenya? That’s one place I would love to visit!

I have a friend whose wife is from Kenya. Last year they went to visit her family there, and she and the kids stayed for 3 weeks. He unfortunately couldn’t take that much time off work and could only stay for a week.

Sadly, I’ve never been. It is someplace I’d love to visit. He was there just post war, his father having been on a tank landing ship (captain? Whoever the head honcho is) and various places in brutally cold situations and suffered pneumonia several times, was told to go to a warm climate for his health. It was British Colonial times and he had an aunt who had a dairy farm, so off they went so he could run the farm. Sad part is, he was hospitalized for an illness from a tick bite and subsequently died at age 28 from blood clots from being in bed so long. My family has a few sagas, but nothing like my husband’s – they lived quite a life. My husband used to go to the horse races in Nairobi with his step father and Beryl Markham used to give him racing tips! She was pretty elderly by then.

Wow! Your husband’s life reads like a script for a movie!

I got to feed giraffes once. They were all named after Greek goddesses, which seemed appropriate. The blue tongues were a surprise.

LOVE how behbeh seems to be testing various body parts out.
    Tail? Flappy
    Ears? Flippy.
    Tongue? Thlobbery.
    Legs? Whooooooooooaaaaaaaaahhhhh!
Cuties, there are no giraffe emojis. We clearly need to edumacate some people about this.

? – and, yes, but how do we contact the powers that be to tell them. We first need to make a list – quokkas, wombats, giraffes, – so many more.

      • Duckie ? August 1, 2016 / 2:09 pm

Meerkats, capybaras, decent ducks, butterflies, owls…

        • 6rabbits August 1, 2016 / 7:12 pm

Shark, parrots, Guinea pig, squirrel, chipmunk, decent frog…

I have turned into liquid. HOW can something so adorable exist. Maybe there is a higher power. (of COURSE there is, it’s called NATURE!!!)

Perfect description of giraffe check list.

And giraffe looking bewildered, “Mythith thongueth ith blueth!”

    • 6rabbits August 1, 2016 / 7:02 pm

It’s sorta unfair they’ve got such long legs to deal with. Sorta like learning to walk while wearing high heels!?

There are some VERY weird emojis, ones I don’t know why you’d ever need–?????????–and some things are represented more than one way–??????????????◻️⬜️◽️▫️◼️⬛️◾️▪️. Seems the emoji makers could use some help!

      • Murray C. August 1, 2016 / 7:19 pm

Maybe we need to come up with ways to use those emojis to our advantage? A code of some sort….
PS – high heels ?- perfect. And backwards?????

      • Smartypants August 1, 2016 / 8:16 pm

Yes, and the six-foot drop seems like a rough introduction to the world! But it must work somehow or we wouldn’t have giraffes.

        • Murray C. August 1, 2016 / 8:20 pm

I was interested to learn that the drop was a human equivalent of a smack on the bum.

In the ’70’s when I lived in Denver, I got to see a baby giraffe. I looked it straight in the eyes. (I’m 5’2″). It was amazing and I’ll never forget it.

    • Murray C. August 1, 2016 / 2:47 pm

And they are THE most beautiful, eyes, aren’t they. Limpid pools.

  5. Madame X August 1, 2016 / 2:21 pm

Mama Cece is so tender with her bebbeh!

One of the extra pix on Zooborns is especially lovely, where 3 adult giraffes from the herd are leaning down to admire the baby.

    • Murray C. August 1, 2016 / 8:02 pm

Isn’t that a gorgeous photograph? I love that on both aesthetic and cute grounds.

We visited a wildlife sanctuary in Arizona in March of 2013 where they had a giraffe that came right up to our vehicle and we could feed it. How about holding a biscuit in your teeth and having a giraffe very gently pluck it out!! Oh, YES, I sure did. That was such a soft nibble and that blue tongue was quite beautiful. Of course, this creature got all the biscuits I’d been given. Of course, my family thought I’d lost my mind but they know how much I LOVE wildlife so it really didn’t surprise them when the guide told us we could do that. Two seconds later the giraffe and I had our little love affair!!

    • Murray C. August 1, 2016 / 7:17 pm

Where’s the emoji for green with envy!!!??? (Not quite it, is it?)

  8. amyiz August 1, 2016 / 6:21 pm

I love giraffes, such beautiful creatures! That is one spectacular baby!

  9. sugitomo August 1, 2016 / 11:21 pm

Baby giraffe looks so disappointed in that first pic.
