Cthulhu Fhtagn, Kiddies!

The massive stone gate opened, and Professor Jenkins made his way down into the catacombs below. A musty, unearthly stench flooded his senses as the light from his torch revealed strange carvings on the smooth stone walls. Then from behind him, Jenkins heard an awful sound, like the honking of a thousand rubber noses all at once. He whirled about, and saw that he was face to face with… Clownthulhu.

Gawrsh, I’m glad to meet ya, now I’m gonna eat ya!

I snorted – glad I didn’t have anything in my mouth. That balloon “artist” may need some therapy! Oh, I take it back, there is something emerging from the rather confusing array – it seems to be a lobster? “Honking of a thousand rubber noses” – hilarious.

Murray— Cthulhu is a tentacled and winged monster-god from a story in 1928. It has been adopted by computer fans (I have a teenage son) in the last decade. I’ve never seen it rendered in balloons before! Ha!

Maia, so there really is a story about a Cthulhu and here I thought it was a word that NTMTOM imagined in his creative mind.

I’ve never read Lovecraft but I frequent a few places on the interwebs where there are enough fans that I get the references (ditto Doctor Who and a few other pop culture things).

I’ll have to share this post when I next find a relevant comment to attach it to. 🙂

And how on earth is it pronounced?

        • allein ? March 19, 2017 / 4:14 pm

          According to Lovecraft,
The name of the hellish entity was invented by beings whose vocal organs were not like man’s, hence it has no relation to the human speech equipment. The syllables were determined by a physiological equipment wholly unlike ours, hence could never be uttered perfectly by human throats … The actual sound — as nearly as any human organs could imitate it or human letters record it — may be taken as something like Khlûl’-hloo, with the first syllable pronounced gutturally and very thickly. The u is about like that in full; and the first syllable is not unlike klul in sound, hence the h represents the guttural thickness.

Mostly I’ve heard it as something like ca-thoo-loo.

I did look it up and discovered it was an H.P. Lovecraft creation but I didn’t see a description. But thanks for educating me – happens a lot here especially in the area of popular culture.

There was a link for pronunciation but I didn’t take advantage.

Here’s a cute Baby Cthulhu from Tee Turtle:

I believe what emerges from the rather confusing array is …

      a really cute terrier mix.

(I’ll be here all week. Don’t forget to tip your waiter.)

The look on that poor dog’s face, as in ” what have I done to deserve this, someone please help me. ” Hope a balloon doesn’t pop and scare the crap out the dog. The thought of a “honking of a thousand rubber noses” will be running through my mind now, thanks NTMTOM.

WHO could vote down such a terrifying creature!? Aren’t you afraid Clownthulhu will come after you!?

  4. Ricky's Mom March 19, 2017 / 12:09 pm

So much cuter than most clowns. Also than Cthulhu or anything else nightmared up by Lovecraft.

I volunteer to be eaten first.

Luv Bunny – our mini schnauzer when I was a kid was terrified of balloons all her life because one popped near her when she was a puppy. She would be utterly traumatized by this getup. (My kitty Stars is also afraid of balloons but I think it’s because she thinks they are plastic bags, which she had a run in with years ago and is still afraid of them, because as far as I know she has never experienced a balloon pop).

    • Luv Bunny March 19, 2017 / 2:03 pm

Allein, I agree with your schnauzer, I don’t care to be around balloons because of them loudly popping and making me jump.

    • Murray C. March 19, 2017 / 3:52 pm

And yet there are dogs whose specialty is popping as many balloons in a minute as they can – I forget how many this one little Jack russell popped – well over a hundred., I think.

PS here’s a fun song about Cthulu

  7. Faye March 19, 2017 / 2:19 pm

Ya know the squeaky rubber sound the balloons make when you twist them…

I’m surprised the dog is still in the room so said squeaking object could be applied.

I hate that noise. Worse than the Langoleirs noise.

    • fkaWaldenPond March 19, 2017 / 4:05 pm

That noise when a movie screen is pulled down– remember that from school? Uhhghhh, awful, awful, awful.

      • Faye March 19, 2017 / 6:14 pm

Oooo. Zippy scratchy high pitched plastic whooshing. Not a good sound.

  8. Laura March 19, 2017 / 3:20 pm

I looked carefully at the balloons again, and I *think* that balloon creation is a crab. The eyes and claws are above the pup, and you can see one claw is a lot bigger than the other. Anyway, I like it, and the look on that pup’s face is wonderful!

      Cthulhu has wings.

      • Murray C. March 20, 2017 / 9:12 am

Blue Foot Booby – that’s very funny – I picture BFBooby with folded wings stating this pronouncement in stentorian tones. “Cthulhu has WINGS!” Impressive.?

        • Blue Footed Booby March 20, 2017 / 2:19 pm

          I flap madly while posting.
