What a cute kitteh! I would love to know how a cat got the name “hamster”!😉

    • Hamster’s owner February 1, 2020 / 8:55 pm

Long story short: Before we got him, I wanted to name him Hamilton (for the historic figure/Broadway musical character), but when we actually got him, I decided he was more of a Lafayette (historic figure/Broadway musical character), but my husband said, “I am not running around this house yelling, ‘Lafayette!’” Hence Hamster. Close to Hamilton, but not quite. 😊 He’s a Balinese; like a Siamese, but more hypoallergenic.

Ahhh…😊He doesn’t look like a LaFayette to me, so glad it’s Hamster. He’s a very beautiful cat!

        He’s a handsome goofball. 🙂

Oooh, pretty kitty! Love the coloring, looks like a Siamese. I’m hoping the humane society I foster for will get in some Siamese kittens this year and if they do, they’re mine. I’ve always wanted to have a Siamese running around and yes, I know how talkative they can be. Doesn’t bother me, a couple of my cats must have been part Siamese as they were very vocal.

Almost forgot – THREAD HIJACK. MUST GO to UPS Dogs Facebook page because Scott Hodges has posted another howl worthy (pun intended) dispatch from his truck in Newberg. Let’s see if I can link to it … https://www.facebook.com/upsdogs/photos/a.510105182413084/2692892710800976/?type=3&theater

Crazy wet week ending in wind.
Duckie doing ok. We’re still getting used to each other again. She seems to like “500 Miles” by the Pretenders; she gets all excited when I play it.
Due to an in-bred, anal-retentive board of directors, I will NOT be returning to university this fall. At least not to this one. According to new policy, the only way they will allow me to upgrade my extended minors is to apply for an entirely new degree that has nothing to do with my previous course areas. And since it would be an entirely new subject area, they will NOT allow any of my old credits to be used; I have to start completely over. So I asked how I’m supposed to upgrade if they won’t allow any credits to be transferred over, and was told I can’t upgrade unless I take a whole new program, and if I take a whole new program, the credits that I want to upgrade won’t transfer over!
    Aarrgghh!
So, I won’t be going back.
There, got that out of my system.
Health is ok right now. Weight loss is a work in progress.
Hoping everyone has a great weekend, and that Mr. Groundhog doesn’t see his shadow tomorrow.

      Proclaimers, not Pretenders.

    • N. Fritz February 2, 2020 / 2:01 am

Duckie, if this hasn’t been mentioned yet, some schools allow you to create your own major. They should work with you to identify what requirements you’ve already satisfied, and how the rest of the classes can be used to complete an individualized degree in the shortest amount of time.

If it makes you feel any better I will be going through something similar shortly because I may have to get certified to teach (at 55, after teaching virtually my entire life).

Happy Caturday, everybody! Hamster is adorable and so very pretty. What else do you do with table linens besides bunny-kicking them?

My tax docs are uploading via sloowwwwww internet, so I thought I’d pop in to see what’s up. Cutetropolis is quiet this morning. AJ, the new UPS dogs post had me howling along with poor Bentley. That guy is genius.

We’re enjoying a weekend without contractors! Windows, doors, soffits & fascia, gutters & downspouts are all done!!!! (Except for a replacement window in a few weeks that should only take 5 minutes.) The cats, except for Sevi, are relieved not to have strangers in the house. Sevi always loves welcoming new minions into his life and wants to help.

Happy Caturday. Looks wet outside but it’s not raining now. Going to my parents tomorrow for dinner and apparently there’s some game on the teevee or something. Haven’t decided yet if I will watch the Puppy Bowl at home first or go earlier and watch it there. I don’t think Hamster’s confused about the purpose of table linens. Hamster’s purpose is just different from yours. That’s okay.

FYI, mismatched socks are still in…

    • AJ February 1, 2020 / 2:11 pm

Purty. Looks like a printer that was having hiccups in the ink dept – light, dark?? Ah, heck with it, throw in a little of both, no one will notice the difference.

    What a cute kitty!

I normally don’t post on the open threads, but has anyone else suffered from the worst cold ever lately? This thing started Tuesday and has gradually gotten worse. I’ve been to the dr so I know it’s just a lower respiratory infection/cold but it’s mean and nasty. Ongoing headache despite ibuprofen, a cough that cough medicine isn’t helping (or maybe it would be worse without it), plenty of phlegm (sorry), persistent sore throat, and a voice that sounds like Kathleen Turner with a frog in her throat. I’m doing everything you should: rest, drinking lots of fluids, etc. I guess I just have to let it take its course.

Thank goodness for the daily cute!

    • allein 🐾 February 1, 2020 / 2:14 pm

Ick. Hope you feel better soon!

    • AJ February 1, 2020 / 5:12 pm

Been there, done that about 2 weeks ago. And it was miserable. Dr finally took pity on me and put me on antibiotics since I have a tendency to go from cold to ear/sinus infection very easily. I also sounded like I had smoked 5 packs of cigarettes for 20 years and the cough was almost constant. Try honey or honey drops, a humidifier at night, mucinex to help break up the phlegm. Also see f your dr will give you a script for Tessalon Perles for the cough. That helped me a little bit. But yeah, just gotta let it run it’s course and it takes about 10 days to 2 weeks to finally go away. Good luck and feel better!

      • allein 🐾 February 1, 2020 / 6:34 pm

There’s a brand of cough drops called Honees that I like. They have menthol but it’s not super-strong, and liquid honey in the middle.

    • Duckie 🐥 February 1, 2020 / 6:37 pm

Hot bath with eucalyptus salts in it and a closed shower curtain/door. Hot lemon drink, Vic’s Vaporub everywhere and go straight to bed. Socks on feet.

  7. Duckie 🐥 February 1, 2020 / 6:12 pm

I keep wanting to call matchingks on Hamster and her towels.

  8. N. Fritz February 2, 2020 / 2:20 am

Things have been in upheaval chez Fritz. First I felt compelled to tell my boss that I need to find another job (not how I wanted to break the news, I wanted to have a plan but now I am actively teaching classes and trying to find a job for fall in Graz or Vienna). Then I celebrated a milestone birthday – this one hit me hard because so many people I know have died unexpectedly at 55 and I also feel like at this age I shouldn’t have to look for a new job. Shouldn’t my life be settled by now? Shouldn’t I be pursuing my interests instead of wrangling adolescents in ESL? And now I am following a missing persons case that I have some personal connection to from 5000 miles away. (Not even going to mention all the political nonsense this week).

So today I am calculating final grades. This week should go by fast (talking about Super Bowl commercials in all my classes, plus grading conferences and on Saturday my school’s prom). Starting Feb 14 I have a well-deserved semester break.

Thanks for listening. Y’all are kind of like family and I am grateful for any positive energy you can send into the Universe.

    • dubravkamcvmd February 2, 2020 / 8:24 am

This sounds really stressful. Without knowing how you got to Austria to begin with, it seems very enterprising of you that you got a teaching job in Austria at all. I’m betting on you being able to navigate to a new job.

In light of the political situation in the US, staying in Europe, if you can, sounds great to me. I’ve asked a lawyer to help me get citizenship in an EU member country my parents were citizens of. He says it looks good.

      • N. Fritz February 2, 2020 / 9:36 am

Thanks, Dubravka. It is stressful for exactly the reason you surmise: I am teaching on a special contract which is not easily transferrable and my residency depends on a well-paying job. I am trying to look into all my options.

I have found a bit of comfort in Stephen Fry’s podcast. Perhaps you will too? http://www.stephenfry.com/7deadlysins/

        • 6rabbits February 2, 2020 / 9:55 am

I love Stephan Fry! I wasn’t aware he had a podcast cos I don’t really like just listening to things, but I will try him.😀
I sympathize with your teaching situation; tho I am in the states and with second graders, I am the same age. Teaching has become so much more difficult in the last 10 years, but I can’t imagine doing it out of country!
          Best of luck to you!

          • N. Fritz February 2, 2020 / 10:09 am

Hey 6Rabbits! The podcast is relatively new. Listen to the first episode about the human heart. It’s like Stephen Fry knows what we’re all going through.

Yes, teaching has changed so much and I would love to be on the cutting edge of new and exciting teaching methods to motivate teens. Alas, I don’t know how that can happen without a major investment of time and effort which is hard to do when teaching 130 students in 9 different classes at 6 different levels. At this point I would love just a 9-5 job that I could leave at the office at the end of the day.

            • 6rabbits February 2, 2020 / 10:30 am

              Hear hear! That’s exactly what I think☺️
Starting last year in my state you are only paid until the kids leave—no planning time except for 35 mins while they are at specials, and of course, your lunch of 30 mins! And that 35 min plan can be taken away by administrators to do whatever they want you to do cos it’s PAID time! Sheesh. I stay 2 hours after school and take stuff home. I taught 4th grade for 20 years and in the last 6 yrs I stayed until the custodian left at 7:00! I sooooo want a 9-5 job where I don’t take stuff home!!

    Pig loop!

  10. ezreader February 2, 2020 / 1:26 pm

Pig Loop Road is in the Village of Chester in Nova Scotia. A few years ago there was quite a kerfuffle because some hoity-toity folks wanted to change the name to something more refined. Glad Council saw sense…this could have settled the issue fast!

    • murkle46 February 3, 2020 / 11:36 pm

That is a really fun name!Any history on why they named it that?
