In the spirit of yesterday’s experiment with trained cats,ย Andrew Y. sends us this video in which Maru and Hana must figure out how to get the treats inside this closed plastic drawer. Maru is the more motivated of the two, desperate not only for the treats but to — you guessed it — squeeze into the open drawer.

Yay Maru <3 Great start to Caturday
Nice of Maru to "share" XD …or let Hana sneak in
Impressive.
Quick-drawer McAru is so generously kind. A good example to all. ๐
Okay…who else would have been tempted to close the drawer once he was in there just to see what he’d do…?
Me! That’s the exact thought I had.
I might have to, um, play with the cats a bit while my parents are away. ?
I actually put a reminder on my calendar so I would remember to play the music for cats that Mike posted a while back for them. My mom played it but they weren’t in the room so may or may not have heard it. I want to actually play it next to them and see if they react. (I shall, of course, report my findings.)
Please.
?
Smart them catses are.
Mentally scanning my parents’ house for things I might be able to put treats in and see if the cats figure it out. Like Maru and Hana, I suspect the boy will get there first. The girl is a little, well, not overly smart. But she’s cute, and snuggly when she wants to be.
I don’t think my cats would even try to open the drawer, they are just too spoiled. Actually I’m sure they wouldn’t. I ‘m certain they would just sit in front of the drawer looking at me like I did the stupidest thing in the world and wait for me to open the drawer and give them the treats.
And I’m embarresed to say, it’s probably what I would do. ?
Not to be embarrassed. You are not the only one. My late Mr. Picky was not the brightest bulb in the pack, but was smart enough to figure out how to get me to do it for him. Who trained whom? Ha!
My parents have a pantry cabinet in their kitchen; there are no latches or anything because the weight of the shelves on the doors keep them closed. When the cats were little they would try to get in there whenever we opened it, so we let them explore a bit, then closed the door on them to see how long it would take them to figure out how to get out. The boy did it in a couple minutes. The girl took quite a bit longer. And all they had to do was push it open.
They don’t fit in there anymore. Sometimes I wish they were still little. ๐
Until now, I always thought that Maru went into drawers because of a natural proclivity towards small, dark spaces or just curiosity. One of my favorite videos is one where he goes goes into a bottom drawer which closes behind him and then he comes out a top drawer.
Now, I’m wondering if he is just hunting for a food trail left by Mugumogu….
