It’s National Panda Day!

Today’s the day we celebrate these living teddy bears. They’re extremely cute, especially when they’re young…

Baby panda learning to walk

But they can be quite a handful when you’re trying to do yardwork…

And just when you think you’ve seen them all, they surprise you. Meet Qizai, the only brown panda in the world. (via Reddit)

I just prefer earth tones. It’s more me.

yard work with pandas: an exercise in futility.

it’s very similar to when I lay fabric on the ground to measure/cut and my cat is in the same room; I won’t accomplish anything.

But they get you lots of exercise!

    Brouhaha, I feel your pain.

Fantastical pandables! I too rolled over a lot when learning to walk. In fact, I still do.

I’ve never seen a brown and white panda before! I didn’t know they came in any colors other than black and white. Interesting!

And this isn’t the first video I’ve seen of one of the workers trying to cope with cleaning the yard while she’s being “helped.” The babies are such *excellent* helpers, aren’t they? 😀

LOL, that poor worker – it’s just not happening! I think they need a team – one to do the work, and one to entertain each panda. Problem solved!

They have a team! One to try and work, and the other one videos and laughs!

According to my Cutetropolis calender, it is also “Everything You Do is Right Day.”

    • DebG March 16, 2017 / 11:47 am

      Wait, isn’t that every day?

      • allein ? March 16, 2017 / 12:09 pm

        I wish.

    • Smartypants March 16, 2017 / 11:49 am

Oh, I like it! What shall I do today if it’s guaranteed to turn out right?

Strangle my coworker with her phone cord?

        • Emsthemonster March 16, 2017 / 12:30 pm

Or install a mute button on her?

          • allein ? March 16, 2017 / 12:52 pm

Whatever makes her shut up. She’s also one of those people who just can’t keep a thought to herself. Our department meetings take so much longer than they should because everything in her head has to come out of her mouth. Luckily they’re only every other week and they get cancelled half the time.

Yikes, that’s one thing I don’t miss about the working world. Feel free to tell her I said “Shaddap!” 😀

            • Duckie ? March 16, 2017 / 7:19 pm

Allein, what say you post her work address here, and we’ll all send her shut-up cards?
Then, when people worldwide are telling her to hush, she might get the idea.

              • allein ? March 16, 2017 / 7:32 pm

                Tempting…

              • Smartypants March 17, 2017 / 12:57 am

Snerk – I can just picture it!

  5. Duckie ? March 16, 2017 / 1:06 pm

Could pandas and wombats be crossed?

  6. Chase March 16, 2017 / 2:21 pm

That video was hilarious! Young pandas are like cartoon versions of themselves!

  7. Starfish March 16, 2017 / 3:28 pm

The kids just want to play in the leaves! Now doesn’t that sound familiar?

I’m pretty sure she’s a new employee and it’s part of the new employee hazing to give them the most impractical basket and the wrong tool for the job and send them into the baby panda enclosure to try to get the task done.

    • fkaWaldenPond March 16, 2017 / 7:58 pm

      Aaaahhhhh! 😀

    • Smartypants March 17, 2017 / 12:59 am

Yes – after this they’ll send her looking for striped paint!

  9. Wuyizidi March 16, 2017 / 5:05 pm

Looks like pandas also need boxhab.

  10. Flowerfanatic March 16, 2017 / 5:34 pm

Oh, it’s just FUNTIME in the baby panda house!! Just like most children!! Life is just a bunch of FUN!! And the worker is going right along with it!! And she gets PAID for having all that fun. They don’t really expect any work to get done. But it sure is a drawing card for the spectators. I’d go to spend the day watching them have all that fun. 🙂

I, too, have seen another video of a worker trying to get landscaping work done in an occupied panda habitat. It seemed like he was gentler, like he was very aware what a valuable resource every panda is and that their welfare was more important to the zoo than his was — but then as the frustration mounted, he became more desperate and forceful. This worker started out impatient. Not that it did her any good.

I like both explanations; hazing, and entertainment. They both answer my first question — isn’t there a time when the pandas AREN’T on exhibit and they could get this work done with less wear and tear on the worker’s nerves??? So, yes, could be hazing — or could be enrichment for the pandas, disguised as totally frustrating and ineffective yard work.

But if it’s what it LOOKS like, a worker actually intending and needing to get something done, they need a better system. I got frustrated just watching. Cute is one thing; relentlessly, mercilessly cute when something needs to get done is something else.
