Weekend Open Thread

We have some new visitors to the chat room today, courtesy of reader Sowmya D. and friend, longtime Cuteologists who go way back to the Old Ranch:

Photo of 6 month old new rescue Ekaterina Velikaya (top) and 2 1/2 year old resident cat Nikolai Devinovich (squashed). Contrary to appearances, they are (mostly) friends. Photo by obedient cat-servant (and longtime lurker) Doug E. Doug and I were Cute Overload fans back in the day; our previous cat Dmitri Purrshkavich (RIP) had been featured there a couple of times. So I guess these guys have big paws to fill!

Such pretty kitties! Also … EAR TUFTS!

  2. allein 🐾 June 26, 2021 / 8:16 am

I remember the name Dmitri Purrshkavich!

These two are lovely. Love Ekaterina’s perfectly pink ears! Nikolai looks a tad concerned about the structural integrity of that box flap, though.

No particular plans for the weekend. It’s supposed to be hot, kinda gray right now and 73F at 8:10am; forecast is cloudy with “scattered thunderstorms” midday and high of 86. There’s always stuff to do around the house, though. I’ve been up since 4 this morning, don’t ask me why. Will try not to take a nap, though.

Thought I’d share this nature documentary I saw the other day. Well worth the watch.

“Love nature documentaries. Not keen on the killing, but it’s fine when the predator involved is just terrible.”

    • Debg June 26, 2021 / 1:50 pm

The predator is just terrible! And adorable. And hilarious.

  3. allein 🐾 June 26, 2021 / 8:19 am

    Though…if you’re looking for a reason to go out…

    • Debg June 26, 2021 / 1:56 pm

These two have the right idea!

I will always love Kristen Bell for her adorable sloth video. Even the memory makes me howl with laughter–“He . . . he’s coming to the party?”

    Beautiful kitties!

For the first time since Covid started I had weekend plans. I was going to meet 2 friends on Sunday, I planned everything carefully where I would meet the first friend and after him I would go visit another friend. I was full of anticipation that something good will finally happen to me, something to look forward to and then this morning my car broke down, so much about the plans 🙂

    • Dulcie June 26, 2021 / 10:42 am

Awww Ems! That’s just the pits!

    • Murray C. June 26, 2021 / 10:43 am

NO-O-O-O-O!!!! Oh, Ems, I’m so sad for you! What a bummer of colossal proportions.

Beauteous keep tried -I, too, am admiring the ear tufts.

Thank you, Allein, for the documentary – have yet to see the piece about meeting a dog today but am happily anticipating it. When I’m gardening on my banks is when I tend to meet doggies and it makes me very happy.

    • Debg June 26, 2021 / 11:23 am

Sorry, Ems. Good luck with the car.

    • dubravkamcvmd June 26, 2021 / 11:32 am

Grrrrr! A temporary setback though, very likely, let’s hope.

    • Emsthemonster June 26, 2021 / 2:43 pm

Thanks for your kindness, everyone. I just laugh at the whole situation, so 2021!

  5. Tara June 26, 2021 / 9:30 am

Ear tuftsies! What a beautiful photo.

Busy day today – I’m running a workshop via zoom then I need to weed whack the back part of the garden.

    Have a great day all!

I remember Dimitri, and these 2 cuties look like worthy successors to him. Loving the names and those ear tuffs! Excuse me ma’am but … GET OFF!!!

Not sure what’s going on today but still early here. Most exciting thing going on now is I cleaned my cast iron skillet and I’m reseasoning it in the oven. Also need to rake/sweep the driveway and backyard. We’re hosting our neighborhood get together next week and the place is not quite guest ready yet. I’m so excited, first real social event that we’ve had in 1-1/2 years. So sorry Ems about your car breaking down and right when you had such great plans. I might meet up with a friend but it’s kinda a loosey goosey weekend. Whatever happens, happens.

  7. Georgiana June 26, 2021 / 10:33 am

Ekaterina’s ear tuffs are gorgeous and Nikolai doesn’t seem very worried about his situation.

This week has been a lot better than the last, Mimi is doing great, her wound is healing nicely and there is no more sign of infection.

It’s going to rain all weekend here so no plans, I’ll probably just read a book, but we went into the city Tuesday for the first time in almost a year!! I wasn’t sure how I would react to having a lot of people around me, I was OK on the bus altho I did have a small panic attack in the subway but it passed pretty rapidly.

We walked around the Old Port and Chinatown and then went to a restaurant downtown for supper before coming back home. We of course wore masks indoors but since we are both vaccinated and it is not required we didn’t wear them outside and it almost felt normal again!

Hope everyone has a good weekend!

    • allein 🐾 June 26, 2021 / 10:43 am

Masks are optional at work now; I was still wearing it on my way in last week (but not up in the office since there aren’t a lot of people around), but this week I wasn’t. Still wearing them at stores where there are more people around. Partially for me and partly for others who might have the same anxieties I do.

    • Dulcie June 26, 2021 / 1:50 pm

      Mimi…you go girl!!

  8. Dulcie June 26, 2021 / 10:47 am

I remember Dimitri – sorry that he’s crossed the rainbow bridge. But I hear it is totally amazing there.
The two new gorgeous kits definitely have the right size paws to fill any others!

  9. Debg June 26, 2021 / 11:22 am

I too remember Dmitri! RIP, sweetie. And welcome to the new babies! Sowmya, are you sure you didn’t adopt a bobcat by mistake? Love the ear tufties!

Got back from Michigan on Monday, to warm purrs from Scorpius the feral and all the upstairs kitties except Beano. She’s been more reserved lately, and usually when she stays away, it’s because something is wrong and she doesn’t want to go to the vet. I’m monitoring closely.

I had Tuesday off as part of the vacation, and then my laptop wouldn’t power up in Wednesday, so I had another day to decompress after a stressful weekend away. Time at the loom is always healing! Plus time with cats! Then I was back in the office on Thursday and Friday, with mask just because I’d been traveling. Being around people hasn’t been as scary as I thought. It’s still exhausting, but not so scary.

Hugs to you all! Enjoy your weekend!

    • Dulcie June 26, 2021 / 1:42 pm

      🤞💕 Beano.

    • Emsthemonster June 26, 2021 / 2:40 pm

I hope everything will be OK with Beano!

  10. Duckie 🐥 June 26, 2021 / 12:28 pm

As everyone else says: ear tufties!
Two grumpy ducks in Duckieville today. Heat is awful: 40 plus degrees tomorrow. Humidity even worse.
Crazy week over, but can’t wait till weekend joins it. Heat will die down on Tuesday.
My sister learned that, while one of her adult children has changed his mind about moving out, another one has decided he’s going to, instead.
I changed my mind about the lenses I was going to get for cataract replacement. Going for plain lens, and will keep glasses. I can’t justify spending all that money.
Got denied my disability pension for a second time. Government official says I qualify, as I am on life sustaining therapy, but I didn’t work long enough before I got sick, so…
Got to do some moving things around, so
    Have a good weekend, everyone

    • Dulcie June 26, 2021 / 1:46 pm

Oh Duckie. That’s too bad about the pension. My god can bureaucracy ever suck.

    • Debg June 26, 2021 / 1:55 pm

Sorry about the disability, Duckie. That really doesn’t seem fair.

    • Emsthemonster June 26, 2021 / 2:42 pm

Hugs to you, Duckie. Sorry about the pension 🙁

  11. Murray C. June 26, 2021 / 12:29 pm

Wearing masks still seems the wisest course to take after hearing about the second Delta mutation that can supposedly infect in 5-10 seconds. Not too many here yet but seems inevitable.

    • Dulcie June 26, 2021 / 1:48 pm

For sure Murray C. There’s too much celebrating the new freedoms and not enough emphasis on the caution still required.

      • Debg June 26, 2021 / 1:54 pm

I agree with you both. Going back to masks myself. Things have improved in my part of the US, but worldwide things are still dreadful. Plus lots of people refuse to get vaccinated for stupid reasons.

  12. Duckie 🐥 June 26, 2021 / 6:22 pm

Hubby took me to the air conditioned mall for a few hours, letting me soak up some cool. Remind me to NEVER get my COVID shots during a heat wave (we’re gonna hit 46C on Monday). Feeling sick and crabby as well as hot and crabby is hard. Anyway, while we were there, I spotted someone wearing a duck beak face mask. I pointed it out to hubby, who flagged down a security guard friend and told him that I wanted the other guy’s face mask. The guard flexed his fingers, said he was happy to put his newly acquired take-down training to good use, grinned, and went after the man.
I know full well that the guard would do absolutely nothing to the guy, unless he asked where to get the mask from. But the mental image of him diving for the totally oblivious guy’s legs, taking him down, removing the beak and then bearing it triumphantly back to me, leaving the poor guy holding his head and thinking WTF, is completely and irresistibly hysterical.

    • Dulcie June 26, 2021 / 8:53 pm

Duckie too funny! 🤣🤣 I love that image!

    • Debg June 26, 2021 / 9:49 pm

Great story, Duckie! I too like the mental image.
