Weekend Open Thread

Welcome to Caturday and the open thread. Today’s visiting cat is TBD — no, seriously, that’s the name, says sender-inner Tara O., “because I cannot come up with a name for this poor little guy.”

Fingers crossed I can find him a furrever home for him. He is so sweet, but maybe a little dim. I think he got lost behind the window shade the other night. He sat behind it crying loudly until I called to him. When he peeked out from under the shade, it was as if he’d never seen the room before. Such shock! It’s okay, dumb but sweet isn’t such a bad combo.

    Sweet, and beautiful !

  2. 6rabbits July 16, 2022 / 8:18 am

I agree, dumb but sweet is not a big deal in a cuddle companion!

(Ummm…who decimated the cord connector in the third pic?)

    • Tara July 16, 2022 / 12:48 pm

mmmm – maybe me? Then I shoved my bed in front of it so – out of sight out of mind!☺️

      • 6rabbits July 16, 2022 / 4:03 pm

Sorry! Having a rabbit makes me sensitive to cord issues😂

Aw, he looks sweet. Hope he finds a home soon.

So this morning started out interesting. I heard a banging and couldn’t tell if it was on my door or not (I was in the bedroom). When I looked out the peephole there was a cop talking to my (shirtless) neighbor on the landing, so I didn’t open the door. I heard the cop laugh at one point so I had no idea what to think. After a bit they went downstairs and were talking next to the guy’s car for a bit (guy was smoking, and drinking from a bottle of water), shortly after they went down the guy’s brother (or cousin? not sure) showed up and was down there with them, and last time I looked out they had him handcuffed, the cop opened the car door a couple times (looked like he put a piece of paper in it) and then they led him to the cop car (still shirtless) and the brother came up and went inside for a few minutes and now he just drove off.

Here’s hoping my day does not get more exciting.

      😳What the…?

      • allein🐾 July 16, 2022 / 10:09 am

Couldn’t have been anything too big because he’s back already. Just heard his car start and looked out; he’s standing outside but the car drove away. (Brother/cousin’s car is out there, too, so I’m guessing he’s driving it.)

That cat is so beautiful. If I lived in your city, I would pick him up in a heartbeat. (5 cats aren’t enough …. lol)

    • debg July 16, 2022 / 11:02 am

How are Maszat and the kittens? And you?

      • Emsthemonster July 16, 2022 / 1:39 pm

Thanks for asking, we are all fine. Now almost everything that went out of order is repaired/replaced in my home.

        As for the kitties:

I’m working on taming everyone. I have had some nice success with Luca the tortie, she climbs up on me if she doesn’t get the well deserved ear-scritchies, she is the only kitten to purr at me. She is also interested in coming into the house. I want all of them in by the winter, because energy prices are getting so incredibly high that I will cover myself with cats instead of heating 🙂

        • debg July 16, 2022 / 4:13 pm

It’s a smart strategy. Purr heating can work really well.

Little fat house goblins! So very very true.

    • Tara July 16, 2022 / 12:49 pm

      Yes, house goblins – perfect.

  6. AJ July 16, 2022 / 9:45 am

Such a cutie! And I agree, slightly dense but cuddly and sweet is not a bad combo in a cat. It just provides more entertaining stories that usually begin with Ya won’t believe what the cat did today. My niece has one of these and I hear all about her adventures. We also agree she may have been dropped on her head a few times as a kitten.

Wow, what a start to the morning Allein. At least the cop wasn’t at your door. Hope the day gets better and you find out what was going on. Almost sounds like a warrant arrest, at least he went quietly.

No big plans for the weekend, just a few projects around the house plus errands. Thor and Valkyrie are doing really well and everyone has settled into a routine. They sleep most nights on the bed but next to me, which works out great. They have the comfort of being near me but they’re not on top of me so I can get some sleep too. And this morning will be bath time, should be interesting.

    • allein🐾 July 16, 2022 / 10:11 am

I doubt I’ll find out what’s going on.

    • debg July 16, 2022 / 11:04 am

Such good news about the pups. I’m glad everything has worked out so well and that you have permanent babies.

  7. debg July 16, 2022 / 11:07 am

TBD is so cute! I love his white zipper and mittens. Tara, is this the kitty you found a few weeks ago?

I’m taking a quick break from packing. Moving date is tentatively set for August 6, which is only a few weekends away. I’m starting in the un-air-conditioned basement and freaking out poor Scorpius, who has never been through a move before. Why do I have so much stuff???

Hugs to you all. Please light a candle for us to get through the next few weeks.

    • Tara July 16, 2022 / 12:51 pm

Lighting a candle for you now – good luck with the move. Hope Scorpius manages well – and all the other kitties too. I wanted to say earlier – I’m surprise you are moving – you put SO much work into your house! I hope you are making a tidy sum on the sale.

      • debg July 16, 2022 / 1:18 pm

I did put a lot of work in, but then I started a lot of projects and never finished them. Plus there’s the super-expensive plumbing issue that has plagued me for at least 6 years. It will be nice to move in without all those projects.

I do expect to make a tidy profit this time! ✌

        • kar July 16, 2022 / 5:26 pm

Take the money and run before the housing bubble bursts! And Scorpius might enjoy spending time in an enclosed room with his stuff and some of your clothes for comfort/familiarity.

Felt weird but my father insisted that I leave my dirty clothes behind for my cat when I moved out for a few months before bringing her with me.

    • Emsthemonster July 16, 2022 / 1:45 pm

Wow you are often on my mind, I hope everything goes well and you will like the new place.

Will Scorpius be separated from the rest of the gang in your new home as well? Are you moving within the same city or somewhere closer to your office?

      • debg July 16, 2022 / 4:07 pm

I’m moving closer to work: 40 miles instead of 55. I *love* the new place: it’s only 2 years old so everything is still shiny and pretty new. It’s smaller than my current place, so it’s a good opportunity to downsize.

I honestly don’t know what will happen with Scorpius’s integration. He may never speak to me again, since I’ve spent the whole day messing up his basement. We’ll also be in a new place where nothing smells like any of the cats yet. At first, I’ll try day and night shifts with the cats: Scorp can have a room to himself during the day, then get let out at night to roam the condo while the rest of us stay in the main bedroom’s suite. If everybody is smelling each other all over the place, integration might become easier. Or not. You can never tell with Scorpius.

        • Dulcie July 16, 2022 / 11:17 pm

Oh DebG I hope that everyone settles in comfortably! 💕🤞

    • Ricky & Bibi's Mom July 16, 2022 / 8:09 pm

Candle has been lit all day. Just popping now in to let you know!

  8. Georgiana July 16, 2022 / 11:13 am

TBD sounds just like the kind of cat I would want to adopt, I’ve had a few dumb but sweet in the past and they make great companions.

It’s going to be a slow weekend, I’m still recuperating from my birthday outing to the zoo and water park, I’m definitely not a spring chicken anymore LOL!

I might go out later to do some shopping and try my new over 65 bus pass. You pay a one time fee of $15.00 and travel is free on weekends and between 9:00 am and 3:30 pm and after 6:30 pm on weekdays. In a funny way it will encourage me to walk more to run small errands instead of taking the car because I know that if I get tired or if my back starts hurting I can just take the bus back home and it won’t coast me anything.

I hope everyone had a good weekend.

  9. Duckie 🐥 July 16, 2022 / 12:15 pm

    Morning.
    Bad week, not over yet.
Back on full prescription of immunosuppressant. Terrifying flare up, including paralyzing arthritis.
Little Duckie losing her flight feathers. Looks like she’s missing several fingers. Other budgies in the building are doing the same, so must be a seasonal thing, but five sulking angry embarrassed budgies in one place are difficult to deal with.
Nephew almost recovered from COVID. His family still anti-vax.
    Cooler today. Might rain.
Hope everyone has a great weekend.

    • Tara July 16, 2022 / 12:53 pm

Thinking of you Duckie ❤️ – is this the nephew from the Fire Engine?

      • Duckie 🐥 July 16, 2022 / 12:57 pm

        No. Other sister’s son.

        • Tara July 16, 2022 / 1:05 pm

Sending healing thought to both of you.

        • Dulcie July 16, 2022 / 11:18 pm

          Hugs Duckie.

    • Kar July 16, 2022 / 5:29 pm

Sounds similar to having five sulking teenagers all yelling “I’m fine already!” Maybe some favorite snacks?

Have a feeling that the anti-vax folks are going “you see, I’m fine without the federal government interfering with my freedom of choice.”

    • Dubravkamcvmd July 16, 2022 / 8:01 pm

I’m so sorry about the flare up. Is this something that is not unexpected or is it more worrisome than that?

      • Duckie 🐥 July 17, 2022 / 12:01 am

Semi-expected. We were hoping it wouldn’t, but expecting it would.

    • Debg July 16, 2022 / 10:37 pm

Hugs, Duckie. I’m guiltily laughing over the sulky budgies.

  10. Tara July 16, 2022 / 12:47 pm

Happy Caturday everyone! Thanks for all the complements on TBD. Yes, he is the kitty from a few weeks back. The brief recap is: he was crying outside my house, missing half of his tail, filthy, full of fleas and (turns out) a good case of ear mites. He finally got an appointment to see my vet who fixed him all up (for a quarter of the price) – all the vaccines, ear drops, gave him the the ol’ snip-snip, and also amputated a bit of his tail so that it will heal correctly. Kitty is very tired of me squirting stuff in him, drops for the ears and antibiotics in the mouth. Still dim, I can “hide” his food dish by putting it on the other side of the room. 🤣 Getting sweeter all the time. Loves the scritches – and has started asking for them, very politely. He got his first case of the zoomies this morning – which were brief and about half the speed of my other kitties, but still – a little energy. Mostly he just loves the window sills. I have two people at work who “might – maybe – we’ll see” be interested in him. Fingers crossed.

    • debg July 16, 2022 / 1:20 pm

Oh sweetie. He doesn’t have to be brainy when he’s so sweet. You lucked out with his personality, after all the medical stuff. You’re also a saint to take such great care of him. He knew where to stop for help!

    • Duckie 🐥 July 16, 2022 / 2:05 pm

      Mr. Sweetums?

Not looking forward to Monday and Tuesday next week, when the Met Office has told us to expect the hottest temperatures ever recorded in England. People being what they are, I’m bracing myself for horror stories about what happens when toddlers are allowed to run around in bathing costumes and people insist on having a nice cooling dip in those free swimming pools known as “reservoirs”. I for one will be staying indoors with the curtains drawn!

    • debg July 16, 2022 / 1:21 pm

I’m guessing no air conditioning in your house? So sorry. Back in my NYC salad days, when I had no AC, I’d often spend the hottest part of the day soaking in a cool tub as I read good books. May not be practical in your situation, taking care of your dad.

    • 6rabbits July 16, 2022 / 4:06 pm

Curious…what is the actual predicted temp? (When I visited 3 *decades* ago, 80 degrees was considered hottest)

      • Alice Shortcake July 16, 2022 / 6:12 pm

According to BBC York, 99 on Monday, 101 on Tuesday. Temperatures in the London area are expected to reach 104 degrees.

        • 6rabbits July 16, 2022 / 6:18 pm

O my gosh! I didn’t think it got anywhere near that hot in England!
          Global warming indeed!

    • Kar July 16, 2022 / 5:32 pm

I rinsed my hair with cold water, a lot, when I lived in FL without A/C. those fans with cooling mist aren’t too expensive, or just fans to keep the (admittedly hot) air moving could help.

  12. Alice Shortcake July 16, 2022 / 3:55 pm

Air conditioning is rare even in new houses here, and mine was built in 1904. I do have a couple of electric fans…but there’s also a possibility of power cuts, along with melting road surfaces and buckled train tracks!

    • Duckie 🐥 July 16, 2022 / 6:13 pm

Edwin’s adorable. And everyone needs a duck.
I can see me hitting the housekeeping carts to steal more ducks when no one’s looking.

      • 6rabbits July 16, 2022 / 6:22 pm

Does everyone get an “Edwin” or do they all have different names?

        • allein🐾 July 16, 2022 / 7:01 pm

I did some googling and this is at a British hotel group called Apex; each property has a different duck. (Picture is missing Shirley, who is red and is from the Apex Temple Court, London).

          • Dubravkamcvmd July 16, 2022 / 8:05 pm

Great idea! Definitely a reason to stay at one of their hotels.
