Mind if I Horn In?

Some lucky visitors coming to see Fiona at the Cincinnati Zoo are getting the first glimpses of another big baby: Kendi, the rhino calf born July 17 and taking his first steps into the outdoor habitat with his mother Seyia. The protective mom has been keeping Kendi indoors and close by, letting him get used to the great outdoors a little bit at a time.

Pointyhippos are such awkward-looking creatures. You can tell even from a still photo that this is an animal that galumphs.

The leeps, however, must be seen in action to be believed.

Mom is fierce. She stands between her baby and the humans glaring – Don’t even think about it!

The universal rule of the jungle/forest/whatever: Don’t screw with Mama.

Especially when mama literally weighs a ton!

Cincinnati is really hitting them out of the park these days. If anythingk is cuter than bebeh hippo it’s bebeh rhino. I just have one question: the bump where his horn will grow: is it on his forehead or his nose?

      Yes. ?

Seriously, who knows — or cares? Bebeh animals, even bebeh pointyhippos — hee hee! — are just adorable! And zoos are doing such a wonderful job of taking care of the animals, too. While being wild would be ideal, if an animal has to live in a zoo, I’m glad they have such good lives.

And did you hear that they were able to rescue 14 or 15 animals from a Syrian zoo the other day, and the lioness had a baby the very next day? A nice healthy cub, even though the animals were not in the best condition due to food shortages. But now they’re safe in an animal park in Jordan, and it was as if the lioness knew her baby would have a good life now!

That’s great, I hadn’t heard that! These days I’ll take all the good news I can get.

Oof, this hits me hard. I’ve been following events in Syria since the start of the revolution, but I had to check out because it was too depressing. I couldn’t keep watching those things happen to cities that were ancient when the king of kings was in diapers. To see animals–truly innocent victims of war–get a real chance at a good life means more to me than will fit in a comment box.

        Thanks for this.
